New Publications Secretary is on Board Caryn McDermott is Epworth’s new Publications Secretary. Caryn is a 1998 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a degree in Visual Communication Technology and has been designing print media including wedding invitations, holiday cards, and business marketing for nearly 15 years. In her spare time, she enjoys the outdoors (biking, running, kayaking) and spending time with her friends and family.

She is very excited to take over the realm for the wonderful Renee Wuokko, as well, to meet with and work with all of our fabulous members and volunteers. We welcome Caryn to the Epworth staff!

Epworth’s Adult Mission Team needs your helping hands to touch the lives of vulnerable, often voiceless, people in Appalachia.October 7-12, 2013

An adult work team is being formed to assist Good Works, Inc., an excellent Christian organization bringing dignity, hope and community to those struggling with issues of poverty and homelessness in rural Athens, Ohio.

You will connect with nice folks as you work together on various projects involving home maintenance, or more advanced work depending on team skills. A variety of skilled and unskilled talents are needed. Your smile, interaction, and helping hands are the primary gifts needed. At the end of the week, the Epworth team will provide and serve a public meal to about 150 persons from this community. For details, please contact Bob and Marilyn Town.

Charge Conference AnnouncedSaturday, October 5Epworth’s Annual Charge Conference will be held on Saturday, October 5, from 9:00 AM to noon, at the Maumee United Methodist Church, as a part of a series of joint charge conferences across the district.

A special feature of each charge conference will be a teaching experience. The Reverend Mr. Bill Lyle will lead an exciting seminar entitled Leadership Development. Superintendent Marla Brown reminds us that Leadership is key to everything in the church. Every ministry, every activity, and every opportunity is impacted by the level of leadership brought to the table.

Learn how to identify, recruit, train, and supervise the most important asset you have in your church. There is no greater investment than developing a church full of servant leaders who are mature and growing!

Charge Conference is open to all members of the church. Members of the Administrative Council have full voice and vote. Please save the date, Saturday, October 5, for Epworth’s Charge Conference and an informative learning experience.

Telling the Greatest StoryScripture by HeartThe Scripture by Heart Biblical Storytelling Team brings the Word of God to life at Easter, Christmas, on the 4th Sunday of every month, and for special events. It’s not about memorizing verses word-for-word. It’s about capturing the spirit of the story and letting the Holy Spirit work through you to share the lessons and stories of the Bible.

Those who hear Scripture by Heart say it has helped deepen their faith and renewed their spirits. Those who present Scripture by Heart have said the same things. Our presenters often feel and understand even the most familiar parables and psalms on new levels after learning to tell the stories.

We are always seeking to add to our Scripture by Heart Biblical Storytelling Team. There are many ways to learn to tell The Story…one or more of them are yours! Scripture by Heart training classes are coming this fall. For more information, contact Beth Irwin at beth@epworth.com.

A Mission OpportunityAs part of our recent Saturday of Service, 11 members worked at one of Sunshine of NW Ohio's group homes. The home is located very close to our church. The goal was to meet the house manager and the ladies who live there and help out with some chores, inside and outside. We shared a pizza lunch.

The ultimate goal is to develop a relationship with Sunshine and the seven ladies who live there—a reaching out to our neighbors.

We are looking for folks who might be interested in this mission. Sunshine will offer some training and the time schedules can be flexible. We are thinking 2-3 people for 1 hour on a regular basis (every other week to start). Call the church to sign up.

It’s Time to Volunteer for Habitat Build

Pick up a form from the information desk in the narthex. It gives you instructions on how to sign up and gives you a list of all the different opportunities there are.

Habitat Build Food DonationsWould you like to help with the Habitat Build, but can’t really do any of the physical work? How about helping out with food donations instead!

Epworth is providing meals for certain days of several different weeks during the home restoration, with the first one being the last week of July. If you are willing to make or donate some of the food needed, we are asking that you simply bring it to Epworth’s kitchen. From there, we will make sure it is delivered to the home site at the proper time.

