When Rathbone Wine Group (RWG) moved to its new Port Melbourne Distribution Centre and headquarters five years ago, the organisation looked to TMHA to help find the most efficient packing and picking methods. The inner city location of their new premises meant that space was at a premium; the smaller-than-ideal floor space required RWG to look at ways to maximise warehouse capacity. In conjunction with its logistics arm, 14 Degrees Logistics, RWG’s plans called for an extra-high 14-metre roof, subsequently allowing pallets to be stacked higher than usual. He says any company working in logistics is going to be required to get the most out of the increasingly limited floor space available – especially in city environments. “This premises came about as a result of us wanting to consolidate our bottling and warehousing activities for our four wineries,” said Mr Viani of specially designed warehouse, which is kept at a constant 14 degrees – the ideal temperature for storing wine. “Obviously, the closer you get to the city the less space is available – with this site, we had to try to maximise what was available to us, and that meant going up. “The problem is that good, safe picking equipment doesn’t really reach as high as we needed. “All of our forklifts were, and remain, TMHA forklifts – so we contacted TMHA and they came in to consult in the initial phase of the site development. “As a result of that consultation, TMHA was able to supply us with a BT Vector-A Series Turret Truck – which, at the time, was the only one in the country capable of reaching these heights. “This Turret Truck reaches higher than any similar product we had available to us, and allowed us to add an extra seventh level of pallets – which gives us an extra 1,000 pallets of storage. “That’s an extra $3,000 to $4,000 of storage per week – or around $200,000 per year.” The BT Vector-A Series Turret Truck moves around the 14,500-pallet capacity building via a narrow, magnetic groove – the machine’s inability to deviate from its track represents a key safety feature. “Sticking to that very small groove means that the machine doesn’t bang into the racks as it moves around the facility. “When you’re working at the sort of heights this machine can, and with fragile goods like wine bottles, it is an important safety aspect.” Mr Viani says the versatility of the Toyota Material Handling products is just one of the appealing things about them. “The most important thing for us is that all of our TMH equipment is very rarely out of service. “Combined with the regular monthly servicing and the strong aftersales support, reliability is just not an issue for us.” Toyota Material Handling Provides Unique Solutions T orque Toyota Material Handling AUTUMN 2013 For the 26th consecutive year, Toyota’s range of engine powered counter-balance forklifts have been Australia’s number one seller.* Built tough with famous Toyota reliability, quality and durability, Toyota’s range of engine powered counter-balance forklifts have proven their worth with advanced features that set the benchmark for safety, productivity and low running costs. www.toyotamaterialhandling.com.au Freecall 1800 425 438 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 Either our forklifts are extremely good or orange is a very popular colour.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has engineered some unique solutions for the specifi c challenges facing a company that is home to some iconic Australian wines.

When Rathbone Wine Group (RWG) moved to its new Port Melbourne Distribution Centre and headquarters fi ve years ago, the organisation looked to TMHA to help fi nd the most effi cient packing and picking methods.

The inner city location of their new premises meant that space was at a premium; the smaller-than-ideal fl oor space required RWG to look at ways to maximise warehouse capacity.

In conjunction with its logistics arm, 14 Degrees Logistics, RWG’s plans called for an extra-high 14-metre roof, subsequently allowing pallets to be stacked higher than usual.

The diffi culty in this inner-city solution was being able to reach the heights that would allow for the maximum storage capacity in the 4500 square metre facility.

As long-time and loyal customers, from head offi ce right through its renowned wineries, Yering Station, Mount Langi Ghiran, Parker Coonawarra Estate and Xanadu Margaret River, RWG turned to TMHA.

Paul Viani, logistics manager for Rathbone Wine Group and 14 Degrees, has spent 20 years in logistics.

He says any company working in logistics is going to be required to get the most out of the increasingly limited fl oor space available – especially in city environments.

“This premises came about as a result of us wanting to consolidate our bottling and warehousing activities for our four wineries,” said Mr Viani of specially designed warehouse, which is kept at a constant 14 degrees – the ideal temperature for storing wine.

