PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE DISTRIBUTION Tuesday, January 23,
2013.
The Town of Wilton Republican Committee announced today its
unanimous adoption of a resolution
opposing new gun restrictions:
No new laws ought to be passed which further restrict the rights
of law abiding New Yorkers to possess
firearms. We endorse and uphold the 2nd Amendment to the United
States Constitution: A well-regulatedmilitia being necessary to the
security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear
arms shallnot be infringed.
The Committee is asking other Saratoga County GOP Town and City
Committees, to join us in adopting it.More importantly, however, is
its call for all New Yorkers, irrespective of party affiliation, to
join inprotecting fundamental Constitutional rights. Town Chairman
and County Vice-Chairman Scott Kingsleysaid, Our right to keep and
bear arms is a fundamental right that transcends party politics. I
hope allNew Yorkers will join us in defending it.
Before the recently passed legislation, New York State already
had some of the toughest gun-control lawsin the country. For
example, New Yorkers can not possess a handgun without a permit,
issued only aftera thorough police and judicial investigation,
which sometimes takes up to 6 months or more. No New
Yorker with a felony conviction or a history of mental illness
hospitalization may possess any firearm.And, no pistol permit
issued in upstate NY is valid in NYC. The Committee called for a
renewedcommitment by politicians, judges, and police to strictly
enforce the laws that were already on the books.
The right to bear arms is set forth in the 2nd Amendment to the
US Constitution. It was authored byThomas Jefferson, who insisted
it be added to the draft of the constitution being considered as
a
condition of his support. In fact the American Revolution began
when the British attempted to seize thearms stored by Patriots at
Concord and Lexington. We ought not to support the seizure, even by
attrition,
of firearms today, 237 years later.
Chairman Kingsley also questioned why the Saratoga Springs Board
of Education on why they would
discuss what events should or should not go on at the Saratoga
Springs City Center, a separateGovernment entity that the Board of
Education has no management of. "Mr. Palumbo should stick
toeducating our children instead of trying to kill legal business
activities that he personally disprovesSpeaking of educating of
children: Our school district covers a geographically diverse area
which includesurban, suburban, and rural populations where many
weapons are legally and responsibly owned.
Shouldn't a well rounded education include how to react if they
stumble across a weapon, handle onesafely and be respectful of all
firearms? (These activities are all activities of firearm
professionals?)Trying to shelter our children form reality will
only lead to a tragedy."
