Imagination, inspiration, creation: it ’s what drives tinkerers, inventors and do-it-yourselfers the world over. And in January, a National Productions presents Make: – the DIY series for a new generation – through public television stations nationwide and on the web at www.makezine.tv.

Based on the popular Make magazine, the show taps into what is called the “Maker Movement,” a new DIY techno-trend sweeping the country. The New York Times has dubbed the Maker Movement, “An insurgency of the inventive, the curious and the technologically restless.” The transition to T V brings the magazine’s creations to life.

Make: showcases inventors and provides how-to instruction; it encourages people to take apart machines and computers and reconfigure them for new uses and shows them how to replace expensive technology with af fordable

homemade creations.

What kind of creations? Well, there’s the digital T V antenna made out of coat hangers, a kite-mounted camera that takes stunning aerial photographs, and the VCR-powered cat feeder that feeds kit ty while you’re at work.

“It ’s all about innovation,” says Richard Hudson, Director of Science Production at a and Executive Producer of Make: “It ’s about get ting people excited, and having them use their own imagination to explore, create, and – well – make.”

Each episode begins with a profile; these are the inventors, ar tists, geeks and just plain everyday folks who mix new and old technology to create new-fangled marvels. Then,

workshop host John Park shows step-by-step how to make that week ’s creation – from the outrageous to the practical. The shows wrap up with tips and inspiration from real-life "Makers".

Major funding for Make: is provided by Geek Squad. Robert Stephens, Geek Squad Founder and Chief Inspector says, "From my perspective, it's no accident that the moon landing and Star Wars were followed by the first Apple Macintosh. When you make science and technology interesting, you spark innovation."

“The passion in the Maker movement is completely contagious,” says Hudson. “Everybody’s got a bit of the Maker spirit of curiosity and discovery. If you have an imagination, wonder about technology, or if you just like cool stuf f – you’ll love Make:”

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGEThis February, television will see the biggest change in its history with the transition to digital TV. And a is launching a new family of services to make full use of all that digital technology has to offer.

First is the new line-up of digital channels that will be in place – beginning at midnight on the morning of February 18, 2009. Thanks to new technology, all of our channels will be designated as “Channel 2-x”. The channels are: • 2-1 a 2 in High Definition, featuring 11 ½ hours of daily educational programming for children and the best in PBS prime-time programs.

• 2-2 a MN, The Minnesota Channel, featuring the best in local and regional public television, plus live coverage of the Minnesota Legislature.

• 2-3 a life, a new channel featuring a mix of lifestyle and how-to programming, encore presentations of PBS programs, and favorites like Charlie Rose and the BBC World News.

• 2-4 a WX, full-time MNDOT weather radar.

It is not just our TV channels that will change. We are also making a commitment to the world of on-line and on-demand media. Among those services will be:

• The Minnesota Video Vault, an online on-demand service launching later this year, that will contain hundreds of programs from the a archives: classic interviews and performances from Nighttimes Variety, Newsnight Minnesota and Almanac as well as a broad cross-section of a documentaries. Also included will be current a productions, as well as programs from other regional public television stations.

• Working with PBS, a will soon expand on-demand offerings – both online and via cable – to include favorite PBS series. This is in addition to the existing on-demand services available through PBS KIDS Sprout (via cable) and PBS KIDS GO! (online).

We will be serving more people, more often, and reaching them with more services than ever before. And we are working toward serving them on their own terms – making access available anytime, anywhere, to anyone. In all, the future is incredibly exciting. We look forward sharing it with you!

Hey You Guyyyyys! The Electric Company’s back and is sure to spark your child's imagination! Starting with four back-to-back episodes a brings back this classic favorite, re-imagined for the 21st century. The Electric Company aims to improve literacy (much like the original series, which debuted in 1971) and is brought to life with music videos, sketch comedy, animation and short films. 2 Monday, January 19, 3:30-5:30pm; fridays, 4pm, Starting January 23

Marvelous Meringues materials* 2 eggs* 1/2 cup sugar* 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract* 1/3 cup mini chocolate chips* mixing bowl* electric mixer* measuring cups and spoons* wooden spoon* 2 table spoons* greased baking sheet* oven preheated to 250°

directionsBeating egg whites causes an amaz-ing change. When you add sugar and bake, more changes happen...and you get a delicious cookie!

