advanced Time scale for the upgrades

Advanced LIGO commissioning expected to end: 2013 [LIGO

pres. at PAC G050255-01-R].

We need an advanced detector on the same timescale to remain in the network: Advanced Virgo

Virgo already has an “advanced” isolation system: we have the opportunity to improve significantly the sensitivity on a shorter timescale: Virgo+

advanced Virgo+

Virgo could be upgraded with a set of medium scale, incremental improvements with:

– Compatibility with the main Virgo subsystems (“plug and play”), same optical layout

– Limited shutdown– Limited commissioning time

Four packages have been proposed and funded:1. New laser, with limited power increase (2050 W)2. Mirror thermal compensation3. Electronics and control system upgrades4. Monolithic payloads with fused silica suspensions

Installation foreseen in 2008

advancedSteps towards Advanced Virgo

Four working groups have been set up at the end of 2005 to carry on the studies for Advanced Virgo:

– WG1: interferometer optical configuration, sensing and control (chairs: A.Freise, P.Hello)

– WG2: laser and optics for high power (chairs: P.La Penna, N.Man)

– WG3: suspensions and thermal noise issues (chairs: M.Punturo, P.Puppo)

– WG4: electronics and controls (chairs: A.Gennai, N.Leroy)

WG3 and WG4 are responsible also of the development of electronics and monolithic suspensions for Virgo+

advancedSteps towards Advanced Virgo

An Advanced Virgo coordinator has been appointed with the mandate of:– Coordinating the WGs activities– Coordinating the writing up of an Advanced Virgo Design by

November 2007

Document contents: – Detector design (options and path towards selection)– Sensitivity curve– General planning and cost evaluation

advanced Guidelines for R&D

GOAL: define the prioritary R&D lines for an Advanced Virgo in

2011

advanced R&D: priority list

Definition of the optical configuration, locking and alignment scheme, detection scheme

High power laser

Input optics compliant with high power

Output optics and photodiodes compliant with high power and with the chosen detection scheme

Monolithic suspensions

Mirrors and coatings

Vibration isolation and suspension control

Advanced Virgo (2011) is not expected to use:

– Cryogenics– Squeezing– Non gaussian beams

advanced Design options

Optical configuration– Change beam waist position– Use signal recycling– Use DC detection– Thermal compensation scheme

High power laser– Solid state or fibre laser

Input optics– EOM and Faraday compliant with high power– New telescopes for the new optical configuration– New input mode cleaner. Fibre mode cleaner

Output optics and photodiodes– New photodiodes for higher power– New OMC

ILIAS Annual Meeting – London, Oct 27th, 2006 G.Losurdo – INFN Firenze-Urbino 12

advanced Design options

Monolithic suspensions (already studied for Virgo+)– Make it compliant with heavier mirrors– Use ribbons– New engineering of ears, fibers, bonding

Test masses– New mirrors geometry– New coatings– New procedures for cleanliness

Vibration isolation and suspensions control– 6 d.o.f. control of the superattenuator top stage (tackling tilt

effect)– Electrostatic actuators

We expect to select most of the listed options in the Advanced Virgo Design document
