Tauranga Primary School Newsletter 30 March 2012 Newsletter TERM 1 / WEEK 9 F r o m t h e P r i n c i p a l ‘s P e n Dear Parents / Caregivers, We always knew that Term One was going to be hectic with all the building projects that have been occurring on site and this has proved to be the case. Thank you for your understanding and patience with our lack of space and temporary muddle. The administration project is on schedule and we are hoping to be able to move into the new offices early in Term Two. We are also planning an open day when our families will be invited to view our lovely new offices. Now that the term is nearly over the sun has decided to shine – our year fours had wonderful weather for their overnight camp at Poututerang Marae and it was great again yesterday for the year three’s visit What a fabulous experience for them all. The term has been a very busy one and the busyness continues next week with class visits to the Art Gallery for the middle team. Early next term our young leaders will be attending the Young Leaders Conference in Rotorua and to support them in attending there will be a mufti day on the last day of term – Thursday 5 th April. Our young leaders assist the school in many ways, running events for all students and raising funds for school projects through the year. Everyone is invited to come in mufti for a gold coin donation. Those of you who pick up children after school in Sixth Ave will have noticed a change in the parking areas there. People were not using the 5 minute pickup drop off zones correctly and these have now been moved to the other side of the gateway. Parking from the school gate onwards is now 120 minutes. Please remember, when you use the pick up drop off zone, you must remain in your car. The teacher on duty will ensure your child comes to your car quickly and safely. If you collect your child/ren in either Arundel St or Fifth Ave please take extreme care! There are many cars parked all day in both of these streets meaning it is awkward to manoeuvre around them at 3.00pm. You may have collected your children safely but there are still other children moving around cars – please check thoroughly before pulling out. Please do not park in or across the bus bay, we have two buses using this between 3 and 3:15pm. You can help further by not attempting u-turns in Fifth and Sixth Ave once you have picked up your children, please go around the block. We would remind you that there is ample parking in Fifth Ave across Cameron Rd and children are supervised crossing Cameron Rd before and after school making this a very safe option for parents. With only one week of the term left we know people are looking forward to the holidays, we hope the weather stays fine for the Easter break and that you all have some well deserved rest and recreation. Remember that Term Two starts on Monday 23rd April. ✤ Walking School BusDid you know that TPS has a walking school bus? It operates everyday from school. After school children meet with parent “bus drivers” outside Room 15. They then walk down to Memorial Park (by the Rowing Club) where there is plenty of parking. The bus usually arrives by 3.20pm. There are lots of rewards and incentives for childrento take part and if we can reduce the congestion outside the school gate, it will be so much safer for our children.

DATES TO REMEMBER

In 2001, the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED), through the Definition and Selection of Competencies (DeSeCo) Project, identified a set of competencies that people need in order to be competent and effective citizens.

Key Competencies are the capabilities people need to live, learn, work and contribute as active members of their communities. They are critical to sustained learning and effective participation in society and work.

The five Key Competencies in the NZ Curriculum are: Thinking ( at TPS we call this, Thinker), Participating and Contributing (Contributor), Relating to Others (Team Player), Managing Self (Self Manager) and Using Language, Symbols and Texts (Communicator)

We are aware that the Key Competencies of our TPS learners will be critical as they grow into adults of the 21st Century. Therefore we are planning to increase our focus on the developing the vocabulary, dispositions and actions of each of these competencies across our TPS curriculum. In Term 2 will be focusing on the THINKER competency, this will be evident in the learning experiences and vocabulary of our learners and shared via our website and a THINKER wall (in the Mosaic area once the building project is finished). Throughout Term 2 newsletters we will elaborate what this means and what it will LOOK, SOUND and FEEL like at TPS. Further information about Key Competencies can be viewed at: www.keycompetencies.tki.org.nz/Why-do-KCs-matter

Big thanks to all that have returned their Term 2/3 sports notices.

We are just putting the finishing touches on our Netball, Basketball and Hockey teams and all information will be out next week. We have room still for some Yr 3/4 and Yr 5 Hockey players. If you would like to join one of these teams, Hockey is a great team sport, and loads of fun. We also need 2 x Yr 6 Netballers. Please let the office know asap if you would like to play. [email protected]

As you know next week will be my last week. I would like to thank all the parents that have helped coaching and/or managing teams, on the sidelines, and also providing transport for the past 5 years that I have been here.

I have enjoyed my time here helping and involving the children in so many fabulous sports teams.

You may still see me around through my involvement in ‘School Sports’ (www.schoolsports.co.nz)

All the best everyone for future sports - lets hope TPS produces many wonderful ‘little champions’

JASONʼS SPORTS TALK...

On Wednesday the 21st of March we held our annual Duathlon. The weather overhead, as well as the impending forecast, did not bode well. However a brave contingent of parents and supporters cheered as the children raced around the course.

Year group races were keenly contested. The initial run was followed by a "splash and dash" through the school pool. A short sprint to the finish line, where family and friends, greeted the weary swimmers. It was fantastic to see so many children participate. It goes to show that at TPS we can proudly boast about our "Have a go" attitude.

A special congratulations goes to the following children who were placed in the top three of their event:Yr 1 Girls 1st Phoebe Hawes; Yr 1 Boys 1st Oskah Ryan 2nd Tiani Rae-Potene 2nd Boston Dixon 3rd Caitlin Gilmour 3rd Kian Valois

Yr 2 Girls 1st Charlotte Wilde Yr 2 Boys 1st Max Barnett 2nd Lily Purcell 2nd Ned DeSilva 3rd Carmen-Rose Kernahan 3rd Jakob Leen & Lily Aitken-Keogh

Yr 3 Girls 1st Skye Kinsella Yr 3 Boys 1st Xavi Taele 2nd Kiana Rae-Potene 2nd Thomas Hawes 3rd Rosie Kneale 3rd Reuben Parekowhai-Gudex

Yr 4 Girls 1st Mia Watkins Yr 4 Boys 1st Corban Crowther 2nd Brooke Poutawera 2nd Dean Power 3rd Kenza Taele 3rd Campbell Syme

Board Changes!!

Due to some members of our current board no longer having children at the school and a past board member moving to Australia, it is timely to introduce “new blood” to the board prior to the tri-annual elections next year. This means that there are three vacancies to be filled

In order to fill the vacancies the board has decided to call a bi-election. This ensures that everyone who may be interested to become a board member has the opportunity to be considered and also gives the new members an opportunity to be part of the existing BoT before the scheduled election in 2013.

We will be calling for nominations early next term, so please take this time to give this some serious consideration. It is a great way to become involved in the school and it’s governance.

If anyone would like to know any further information, please contact the school office; < [email protected] >, Jenny McNicol or myself; < [email protected] >