“Obviously, the closer you get to the city the less space is

available – with this site, we had to try to maximise what was available to us, and that meant going up.

“That’s an extra $3,000 to $4,000 of storage per week – or around $200,000 per year.”

The BT Vector-A Series Turret Truck moves around the 14,500-pallet capacity building via a narrow, magnetic groove – the machine’s inability to deviate from its track represents a key safety feature.

“Sticking to that very small groove means that the machine doesn’t bang into the racks as it moves around the facility.

“When you’re working at the sort of heights this machine can, and with fragile goods like wine bottles, it is an important safety aspect.”

Mr Viani says the versatility of the Toyota Material Handling products is just one of the appealing things about them.

“The most important thing for us is that all of our TMH equipment is very rarely out of service.

“Combined with the regular monthly servicing and the strong aftersales support, reliability is just not an issue for us.”

A major paper manufacturer has commissioned 11 new Toyota forklifts at its Albury paper mill.

The Norske Skog Albury Mill bought the new Toyota forklifts as part of an extensive materials handling equipment upgrade.

Key factors in the purchase decision were cost-effectiveness of the Toyota forklifts and the ability of the Toyota product range to meet specialist operating requirements in the plant.

The 11 Toyota forklifts, plus one BT Lift Truck and two more specialised pieces of equipment, were supplied by Toyota Material Handling’s (TMH) recently established Albury branch.

Norske Skog procurement offi cer Paul Dwyer said the Albury mill has used Toyota forklifts for the last seven years.

“We reviewed the performance of our existing Toyota forklifts and we were happy to upgrade to new Toyota forklifts for most of the site,” he said.

“The new forklifts are 2.5 tonne, 3 tonne and 4 tonne payload models, some with bale clamps and others with roll clamps.

“We had a specifi c requirement for compact forklifts and the 3 tonne payload Toyota 32-8FGK30 compact forklift model met that need.

“Those forklifts have to operate in confi ned areas within the plant and fi t inside the stores lift on the operating fl oor.

“The Toyota product range also meant we could buy battery-electric forklifts from the same supplier, to use in areas of the plant where we need to avoid a build-up of exhaust fumes.”

Mr Dwyer said Toyota previously serviced the Albury mill from its TMH Queanbeyan branch, but now has service support

just minutes away at the Albury/Wodonga branch - a major advantage for the 24/7 manufacturing operation.

TMH Albury/Wodonga branch manager Gareth Conlan said the contract to re-equip the Norske Skog plant highlighted the depth and versatility of the Toyota forklift product range.

“Toyota’s counter-balance forklift range met most needs within the plant, and the full TMH product range means we could also supply the BT Lift Truck,” he said.

“In addition, our branch has supplied and will service two highly specialised units for the mill.”

The new Toyota forklifts at the Norske Skog Albury mill are two 7 tonne payload forklifts, a 7-FDU70 and 5-FD70, a 4 tonne payload 02-7FG40, three 2.5 tonne payload 32-8FG25 models, three compact 32-8FGK30 forklifts, and two battery electric forklifts - a 6FBRE16 and a 7FBE20.

The BT Lift Truck is a 2 tonne payload Levio LSE200 electric pallet truck.

The Norske Skog Albury mill commenced production in 1981 and ranks among the leading newsprint production facilities in the world.

Its annual production capacity of around 274,000 tonnes represents about 40 per cent of the newsprint and related grades used in Australia each year.

The mill utilises up to 35 per cent recycled fi bre, which is produced in Australia’s fi rst large-scale newsprint de-inking plant at the Albury site.

TMHA Makes Major OH&S Investment

Forklift-truck industry leader Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has made a major contribution to the occupational health and safety of its employees by purchasing 18 automatic defi brillators for use in its offi ces nationally.

All TMHA offi ces across Australia will have a defi brillator fi tted on site, while three of the largest offi ces (in Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne) will each have two units.

