THE HISTORY OF CANDY CANESBy Brenna Hall

So, you buy candy canes for the kids or for the decorations every year but do you really know where they come from? The candy cane is a Christmas tradition that many hold dear but nobody really knows why. Lets face it -- the only things we really know about candy canes is that they taste good and that they are red and white.

Whether the story of the candy cane is a legend or if it is true is not certain, but this is how the story goes: About two hundred-thirty years ago at the Cologne Cathedral, the children that went to church there were really loud and noisy. They often moved around and would not pay attention to the choirmaster.

This was especially difficult for the choirmaster when they were supposed to be sitting still for the long living Nativity ceremony. So to keep the children quiet, he gave them a long, white, sugar candy stick. He couldnt give them chocolate or anything like that because the people at that church would think it was sacrilegious. So he gave them the stick and he bent it on the end to look like a cane. It was meant to look like a shepherds cane, and so it reminded the children of the shepherds at Jesus birth.

In 1847, a German-Swedish immigrant in Wooster, Ohio put candy canes on his Christmas tree and soon others were doing the same. Sometime around 1900 candy canes came to look more like what we know them as today with the red stripes and peppermint flavoring.

Some people say the white color represents the purity of Jesus Christ and the red stripes are for the wounds he suffered. They also sometimes say that the peppermint flavoring represents the hyssop herb used for purifying and spoken of in the Bible. The shape also looks like the letter J for Jesus, not just a shepherds cane. It is possible that these things were added for religious symbols, but there is no evidence that is true.

Around 1920, a man in Georgia named Bob McCormack wanted to make candy canes for his family and friends. He later started mass-producing candy canes for his own business which he named Bobs Candies. This is where many of our candy canes come from today.

Dear Santa: Ive been a good mom all year. Ive fed, cleaned and cuddled my two

children on demand, visited the doctors office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground and figured out how to attach nine patches onto my daughters girl scout sash with staples and a glue gun.

I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my sons red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when Ill find anymore free time in the next 18 years. Here are my Christmas wishes:

Id like a pair of legs that dont ache after a day of chasing kids (in any color, except purple, which I already have). I want arms that dont flap in the breeze but are strong enough to carry a screaming toddler out of the candy aisle in the grocery store. Id also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If youre hauling big ticket items this year Id like a car with fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music.

It would be nice to have a television that doesnt broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking daughter doll that says, Yes, Mommy to boost my parental confidence, along with one potty-trained

toddler, two kids who dont fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools. I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting, Dont eat in the living

room and Take your hands off your brother, because my voice seems to be just out of my childrens hearing range and can only

be heard by the dog.

And please dont forget the Playdoh Travel Pack, the hottest stocking stuffer this year for mothers of preschoolers. It comes in three fluorescent colors and is guaranteed to crumble on any carpet making the in-laws house seem just like mine.

If its too late to find any of these products, Id settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you dont mind I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely. It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family; or if my toddler didnt look so cute sneaking downstairs to eat contraband ice cream in his pajamas at midnight.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back. Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the chimney and come in and dry off by the fire so you dont catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but dont eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

GARDENING TIPS FOR DECEMBER If a long flowering period is desired, pansies should be placed in their permanent beds not later than this month. Fertilize monthly with manure, super-phosphate or a liquid high-phosphate product. Keep flowers picked for more bloom.

Take tulips out of cold storage and plant late this month.

Fertilize established trees, spring-blooming shrubs, spurias and sweet peas (after they are a foot tall) with a fertilizer such as 13-13-13; Louisiana iris with cotton seed meal and manure.

Azaleas and camellias may be moved now. Keep moist to lesson cold weather damage. May acidify again.

Last month to plant early blossoming spring bulbs, speciosum and other varieties of lilies. Mulch.

Water plants well before a freeze; dry roots are easily damaged.

Dont forget to provide food and fresh water for birds. More birds die from lack of water than lack of food.

Craft Shows and FestivalsTHE CY-FAIR HOLIDAY & HEALTH FESTIVAL AND LAYLA GRACE 5K

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival and Layla Grace 5K will be held at the Berry Center on Dec. 3rd. This family-friendly, community event is free to the public and will feature over 100 exhibitors to help Cypress residents get into the holiday spirit and help raise money for a good cause.

