2 - COALDALE LEISURE GUIDE - SPRING & SUMMER 2014

Welcome to our Spring/Summer 2014 edition of the Town of Coaldale Leisure Guide. This guide was designed for you, our local residents, to help provide information on activities, programs and events throughout our com-munity.

Inside you will find information about community groups, sporting groups, recreational opportunities, town programming and volunteer opportunities.

The Leisure Guide is just one of the ways the Town of Coaldale is working to provide local resi-dents with up-to-date information as provided by the various sporting groups, community organiza-tions and programs operating in our town.

Increasing communications about Town activities, programs and events is one of the top priorities for the Town of Coaldale. We welcome every opportunity to share the stories of our community and encourages everyone to take time to read through the Leisure Guide.

As Coaldale continues to grow more and more people will come to call our community home. We want everyone to feel they are part of our community, our Coaldale.

Town Council is proud of the team of people in our community, both volunteers and Town staff, who work so hard to create and promote both recreational and cultural opportunities for our area residents.- Mayor Kim Craig

Due to the popular response to the town’s promotion of E-billing and the February prize draw, the town has decided to host a second draw.

Anyone who registers for E-billing by May 30, 2014 will have their name entered in the second draw for a chance to win a pizza gift certifi cate, movie passes or a family swim pass for the upcoming season.

Anyone who has previously registered for E-billing will be included in the draw.

Not only does E-Bill save time and reduce handling and mailing costs it also gives residents the convenience of being able to access their town bill anywhere they can access their email.

With E-Bill, residents can also receive their bills in a timely manner rather than by traditional mail delivery. Sending bills electronically is also more environmentally responsible as it doesn’t generate any actual paper billing.

Not only can residents receive their town bills by email but they can also receive the town’s monthly newsletter. If you would like to receive an E-Bill, please contact Julie at 403-345-1318. Th e E-Bill agreement form can alsobe found on the Town Website, www.coaldale.ca

Tax Installment Payment Plan (TIPP): Enrollment continues for the TIPP (Tax Installment

Payment Plan) for the 2014 taxation year. If you don’t currently enjoy the benefi ts of 12 monthly payments from January to December each year and would like to enroll in

the program, please return your signed application form to the Town. Applications are accepted up until May 31, 2014 for the 2014 taxation year. Application forms are available on our website: www.coaldale.ca , or at the Town offi ce.

18 - COALDALE LEISURE GUIDE - SPRING & SUMMER 2014

Community Recycling Site: Hours of Operation: Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.Location: 1421 – 13 Street, East of Town of Coaldale shop

Items accepted at this site: Cardboard & box board, Mixed paper, Newsprint & magazines, Books, Tin Cans, Glass, All electronics, Large metal items and Fridges, freezers, water coolers & air conditioners- for which a $20 fee is assessed.

Please note this is NOT a location for refund-able recyclables.

For any items not on this list please refer to the recycling pamphlet or the town’s website at www.coaldale.ca

Spring CleanupThe Town uses a coupon voucher system to

help offset the cost to dispose of additional waste. Landfi ll coupons/tokens are used to cover the City of Lethbridge’s disposal fees.

These coupons can be used by residents to dispose of additional waste that typically follows spring cleanup, household renovations and other “deep cleans.”

The goal of this program is to make spring cleanup and other residential maintenance more convenient and affordable for residents. Addition-

ally, the coupon service can be utilized year round, so home renovations do not have to coincide with an annual, and at times unpredictable, cleanup schedule.

For more information on the program go to Town’s website at coaldale.ca or http://www.coal-dale.ca/services/utilities-and-services/

Th is group is for individuals who are facing the challenges of separation or divorce and will feature discussion covering topics such as grief, loneliness, coping, health and wellbeing, self-esteem, parenting, dating, moving on, and redefi ning your life. Th is support group is hosted by Barons-Eureka-Warner Family and Community Support Services counsellor Lisa Vanden Dungen and is open to individuals living in the Lethbridge County, Coaldale, Taber, M.D of Taber, Warner, County of Warner, Raymond and Stirling.

Th is is a free group being held at the Coaldale Hub located at 2107-13 Street Coaldale. Th e group will meet every other week on Monday evenings for seven sessions starting March 3, 2014 at 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Coaldale Thunder is the Rep Soccer club in Coaldale and District; with both girls and boys teams from U10 to U18. Coaldale Thunder is very excited about the 2014 Outdoor Season. Again our teams will be playing in the Southern Alberta League with other teams in the Sunny South District as well as teams from Lethbridge and Medi-cine Hat.

Coaldale Thunder is very happy to have Fred Trinh back again for another season to offer his expertise to the Thun-der program. Fred has an extensive coaching background and has worked closely with developing young coaches within the game. Fred will oversee the overall planning, de-velopment and mentoring of the Thunder’s program while his coaching staff will carry out the day-to-day practices. Thunder is committed to building a long-term plan and development program for both our players and coaches.

If anyone is interested in coaching, you can go to the Coaldale Thunder website and click on the “I want to coach” button under the “Volunteer” tab. Thunder will continue to support our new and continuing coaches in paying for the certifi cation courses required.

As in the past the Thunder teams practices will be on Friday nights until the house league season is done at the end of June, and then the teams have the option to move the practices to whatever time works best for them. Thun-der teams usually play three tournaments throughout the season, one of which may be Provincial competitions as well as exhibition games, and games in the Southern Alberta League.

Thunder registration will be a Friday evening towards the end of April. Keep an eye on our NEW Coaldale Thun-der website for times, dates and locations. The new Coaldale Thunder website has just been launched, so keep an eye on it for new and upcoming information and events. If there is something that you don’t see on the website, go to the “Volunteers” tab and contact one of the board members. Alberta Birds of Prey Centre

As Canada’s largest birds of prey facility, the Alberta Birds of Prey Centre in Coaldale is unique.

Th e Centre is located in the northwest cor-ner of the community on 70 acres of wetland. Th e facility is a celebration of nature where hawks, falcons, eagles and owls have found a home. Visitors from around the world have visited the Centre over the years to interact with the birds.

Visitors may have the opportunity to hold a Great Horned Owl or its smaller counter-part, the Burrowing Owl and pose for once-in-a-lifetime photos. Th ose who enjoy the opportunity to feed the birds can do so with the resident fl ock of ducks at the facility.

Th e Hawk Walk gives visitors a chance to stroll pathways and check out a number of birds of prey sitting on their perches. Hav-ing a camera at hand is a must if you want to photograph a majestic Bald Eagle.

Flying demonstrations give birds a chance to work on their daily training and exercising while giving visitors a unique thrill as a fal-

con swoops overhead or a huge eagle soars in to land on a trainer’s arm. Every 90 minutes throughout the day, weather permitting, the centre puts on fl ying demonstrations.

While some of the Centre’s birds are only temporary residents, as they undergo rehab until they can be returned to the wild, oth-ers are given permanent homes at the Centre when their injuries are too serious to allow them to be returned to the wild. Th e display aviaries house some of these birds and there are even birds who serve as foster parents, helping to raise wild orphans.

Great Grey Owls, Snowy Owls, Saw Whet Owls and Ferruginous Hawks are just a few of the birds to be found in the aviaries located along the landscaped trails and ponds at the Centre.

Th e Centre opens May 10 with daily hours of 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Sept. 10. For more information on the Centre go to www.bur-rowingowl.com