TMHA Executive Vice President and COO, Steve Takacs, said the company bought the defi brillators to allow the immediate treatment of staff members or visitors who suffer a sudden cardiac arrest.

“It is sobering to realise that 55,000 heart attacks, or one every 10 minutes, occur in Australia every year,”

“Of those people who suffer a heart attack 10,000 die each year, or one every 53 minutes.

“Crucially, one in four people who die from a heart attack do so within the fi rst hour of their fi rst symptom occurring,” he said.

Mr Takacs said the TMHA initiative is consistent with its parent company Toyota Industries Corporation’s philosophy of zero harm to its people and the environment.

“We aggressively promote a culture of safety fi rst; our people are constantly reminded not to undertake any activity that may cause them or others harm,” he said.

The fully automatic defi brillators require no operator interaction beyond placing the electrode pads on the patient.

After the pads are applied, the fully automatic defi brillator evaluates the heart rhythm and, if a shockable rhythm is detected, delivers a shock without any responder assistance.

Voice instructions help guide the responder through the defi brillation process.

An independent fuel consumption test has confi rmed the huge potential in fuel savings of Hino Hybrid trucks, delivering a 21 per cent reduction in both fuel used and carbon-dioxide emissions.

As another step in the evolution of their successful online grocery business, Coles initiated the independent trial to gauge the fuel savings that could be achieved with Hino’s new generation Hybrid truck.

Coles Online and the Green Truck Partnership conducted a fuel comparison on local delivery runs in the Sydney metropolitan area, using a Hino Hybrid 616 Short AMT and a Hino 616 Short Auto diesel truck.

Based on the trial results a fl eet of 50 trucks, each covering 650km per week, could save nearly $160,000 a year in fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30 tonnes over 12 months.

Coles Online National Customer Delivery Manager Iain McLean said the Green Truck Partnership team fi tted both wide-cab Hino trucks with data recorders and tested them for four weeks on like routes around metropolitan Sydney.

“Specifi c information was collected on the time spent idling, average speed and the number of stops per kilometre travelled,” he said.

“The data from the two trucks was validated daily and any

data where the driving cycles of the two trucks was markedly dissimilar was excluded from the results.”

Hino Australia Divisional Manager, Product Strategy, Marketing and Dealer Development, Alex Stewart, said Hino Hybrid trucks offer impressive fuel savings with no penalty in additional service costs.

“Hino’s new-generation 300 Series Hybrid trucks have exactly the same regular service intervals and service times as Hino’s conventional diesel trucks,” he said.

“Indeed, Hino Hybrid operators should enjoy additional savings when compared with a diesel truck because the regenerative braking of the Hybrid model saves on wear to the friction brakes.

“The electrical components in the Hybrid system - the motor, inverter and 288-volt nickel-metal hydride battery - are maintenance-free.

“The battery has an eight-year warranty and is also used in the Lexus RX 450h sports utility vehicle, thereby confi rming its quality and durability,” he said.

The Green Truck Partnership is a New South Wales government initiative designed to provide real-world case studies for the Australian road-freight industry on the use of

clean technologies and fuels.

Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has retained overall national forklift market leadership and achieved a 26th consecutive year of dominance in internal-combustion counter-balance forklifts.

Three Toyota forkOffi cial Australian Industrial Truck Association (AITA) industry sales results for the 2012 calendar year show TMHA captured approximately 32 per cent of the total Australian forklift market.

TMHA sold in excess of 5,400 forklifts during 2012 which was over 18 per cent more than TMHA’s total 2011 sales.

Most of the growth was due to a big jump in sales of TMHA battery-electric forklifts, which grew by over 750 units for the year.

This success saw TMHA’s share of the battery electric forklift segment grow to over 30 per cent.

TMHA executive vice president and COO, Steve Takacs, said the

company’s 2012 results refl ected its increased commitment to the warehouse equipment market.

“We focused on the warehouse equipment segment last year by launching several new battery-electric forklift models - and our customers have responded positively to that,” Mr Takacs said.

