Who wouldn’t want a Rail Trail between Daylesford and Woodend?

Daylesford is one of Victoria’s best tourism destinations. Woodend, Mt. Macedon and Hanging Rock aren’t far behind, and the towns like Trentham along the 45km corridor boast plenty of undiscovered charm (and baked goods).

The range of excellent accommodation, the abundance and quality of food & wine produced in the region, Hepburn’s spas and

Macedon’s outdoor pursuits speak to the appeal that the region already has for visitor’s from around the state and further afield.

Many of us are increasingly time poor. People want to make better use of their leisure time. Many are choosing shorter breaks close to home over the weekend, and try to be physically active at the same time.

Building this trail offers the freedom to experience all that the region has to offer while leaving the car at home. Woodend is less than an hour by train from Southern Cross Station.

This area is already popular. This means local roads can be full of vehicles. Choose another way to enjoy the region from the freedom of the saddle. Link up with the Daylesford Spa Country Railway and take a trip through railway history.

This exciting new trail is a top priority for Bicycle Victoria. Helping to get more people cycling more often is our guiding principle. With all that the Daylesford – Woodend Trail has going for it, this is one of the best unbuilt trails around.

Bicycle Victoria will work towards transforming this great potential trail into a real one available to the local community and visiting riders. Join us in helping make this happen.

Recreation: Riding on high-speed country roads can be a risky proposition for some. This trail will provide an off-road, shared use path for riding, walking and other active recreation. It will be ideal for family rides.

Protection of a public asset: Building a trail on the old railway corridor will preserve a highly valued and historic public asset, and complement the Daylesford Spa Country Railway.

benefitS foR youEasy access: Get to Daylesford without your car? It’s possible by hopping off the V/Line train at Woodend with your bike – it’s less than an hour on the train from Southern Cross Station.

Simon Holmes a Court, Chairman, Hepburn Wind:

“I ride in and around Daylesford often and enjoy riding with my family both on- and off-road. Having recently ridden from Beechworth to Bright with my kids and seeing how the trail brings massive value to many businesses and communities, I am very excited at the prospect of opening a rail trail between Daylesford and Woodend.”

Russell Fisher, Trentham resident

“As a rider who has ridden many parts of Victoria, and around the world, a Rail Trail through the Central Highlands will be a sheer delight. The entire ride is a fantastic mix of nature and culture. Weaving through farming, mining and timber towns, still resplendent with old wooden or stone buildings and now with great mix of modern and historic cafes, bakeries, hotels and restaurants, the trail will be perfect for a cyclists replenishment, emotional and physical. Wonderful side trips to Hanging Rock or Hepburn Springs the spa capital of Australia, I have no doubt it will become an international icon of the rail trail circuit!”

Alison Lanigan, President, Great Dividing Trail Association

“The Great Dividing Trail Association (GDTA) welcomes the Daylesford to Woodend Rail Trail proposal. The rail trail would provide a connection to the shared-use Goldfields Track at Daylesford and would extend the region’s cycling and walking opportunities.”

“As Hepburn Shire Council’s representative to the Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism Board I recognize and encourage the enormous social economic and tourism benefits that enhanced walking and cycling infrastructure will bring.”

Brian Dunn, Community Health Nurse, Hepburn Health Service

“Fresh air, open space and a chance to get fit! What better combination for a healthy lifestyle? The Daylesford – Woodend Rail Trail provides the opportunity for everyone to be active, no matter your skill level, contributing to your physical and mental health. Whether going it alone or with friends, really going hard or stopping regularly for coffee, there are few better stress relievers than a ride or walk through the towering gum trees and the breath-taking vistas along this trail.”

Macedon Ranges Shire Council Statement of Support:

“Macedon Ranges Shire Council thoroughly supports community-led initiatives that encourage increased community participation in healthy outdoor activities. Shared trails, specifically, provide the foundation to not only promote a healthier lifestyle but also the opportunity for communities to become better linked and integrated.”

Russell Eckersley, Woodend Cycles

“In my eight years at Woodend Cycles I have been an information centre for locals and people travelling to this area for cycling. Our local mountain bike trail has 300 people a week travelling to Woodend to ride and is great for local business. I also receive a large number of inquires about recreational riding in the area but there is nothing for beginners and families. The Daylesford – Woodend Rail Trail would fill this need, and I fully support it.”

Jon Marshall, CEO, Daylesford and Macedon Ranges Regional Tourism Board

“Our region absolutely recognises the importance of the rail trail network in advancing health and nature based tourism. We support any initiative that advances the Daylesford – Woodend Rail Trail and further develops and enhances this valued tourism experience.”Courtesy David Bryant
