“Buy Local” - buying close to home maybe more than a feel-good, it’s-worth-paying-more-for-local matter. A number of research-ers and organizations are taking a closerlook at how money flows, and what they’refinding shows the profound economic impactof keeping money in town.

At the most basic level, when you buy localmore money stays in the community. Anindependent study found that twice themoney stayed in the community when folksbought locally. Indeed, many local economies arelanguishing not because too little cashcomes in, but as a result of what happens tothat money. Money is like blood. It needs tokeep moving around to keep the economygoing. When money is spent elsewhere—atbig supermarkets, non-locally owned utilitiesand other services such as on-line retailers itflows out, like a wound. By shopping at thecorner store instead of the big box, consum-ers keep their communities from becoming“ghost towns”. “Buy local” campaigns serve anotherfunction: alerting a community about gaps inthe local market. For instance, if consumerskeep turning to on-line or big-box stores fora particular product—say, socks—thissignals an opportunity for someone local tomake and sell socks. This is the way product

Buying Local:innovations get made. The local produceradds creative elements that make either theproduct or materials used more appropriateto the place. The point is not that communities shouldsuddenly seek to be self-sufficient in all ways,but rather to shift the balance. Can you

produce more locally? Of course you can ifthe raw materials are there, and the rawmaterials are often human beings. And what about that higher cost of localgoods? After all, big-box stores got to be bigbecause their prices are low. The differencefalls away once you consider the increase inlocal employment as well as the relationshipsthat grow when people buy from people theyknow. Another argument for buying local is that itenhances the “velocity” of money, orcirculation speed, in the area. The idea isthat if currency circulates more quickly, themoney passes through more hands—andmore people have had the benefit of themoney and what it has purchased for them. Ifyou’re buying local and not at a chain orbranch store, chances are that store is notmaking a huge profit. That means more goesinto input costs—supplies and upkeep,printing, advertising, paying employees—which puts that money right back in thecommunity.

How It Boosts the Economy

By shopping at the corner store instead of thebig box, consumers keep their communities

When you shop at a local businessyou are in essence supporting your commu-nity.4. Shopping local supports the character ofour area. Our distinctive shops and servicescontribute to our quality of life and to thecharacter of the area. Shopping local keepsthese businesses here.5. Shopping local increases our tax base.When you support and invest your day-to-day dollar in the RM and Town of Ste. Annebusiness you are contributing to our tax basewhich improves the services we all benefitfrom. No local business means higher taxesfor everyone.

6. Local businesses invest in our region.When we support local business we supportthe future of our community. Businessesowned by Town of Ste. Anne and RM of Ste.Anne folks are less likely to leave thecommunity and are more invested in oursuccess.7. Supporting local business encouragesinvestment. Research is stating entrepreneursand skilled workers are more likely to investand settle in communities that preserve andsupport independent and distinctive busi-nesses.8. Local business offers choices. Over thelong term, successful local businesses areable to supply products based on localneeds, interests and demands rather thanbased on national sales strategies.9. Shopping local saves services. Private andpublic services tend to cluster around shops.As retail merchants disappear, so do servicessuch as hairdressers, banks, restaurants, andother businesses.10. Shopping local saves you time andmoney. By not travelling to out of the areashops, you are saving on fuel (money andthe environment) and time. By buying localand what you need, rather than all those“deals” on your way to cashier at a big boxstore, you are saving money and reducingitems that will just go to the landfill anyway!