“To be number one confi rms Toyota’s trusted name in forklift trucks and the quality of TMHA’s range of counter-balance and warehouse equipment products.”

TMHA also remained the clear number one in the engine powered forklift category in 2012, with sales of over 2,500 units.

TMHA accounted for one in every three internal combustion forklifts sold in Australia, with a market share of more than 33 per cent.

It has now led the Australian internal combustion counter-balance forklift market uninterrupted for 26 years.

Toyota Racing reveals 2013 Le Mans hybrid challenger

Toyota Racing has unveiled the revised TS030 Hybrid car which will spearhead the team’s quest for victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Following a successful roll-out earlier this month, Toyota Racing begins the fi rst full test of the 2013-specifi cation TS030 Hybrid at Paul Ricard in southern France today.

After an impressive debut in the WEC in 2012, including three victories in just six races, the team returns with an ambition to win both the Le Mans 24 Hours and the WEC title.

The team will again utilise the Toyota Hybrid System - Racing powertrain, developed exclusively for motorsport by Toyota’s motorsport division.

A unique super capacitor-based hybrid system delivers 300hp (224kW) of boost automatically, on top of the 530hp (395kW) generated by a 3.4-litre normally aspirated V8 petrol engine.

Due to regulation changes, Toyota’s motorsport division in Higashifuji has fi ne-tuned this year’s powertrain to improve power, effi ciency, management of component usage and reliability.

The race-winning TS030 Hybrid chassis has also been modifi ed for the upcoming season, with increased performance, reliability and serviceability the priorities.

A revised aerodynamic package, including an updated monocoque, will also deliver improved performance while minimising the impact of updated regulations in 2013 which increase the minimum weight for manufacturer LMP1 cars by 15kg.

Toyota has envigorated the surging SUV market by launching a new-generation RAV4 range that delivers advances in styling, performance, handling, economy, comfort and value for money.

RAV4 enters its 20th year on the local market with a sportier look and sharper driving dynamics that include a new all-wheel drive (AWD) system and, for the fi rst time, a selectable Sport mode on most models.

Toyota has extended the RAV4 range from 13 to 16 variants with three new engines, including - for the fi rst time - a turbo-diesel with fuel consumption as low as 4.9 litres/100km* on the highway.

All three engines come with a choice of transmissions and equipment grades: entry-level GX and upmarket GXL across the range, plus a premium Cruiser grade in AWD petrol and diesel.

Fourth-generation RAV4 prices start at $28,490# for the 2WD petrol with six-speed manual - $500 below the lowest price for the outgoing range.

AWD versions are priced from $31,990# - identical to the superseded vehicle - and the new range tops out at $48,990#, or $1,000 less than the previous RAV4 range.

Signifi cant news for Australian customers is the introduction of turbo-diesel RAV4 variants from $35,490# - a keener price than most diesel rivals in its segment.

Each of the new powertrains delivers improved combinations of performance and economy while the new Dynamic Torque Control AWD system offers enhanced on-road handling and

safer driving.

RAV4 2WD variants are powered by a 107kW 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox or MultiDrive Sport CVT, a continuously variable automatic transmission that also provides drivers with a sporty, sequential seven-speed mode.

AWD customers can choose from two engines and two transmissions - a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel available with either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

The 2.5-litre AR petrol engine, proven in the latest generation Camry, develops 132kW and 233Nm.

The common-rail turbo-diesel pumps out 110kW and, most signifi cantly, has maximum torque of 340Nm available from 2000 to 2800rpm.

Combined-cycle fuel consumption and CO2 emissions range from a low of 5.6 litres/100km and 149 grams/km for the manual diesel to just 8.6 litres/100km and 200 grams/km for the 2.5-litre petrol manual^.

Sport mode, fi tted to all but the manual 2WD variants, contributes to better handling and a more dynamic, sporting drive by decreasing power-steering assistance to give the driver a more direct feel.

