Over the past months Whitby Estate has hosted a number of Free Community Events. Community events are a wonderful way to get people outdoors and mixing with other locals. Our events are family focused and we try to ensure that all age groups can find something to enjoy at each event.

“For Mums and Dads -that is usually the coffee”, says Community, Sales and Marketing Manager, Sherryn Rietdyk. “The beauty is that people can walk down, spend some time and then walk back home. Stay for half an hour or stay for 2 hours – no need to pack up car, just a nice easy walk”

Here’s some photos of our events for you to enjoy.

How many times has IGA saved us all? Ever run out of milk or bread for school lunches, or forgotten that one key ingredient for that recipe?

IGA Mundijong has been owned and managed by the same local family for over 30 years. A lot has changed since they first opened their doors and they are glad to be constantly evolving to meet the needs of their customers. The team currently source as many products as they can from local suppliers. Fruit and vegies are delivered daily so they can provide the freshest produce available.

The local staff – and there’s over 30 of them – will do their very best to lend a hand. The team took out the 2018 IGA Customer Service Award for WA – a testament to their commitment to customer service.

IGA Mundijong also offers fresh coffee and pastries, a Lotto kiosk, liquor department and fuel.

Serpentine Jarrahdale Food and Farm AllianceThe Serpentine Jarrahdale Food and Farm Alliance was formed by local SJ resident Merri Harris. Merri is passionate about preserving the rural status of the SJ area. She and the SJFFA team want to find ways to engage local people and encourage them to enjoy locally produced food – and therefore support local farms.

The upcoming SJ Food and Farm Fest is one of the ways Merri and the team are able to provide an opportunity to bring local residents and local producers together. The event is an interactive festival where people from urban areas can meet people who own semi-urban rural properties and who produce food, products and services that benefit our community.

There is a long list of guest speakers, including Josh Byrne from ABC’s Gardening Australia. The kids will have a ball with activities including arts, making musical instruments and making music, face painting, craft activities, camel rides, pony rides and a petting zoo. There is even a pumpkin rolling competition for both big and little kids!

This year there is a fantastic new scarecrow competition that you get to vote on to choose the winner.

There’s a load more information on the SJ Food & Farm Alliance website: sjfoodandfarmalliance.com.au

The Whitby Estate Residents Association (WERA) is up and running! The committee currently has six members with two more members soon to be ratified. The group is committed to the Estate and welcome more resident involvement. As the Estate grows, opportunities for more resident and local community engagement will also increase. It would be wonderful to have a strong and diverse residents group. The group are positive, well organised and forward thinking.

Each Newsletter we will do a brief ‘get to know you’ for each of the committee members. Here is a short introduction to Sandra Hawkins, the President of the WERA – how she came to live in Whitby and brief glimpse into her professional and public service life.

The WERA group meet in the Whitby Land Sales office on the 3rd Tuesday evening of each month. If you would like more information on the WERA, you can email them directly via [email protected]

Whitby Estate Residents Association Out of the gates and running!

Current group focus: The WERA and other local residents are working with the SJ Shire to improve safety for pedestrians at the level crossing near Whitby. Shire President Michelle Rich is calling for local residents to support their campaign by writing or emailing the Transport Minister – Rita Saffioti.

You can lodge your support via email [email protected]

Whitby Estate is located within the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale, the fastest growing local government in WA. Our local Shire is committed to balancing the needs of a high growth area - environmental, economic and social needs. The area has a rich history of community involvement and one way our Shire facilitates this is by providing and hosting local interest events. This ranges from Story Time at the Mundijong Public Library, to business focused events to sporting and youth focused activities. There truly is an opportunity for everyone to participate.

Visit the News & Events page on the Shire website:

The group articulated their aims as:

· To promote the wellbeing of families on the Whitby Estate.

· To foster a community networking environment for all residents in and around the Whitby area.

· To encourage involvement in working with a unified voice and advocate best interests of Whitby for all residents.

Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale –

So much to offer!

“I seem to have done so many things throughout

my life by accident and the last one was buying

my home here in Whitby. I came along with Tony

Simpson when he was the Darling Range local

member of Parliament to officially open the Whitby

Estate. We arrived early and decided to walk around

to view all the display homes. I fell in love with one

and decided that I was going to move here.

I feel a special affinity for the estate as I was a

councillor at the Serpentine Jarrahdale Shire and

was one of the people to approve the development

of this estate. I had no idea at the time that I would

actually be living here. The minute I moved in it felt

like home.

As for my professional life – I have managed to do

quite a few things including being a professional

horse breaker for over 50 years. While doing this

I also owned and managed a local and interstate

horse transport business in Byford. There is a lot

more to tell but I’ll leave it at that!”
