    Tioxide TR28 is the latest development in Huntsman Tioxides innovative

    approach to supplying products for the masterbatch industry. Tioxide TR28

    has been specially designed to meet the most demanding requirements of the

    masterbatch producers. Developed through technical and market expertise, thoroughly evaluated

    both on laboratory and industrial scale, Tioxide TR28 offers an even higher performance than

    Tioxide TR27. It sets new performance standards in the industry. Indeed, the new technology

    The general trend in the plastics film industry is towards faster throughput and

    higher extrusion temperatures and this has been carefully considered in the development

    of Tioxide TR28.

    These tougher conditions can have implications

    for the TiO2 pigment for instance by causing

    release of volatiles from the surface of the TiO2.

    Therefore, Tioxide TR28 has been designed

    to minimise the TiO2 pigments contribution to

    phenomena such as die build-up and lacing.

    The pictures below clearly show that Tioxide TR28 gives excellent performance in film extrusion

    in terms of resistance to lacing and die build-up. This outstanding level of performance has been

    well proven in the market with Tioxide TR27.

    The most popular types of equipment used to prepare white masterbatches are internal mixers

    and twin screws. The ease of dispersion of Tioxide TR28 is so good that you can push both

    types to their working limits without reaching the performance limits of Tioxide TR28.

    With Tioxide TR28, we have produced 75%

    TiO2 masterbatches using an internal mixer in

    the absence of any lubricant, such as stearate for

    example.

    We have also been able to increase the fill factor

    from 75% (standard condition for standard

    plastics grades) to 90% (see Figure 1), without

    impairing the outstanding dispersion level of the masterbatch. In practical terms, we have

    increased the output rate by about 15% on a weight basis.

    We have also produced 75% TiO2 white masterbatches containing no

    lubricant using a co-rotating twin screw. We have increased the

    production throughput by up to 30% by weight, as illustrated by

    Figure 2, whilst maintaining an extremely good level of dispersion. This

    increase in throughput

    was accompanied by a

    reduction in power consumption.

    In both cases Tioxide TR28 will allow

    you to produce masterbatches, with

    exceptional dispersibility levels, much

    faster.

    Melt flow retention

    The incorporation of a TiO2 pigment into a

    polymer induces a reduction in the melt flow

    of the resin used. Tioxide TR28 minimises this

    reduction and contributes to the development

    of much more efficient processing conditions

    (Figure 3).

    Colour in polymers

    Tioxide TR28 has been developed to give

    polymers the highest brightness and a blue

    tone which means the best whiteness as

    illustrated in Figure 4.

    When used in combination with most

    coloured pigments, Tioxide TR28 has been

    designed to give depth of shades and

    undertones, similar to those obtained with

    Tioxide TR27 or Tioxide R-FC5, thus

    avoiding most reformulation processes (as

    illustrated in Figure 5).