There is a sign-up sheet in the church cloister. You can also sign up on the Opportunites Page. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Karen Knight at 567.455.6861. Please also keep in mind any businesses (or your own place of employment) that may be interested in donating food OR the funds to purchase the food.

We would appreciate any help you could give!

Children’s Day Out This state-licensed weekday program is for two and three year olds. It is a chance for them to experience time away from Mom and Dad, gain a little independence and social skills, and make some new friends along the way. Children may come one day per week. We have openings on most days, however, please call the Education office for availability.

We will begin on September 3, so register now! There is a one-time $30 registration fee and a $50/month tuition fee.

Love Our LambsPreschool needs loving arms and warm hearts to care for our 3, 4, and 5 year olds at 9:45 and 11:00 on Sundays.

Health Ministries

I’ve been the Director of Health Ministries a little over a month and am amazed at the number of events the office and the Health Ministries Committee coordinate month-to-month and year-to-year. I am also humbled and inspired by the level of dedication our volunteers show in serving the homebound members of our Epworth family and to the community at large.

Your time, gifts, and talents are always welcome in Health Ministries. Here are a few ways you can volunteer:

• Caring Hearts: for those who can’t get to the church, a Caring Heart takes the love of Christ into the homes of others. A Caring Heart is partnered with one member of our congregation for conversation, compassion, and fellowship through home visits. Many of our Caring Hearts have developed deep friendships with the family they visit.

• Home Communion: once a month, we deliver Communion to the homes of Epworth members who are unable to attend services. There are kits and guides in the Health Ministries office.

• Events: The Health Ministries Committee coordinates annual and semi-annual events such as the Health Fair, Blood Drives, Flu Shots, Heart Day, and more. Extra hands for setting up and taking down are always welcome.

• Meals: Through the “Take them a Meal” website, we will coordinate volunteers to take meals to those recovering from surgery or illness, or perhaps who have welcomed a new baby and don’t have the time or energy to cook.

Health Ministries – What We Do and How You Can ServeBeth Irwin, Director of Health Ministries/Parish Visitor

Healing and Wholeness Service August 13 at 7:00 PMTom Amstutz, former University of Toledo Head Football Coach will offer his testimony at the Healing and Wholeness Service on Tuesday, August 13, at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. This quiet meditative service is a respite for reflection, prayer and communion. Come to the service to pray for others, to have the community pray for your special needs, and to pray for the hurt and brokenness in the world.

Pastor Keith Luke will lead the healing prayers and preside at the service of Holy Communion. Team Members Beth Irwin, BJ Brengartner, Dolli Darah, and Penny McCartney will participate in the service.

Macular Degeneration Support Group Facilitators NeededFor nearly 15 years, Epworth has been home to a Macular Degeneration Support Group, providing education, support, and fellowship for its members from the church and the community. The group meets on the second Monday of every month from September through May.

The Macular Degeneration Support Group needs facilitators beginning in September. If you are available in the mid-afternoon once a month, and are interested helping this well-loved ministry continue, contact Beth Irwin at 419.531.4236, or beth@epworth.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Wednesday, September 18

The American Red Cross needs to collect approximately 300 pints of blood per day to supply area hospitals. The Red Cross is their only blood supplier.

Blood has a finite shelf life. Plasma, which is used to treat burn patients and those with bleeding disorders, makes up about 55% of total blood volume and can be kept the longest. It can be frozen for up to a year. However, platelets, which are used to treat cancer patients or organ recipients, have a shelf life of only 5 days. Red blood cells are used in trauma and surgery patients, and have a shelf life of 42 days. Whole blood contains all of these components, as well as white cells, and that’s what’s collected when you donate a pint of blood during an American Red Cross blood drive. Among all blood donations, a small percentage remain whole blood donations and those are used for newborns and open heart surgery patients. Other pints are run through a centrifuge and separated into red cells, platelets, and plasma.

Think about it: your single pint donation could help three people!