Attendees can shop for holiday gifts as they get professional pictures with Santa, sample food and drinks, enjoy shows by local dance troupes and childrens choirs, have health screenings and beauty procedures done on-site, bring the kids to play in the Best Buy Mobile/Gaming area, and win prizes and raffles throughout the day.

The Cy-Fair Holiday & Health Festival is held in conjunction with the Layla Grace 5K. Layla Grace Marsh lost her battle with Neuroblastoma at age 2. Her parents, Cypress residents, formed the Layla Grace Childrens Cancer Research Foundation to fund research into high-risk pediatric cancers and to empower parents who have children diagnosed with cancer. The Layla Grace 5K Run/Walk and Kids One Mile Run Run begins and ends at the Berry Center. Entry fee for the 5K Run/Walk is $25 and for the Kids 1 Mile Fun Run, only $15. The Cornerstone United Methodist Church (CUMC) will be hosting a Live Nativity on Saturday, December 3rd from 6-8 pM, as we transform the front area of the church into scenes that will depict the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. There will be shepherds with their sheep, the Three Wise Men and a camel, Mary and Joseph with baby Jesus in a manger and an angel portraying this holy event. Jordan merecka was born with multiple congenital heart defects, including Dextrocardia (his heart was on the wrong side of his chest). As a child, he experienced two open chest surgeries, several surgical revisions and an implantable defibrillator. For many years after his early surgeries, Jordan was able to live an active childhood. as a teen, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and at school, he participated in FFA (Future Farmers of America). But, in September 2010, Jordans heart began to fail and he was placed on a waiting list for a heart transplant. With medical treatment, he was able to attend school as he waited. At the start of 2011, the senior at Cypress Woods High School was looking forward to three major milestones in his life: his prom on May 27th, his eighteenth birthday on May 29th and his graduation on June 5th. In April 2011, his health took a turn for the worse and he was admitted to Texas Childrens Hospital with heart failure symptoms and kidney insufficiency. He critically needed a heart transplant. Over the weekend of May 21st, all of his organs began to fail acutely and he could not breath on his own because his heart was so weak. On May 22nd, Jordan received the Total Artificial Heart that saved his life. Jordan missed his prom, but thanks to a diligent heart-failure team and the availability of the artificial heart, he celebrated his birthday at Texas Childrens on May 29th - a week after his surgery. On June 5th, Jordan watched his graduation ceremony online while his 16-year-old sister walked across the stage to accept his diploma on his behalf. His class rose to their feet for a standing ovation. Jordan has been accepted at Texas A&M University Galveston and looks forward to studying marine biology. But for now, Jordans focus is on gaining his strength and being ready for his new heart.

HOUSTON FIRE FIGHTERS MAKING HOUSTON THE CITY WITH THE

BIGGEST HEART FOR MDAIts official, Houstonians through the Houston Fire Fighters raised a record breaking $509,961 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association making them the #1 Fill-the-Boot department in the country for the last 9 out of 10 years raising more than $6.3 million during that time.

For more than 50 years fire fighters have helped MDA by filling their boots with donations from the citizens of their community. Houston Professional Fire Fighters Local #341 will begin their 2012 Fill-the-Boot fundraising campaign for the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Saturday February 11, 2012 during the hours of 10 AM and 2 PM. Fire Fighters will also be out March 10th, April 14th and May 12th to collect funds for the campaign.

The Fire Fighters rely on support and donations from the community for the success of the campaign. Proceeds raised during the street-side campaign will help support MDA services and research programs, including MDAs outpatient clinics at Texas Childrens Hospital and The Methodist Neurological Institute. Money raised from Fill-the-Boot also sends young people ages 6-17 to MDA summer camp, held in Burton, Texas.

StandUp For Kids is an all volunteer organization dedicated to saving the lives of at-risk and homeless kids through volunteer outreach efforts. Our volunteers search the streets in order to find, stabilize and otherwise help homeless and street kids improve their lives. Every day throughout the US thirteen kids die on the streets from abuse, disease and suicide. According to recent statistics Houston has up to 2,500 kids living on the streets at any given time. Texas has the highest rate of homeless youth in the U.S.

StandUp For Kids needs supplies for our Houston program, which provides food, clothing, counseling and a safe environment for the homeless youth of Houston.
