Dear Friends,
Thinking back over the past year allows my mind to wander back 20 years to the time when I was very much a “wet behind the ears” young Headmaster. Phil Smith had led the school through turbulent times to a point of stability. As in all things, there was work still to be done. And there still is work to be done 20 years later in spite of all that we have accomplished. Of what am I most proud?
The easy answer would be to list buildings built or dollars raised, but these are only physical tributes to our successes. The real answer lies in the growth of individual students, individual members of the faculty and in the bigger picture, the community at large. A young freshman enters East dormitory unsure of the
path in front of him. Four years later, he graduates as a confi dent young man who has not only learned a great deal from his talented teachers, but has also learned a great deal about himself. We speak endlessly in Chapel about CHARACTER and its attributes. As in my reference to buildings above, it would be easy to brag about the 20 members of the senior class who were honored last year as AP Scholars by the College Board for their high scores on the Advanced Placement exams. Likewise, a college list with prestigious names refl ects good teaching and learning. But what is truly important is the growth that each young man undergoes. Games won, tests mastered, books read are all part of the growth process. I take pride in the difference that Trinity-Pawling makes in a young person’s life. It is very gratifying to hear 20 years later, “Trinity-Pawling changed my life forever.”
I am equally proud of the faculty and staff who reached deep within themselves to enable the school to weather the current fi nancial crisis without missing a beat. “Doing more with less” is the mantra of many organizations these days. As the accompanying information demonstrates, Trinity-Pawling did have yet another year where income exceeded expense. Our income is 77% tuition driven with the remaining amounts coming from the generosity of others and from endowment income. All three sources felt the downturn in the economy. Yet, we reached our goals with enrollment, fund raising, and management. While I receive accolades for what happens on campus, I know that this would not be possible without the generosity of our donors and the hard work by our faculty and staff. That is where the credit truly belongs.
Every Headmaster knows that we are merely occupants of the offi ce for a period of time. The School belongs to those who have come to love it through their years as students and alumni. To make Trinity-Pawling stronger each year is my goal and I will not rest on the laurels. Thank you for your support and generosity.
Sincerely,
Archibald A. Smith III
Letter from the Headmaster