Try this simple recipe with your child. As you cook, talk about the impor-tance of following the directions. Make predictions, observations, and discoveries together. Ask: What do you think is going to happen? What changes do you notice? Why do you think that happened?

1. Separate: Carefully separate the yolks from each egg, allowing just the whites to fall into your mixing bowl. (If you don't have an egg separator, just pass the yolk back and forth between the two halves of the broken shell until all the white has fallen into the bowl.)

2. Beat: Beat the egg whites until stiff. Next, slowly beat in the sugar and vanilla. Finally, gently fold in the chocolate chips.

3. Cook: Drop small spoonfuls of the mixture onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake in your preheated oven at 250° for 45-50 minutes (or until crisp).

NOVA The Big Energy Gamble

T he latest public opinion polls show that a vast majority of Americans believe the world is facing a global climate crisis. We are willing to pay more for "cleaner energy" and we want

our government to take appropriate action to mitigate the crisis, but we don't have a clue what those actions should be. This 36th season premier of NOVA shines the spotlight on California – an oasis of conservation in an energy hungry country. The program looks at everything Cali-fornia is doing, from energy conservation and efficiency to the development of new sources of carbon-free power, to find out how the rest of the country can join in the aggressive pursuit of a sustainable energy future. 2 Tuesday, January 20, 7pm; Monday, January 26, 11pm

almanac: at the CapitolYour insider's perspective on politics

Each year during the legislative session, Almanac: At the Capitol distills the complex workings of the Legislature into an easily understandable

format for viewers. The show has won numerous awards for its reporting, including recent regional Emmy wins for the show as well as for commen-tator David Gillette. The show’s host and political reporter, Mary Lahammer was also just named "Best TV Reporter" by Minnesota Monthly. As it heads into its 8th season, Mary gives us an inside look at the show, the talented people behind it, and what’s coming up for the Legislature this year. “I always try to boil it down to the ‘Why should I care?’ or ‘So what?’ factor – how will it affect you,” Mary says of the show. “We cover the substance of politics and have some fun along the way.” Photojournalist Butch Bowring, producer Kari Kennedy and political cartoonist David Gillette round out the Almanac: At the Capitol team. They

cover an avalanche of complex legisla-tion in both houses; create daily updates on the Legislature and every Wednesday produce the 30-minute live broadcast of Almanac: At the Capitol. Mary was also

one of the first reporters in the Twin Cities with a blog when it started 6 years ago. She says, “We often take you behind-the-scenes. There's some analysis that bites both ways. It has been a vehicle to break many stories first. The increase in traffic in recent years has been astounding.” As far as what Minnesotans can expect this year during the Legislative session, Mary notes, “As always, much discussion will revolve around edu-cation, healthcare and property taxes.” But she stresses that the economy will be huge, “Another budget shortfall is on tap for lawmakers. Just like nationally, what to do with a failing economy will be a central issue.”

When TV goes digital on February 17, 2009, a will also be changing its channel line-up. We are taking this opportunity to optimize and improve our services. This month we chat with Tom Holter, Executive Director of Programming, to give you an idea of what to expect next month:

why the changes to the a channel line-up? is this due to digital television? The DTV transition has given us a great opportunity to take a good look at our programming and update a few things. The transition to DTV allows us to broadcast multiple program streams on each of our transmitters. As a result, we have the opportunity to offer a range of program services across a family of a channels. This means we keep all the programming you love, but we can coordinate between channels and serve you better.

what can viewers expect from this new family of services? a 2 will mostly remain the same, except that all shows will now be in high-definition. The other channels will serve a range of diverse interests; a life will concentrate on cooking, travel, crafts, and do-it-yourself projects, and a MN will be devoted to the needs and interests of Minnesotans and their communities. There will also be an increase to the number of hours devoted to children’s programming, there will be 11 and 1/2 hours on a 2 and 8-10 hours on the weekend on a life.

what’s happening to a 17 ?Thanks to new technical capabilities made possible by digital TV, all of the channels will be designated as “Channel 2-x,” so there will no longer be a “Channel 17.” All of the great PBS programming that aired on a 17 will now air on a liFe; the weather will have its own station, a WX; and the Legislature will now air on a MN. Can you tell us more about a life?a life is a brand-new channel that we are very excited to offer, it will feature all the best in how-to, do-it-yourself, and lifestyle programming. Expect great shows like America’s Test Kitchen, This Old House and Rudy Maxa’s World in primetime (7-11pm), and repeats of your favorite PBS and a 2 shows during the day.