And You Were There

Back by popular demand, the first person sermons for summer will take you back to the life and times of Noah, the neighbor of the woman who lost the

coin, Nicodemus the night visitor, and one of the disciples in the boat when Jesus calmed the storm. Pastor Bob and Pastor Keith will offer sermons that will give you a first-hand introduction to some famous and important Bible characters to help reveal timeless Bible truths. This sermon series will continue through August 11.

Epworth Sunday Morning Education Program

Nursery, Toddler, and Pre-schoolNursery and Toddler childcare meet at 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 in the pre-school wing. Our Toddlers learn from Play-n-Worship lessons geared to two year olds which let them know how much we love them, and how much God loves them.

Pre-school Education Preschool children ages 3 to 5 years-old not yet in kindergarten are invited to join us Sunday morning in rooms 112 and 114 for Play-N-Worship. Each month the children will explore a new Bible Point through stories, songs, and play. The children will also memorize a Bible verse, learn an action prayer, and collect Pennies for Jesus offering to buy Children’s Bibles to send with our mission teams. This exciting new approach to preschool education will have your child singing, praying, and worshiping all week long!

Elementary (Kindergarten through Fifth Grade) at 9:45In The Kingdom This SummerThis summer our Kingdom will be transformed into the city of Athens. Last year during VBS we visited Babylon. This year during summer Kingdom classes for our elementary children, we will be in Athens to learn about Paul’s dangerous journeys to share the truth about Jesus. If you would like to help for one week or two, or the whole summer, we have many ways you can help. You can be a shopkeeper, a tribe leader, a music leader, or Paul himself! All of the lessons are planned for you, and all of the materials are ready for you. The children would love to get to know you! Please sign up by calling the Education office. Even if you aren’t able to volunteer to help in Athens this summer, stop in to see what the children are experiencing. There is always room for visitors in Athens!

Elementary (Kindergarten through Third Grade) at 11:00WOW (Worship Our Way)This class meets in Bible Time Players (room 205) directly following the Pastor’s Children’s Moment. Each week the children will learn about God’s love through age appropriate lessons packed with hands-on learning through praise, worship, and prayer.

Sixth Grade SLAM class at 9:45This summer those who have finished sixth grade are invited to join the Junior High Donuts and the Bible class or assist in the elementary Kingdom class.

Adult Education at 9:45Adult Bible Study, Room 214We are doing an overview of the TV series “The Bible.” We will view the entire series, dividing it into roughly 20 minute segments. It will take many weeks to view the entire series. Our overview will consider whether the series is faithful to our understanding of the Scriptures, does it enhance our understanding of historical events portrayed in Scripture, would it be useful with new Christians, and how would it be viewed by unbelievers. Join us any Sunday for what usually turns out to be an active discussion.

From Noah’s Ark and Daniel in the Lion’s Den to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, this series took a walk through God’s story and the people in it. We are viewing clips from the series and discussing how stories of the Bible pertain to us today. We love new faces. We even have our own coffee pot!

Treasurer’s Report - July 20132nd Quarter 2013 Financial Results Show Favorable Variance

Epworth’s income over expense for the first six months of 2013 was $11,922 (136.0%) better than budgeted. Receipts from pledges, contributions and offerings was $3,747 (0.6%) better than budget and expenses were $8,175 (1.2%) lower than budget as shown in the table below.

*Receipts from pledges, contributions and offerings, which represent 96% of budgeted income, are not received equally each month, with larger amounts received at the beginning, as well as toward the end of the year, while operating, personnel, and other expenses are more equally spread throughout the year. These factors can cause large variances on a month-to-month basis. Nevertheless, through the first 6 month of 2013, we continue to sustain a pace that is ahead of budget. Total receipts from our Your House…Our House Campaign equaled $79,510 versus our goal of $75,000! Thank you once again for the tremendous generosity of our Epworth family!

Results of our financial performance for the nine months of the year will be published in the October Tower.