It also sharpens throttle response and adapts the control logic for the automatic and CVT gearboxes to allow for more responsive gearshifts.

In AWD models, front-wheel drive is automatically engaged under normal driving conditions to improve fuel economy.

The new Dynamic Torque Control AWD system provides greater stability and agility on both wet and dry roads, offering customers a confi dence-inspiring, more intuitive and engaging driving experience.

Toyota’s latest SUV incorporates a more comfortable and focused driving position, a lower centre of gravity, retuned suspension, revised electric power steering, hill-start assist and, on AWD models, an electronic diff lock.

Seven airbags, stability and traction control, anti-skid brakes, tilt-and-telescopic steering column and cruise control are all standard equipment, while automatic AWD models have downhill assist to help manage slippery descents.

RAV4 has been engineered to achieve fi ve-star European and Australian NCAP safety ratings.

RAV4 GX grade is fi tted with 17-inch steel wheels as standard (available from March production), projector-style headlamps, CD tuner audio and fabric seat coverings.

As with every new RAV4, it features Bluetooth™ connectivity**, six speakers, a 60/40 split-fold rear seat that reclines, roof rails, rear spoiler, roof-hinged luggage door, cargo net, tonneau cover, 60-litre fuel tank and, on AWD variants, sound-deadening windscreen.

Mid-level GXL gains 17-inch alloy wheels, reverse camera, display audio, sporty seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, rain-sensing wipers, power-retractable exterior mirrors, keyless smart entry and push-button ignition.

Top-grade Cruiser models are distinguished by satellite navigation, blind-spot monitor, power-operated luggage door, high-intensity discharge headlamps, eight-way power driver’s seat and a tilt-and-slide moonroof.

New RAV4’s distinctive body is shorter and lower - emphasising its improved dynamic capabilities and versatility.

It adopts signature Toyota design elements and, most noticeably, sees the spare wheel relocated from the back door to under the cargo fl oor.

The load-space lip height is just 645mm above the ground. Volume is 577 litres with a temporary spare wheel or 506 litres with an optional full-size spare.

Exterior details provide a cleaner, more powerful and more dynamic presence, including a large opening in the black resin front bumper and a smaller grille running full width between the headlamps.

The resin fi nish has been extended to form a tough, durable skirt around the base of the entire vehicle, including the wheel arches, providing off-road protection and emphasising the new RAV4’s muscular stance.

Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO) has maintained its position as the global number one supplier of material handling equipment for a record 12th year.

Respected German material handling magazine dhf Intralogistik has named TICO the global number one for the 12 months to 31 March, 2012.

TICO is the parent company of Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA), Australia’s leading supplier of forklift trucks.

The two magazines named TICO the sector leader in their world ranking lists of 2011–12 based on sale of materials, which amounted to €5.173 billion (approximately $AUS6.7 billion) and a 24 per cent increase on the 2010–11 result.

TICO was the only supplier on the list to cross the fi ve billion Euro threshold, once again establishing itself as the worldwide market leader and further increasing its lead over its nearest placed rival.

Dhf Intralogistik said Toyota sold 184,000 forklift trucks in 2011.

Companies must generate a turnover of at least 10 million Euros during the reporting year to be eligible for inclusion in dnf Intralogistik’s world ranking list.

TMHA Executive Vice President and COO Steve Takacs said Toyota’s success in material handling was due to constantly meeting customer expectations.

“TICO has a clear goal ahead: to accelerate growth and put into practice its Vision 2020 initiatives,” he said.

“These include being of service in every aspect of customer relations and keeping its commitment to the highest level of safety, environment sustainability, quality, cost and delivery standards.

“It also speaks volumes about Toyota’s effi cient manufacturing systems and ability to deliver market-leading equipment with a high level of after-sales support.”

TICO’s material handling division – Toyota Material Handling Group (TMHG) – has fi ve regional organisations covering Japan, China, North America, Europe and international.

In Australia, Toyota has led the counter-balance forklift market continuously for 26 years.
