PERMIT #137 THE HISTORY OF CANDY CANES By Brenna Hall So, you buy candy canes for the kids or for the decorations every year but do you really know where they come from? The candy cane is a Christmas tradition that many hold dear but nobody really knows why. Let’s face it -- the only things we really know about candy canes is that they taste good and that they are red and white. Whether the story of the candy cane is a legend or if it is true is not certain, but this is how the story goes: About two hundred-thirty years ago at the Cologne Cathedral, the children that went to church there were really loud and noisy. They often moved around and would not pay attention to the choirmaster. This was especially difficult for the choirmaster when they were supposed to be sitting still for the long living Nativity ceremony. So to keep the children quiet, he gave them a long, white, sugar candy stick. He couldn’t give them chocolate or anything like that because the people at that church would think it was sacrilegious. So he gave them the stick and he bent it on the end to look like a cane. It was meant to look like a shepherd’s cane, and so it reminded the children of the shepherds at Jesus’ birth. In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant in Wooster, Ohio put candy canes on his Christmas tree and soon others were doing the same. Sometime around 1900 candy canes came to look more like what we know them as today with the red stripes and peppermint flavoring. Some people say the white color represents the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the wounds he suffered. They also sometimes say that the peppermint flavoring represents the hyssop herb used for purifying and spoken of in the Bible. The shape also looks like the letter “J” for Jesus, not just a shepherd’s cane. It is possible that these things were added for religious symbols, but there is no evidence that is true. Around 1920, a man in Georgia named Bob McCormack wanted to make candy canes for his family and friends. He later started mass-producing candy canes for his own business which he named Bob’s Candies. This is where many of our candy canes come from today. Your newsletter can now be viewed online at www.krenekprinting.com (Newsletters - Hwy 6 Area - Towne Lake) New

THE HISTORY OF CANDY CANESBy Brenna Hall

So, you buy candy canes for the kids or for the decorations every year but do you really know where they come from? The candy cane is a Christmas tradition that many hold dear but nobody really knows why. Lets face it -- the only things we really know about candy canes is that they taste good and that they are red and white.

He couldnt give them chocolate or anything like that because the people at that church would think it was sacrilegious. So he gave them the stick and he bent it on the end to look like a cane. It was meant to look like a shepherds cane, and so it reminded the children of the shepherds at Jesus birth.

The shape also looks like the letter J for Jesus, not just a shepherds cane. It is possible that these things were added for religious symbols, but there is no evidence that is true.

Around 1920, a man in Georgia named Bob McCormack wanted to make candy canes for his family and friends. He later started mass-producing candy canes for his own business which he named Bobs Candies. This is where many of our candy canes come from today.

Your presence is requested at the launch of Messiah Lutheran Churchs Sunday morning experience,

beginning January 15th, 2012 Our new worship schedule is as follows:

For more information on each worship gathering, visit our website at www.messiahlc.org.

8:00 AM - Traditions (Traditional Lutheran Worship) 9:15 AM - Discovery Hour (Learning for ages 2 thru adult) 9:30 AM - The Gathering NEW! (Casual Contemporary Worship) 10:45 AM - The Crossing (Tradition meets Contemporary Worship)

11522 Telge Road Cypress, TX. 77429

Dear Santa: Ive been a good mom all year. Ive fed, cleaned and cuddled my two

children on demand, visited the doctors office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughters girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my sons red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when Ill find anymore free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes:

Id like a pair of legs that dont ache after a day of chasing kids (in any color, except purple, which I already have). I want arms that dont flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. Id also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If youre hauling big ticket items this year Id like a car with fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music.

It would be nice to have a television that doesnt broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, Yes, Mommy to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained

toddler, two kids who dont fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, Dont eat in the living

room and Take your hands off your brother, because my voice seems to be just out of my childrens hearing range and can only

    be heard by the dog.

And please dont forget the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent colors and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet making the in-laws house seem just like mine.

If its too late to find any of these products, Id settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you dont mind I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family; or if my toddler didnt look so cute sneaking downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pajamas at midnight.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you dont catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but dont eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

    Yours Always...Mom.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

Dont forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCHBLUE CHRISTMAS WORSHIP SERVICEChristmas can be a painful time for some. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may trigger some other sadness; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio and television, in shopping malls and churches about the happiness of the season, about getting together with family and friends, reminds many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation - all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone.

Our spirits sink, as the days grow shorter. We feel the darkness growing deeper around us. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us.

For these reasons, Covenant Lutheran Church, 3785 Barker Cypress Rd, Houston offers a special Blue Christmas (also known as Longest Night) service on December 21st at 7:00 PM.

Come out and join in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge that Gods presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle - and that Gods Word comes to shine light into our darkness. Everyone, regardless of church background (or lack of it) is welcome. The short service will be followed by a brief time for light refreshments and fellowship for those who care to linger.

Many of the present-day holiday rituals in our country originate in the Nordic/German traditions and come flavored with the spices of Europe. We invite you to take a little journey to early nineteenth-century Bavaria and the surrounding regions to explore the roots of modern Christmas.

As always, this interactive family friendly show will include superb music, lovely costumes, and traditional dances. Our adult and childrens choruses will add to the warmth, as will performances by accomplished guest artists, including an Alphorn duet and yodlers, who are genuine interpreters of Bavarian culture.

A keepsake booklet containing information about the Bavarian celebrations and songs featured in the show is included with the ticket.

Dont miss this heartwarming event and join in with our nationwide family of returning Revels fans.

Jordan merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. as a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordans heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Childrens Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Childrens on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordans focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

LA-FUNDACION.NETThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that about 220 million tons of old computers and other technology hardware are trashed in the U.S. every year. At the same time, 43% of US households do not have a computer at home. This huge disparity is commonly referred to as the Digital Divide. La-fundacion.net in partnership with community organizations throughout Texas, is trying to bridge the gap by placing donated computers in the hands of those who do not have access to technology. La-fundacion.net collects donated computers that once refurbished, upgraded and loaded with legal copies of Windows are provided to organizations like The Womens Home of Houston, churches, community centers or directly to Public School Children who do not have a home computer in partnership with Public Schools such as Houstons Hamilton Middle School. Recycling your old computer or other electronic equipment is a great way to help those who cannot afford access to technology, but it can also help keep the environment free from dangerous pollutants and can even mean a few extra dollars in your pocket at tax time. Next time you upgrade your computer, your cell phone, etc, consider donating your old equipment to la-fundacion.net. La-fundacion.net is a 501(c)(3) Tax Exempt Nonprofit Foundation based in Texas and Florida whose mission is to provide Technology and Education to those being left behind by the Information Age.
