TOURNAMENT HISTORY

Softball first came onto the scene in Washington in 1979, when the WIAA crowned its first champion in the sport, Stadium High School. Slowpitch was the only form of the sport in Washington high schools at the time, offered as part of the spring season.

The adoption of slowpitch was gradual, as the number of schools that offered slowpitch only warranted one State Championships tournament until 1982, when a second classification State Championship was added. By 1987, all four of the WIAA classifications were playing in their own postseason tournament.

It wasn’t long after schools fully adopted slowpitch softball that a change began in the sport. Fastpitch softball was on the rise and was approved by the WIAA beginning in 1992. With fastpitch now introduced as a spring sport as well, schools and leagues around the state were likely forced to make a decision, compete in the more established and popular sport of slowpitch, or make the leap to offering fastpitch.

The latter of those two options proved to be more popular, however the growth of fastpitch followed a similar trajectory to that of slowpitch a decade earlier. The largest classification in the WIAA, which at the time was 3A, made a complete switch to fastpitch in 1992 but was the only classification to compete in the State Championship during the sport’s debut season. The 2A Fastpitch State Championship was added in 1993, but was held in addition to the 2A Slowpitch Championship.

It took until the late 1990s and early 2000s for a complete sea change to take effect. But when that change came, it swiftly instituted fastpitch as the style of choice for Washington softball. In 2002, the last WIAA Slowpitch Softball State Championship was played as Touchet claimed the title in the 1A classification.

It wasn’t until 2018 that the WIAA Executive Board voted to reinstate slowpitch upon the request of a small number of schools, primarily in the Spokane and Vancouver regions, which were offering the sport outside of state sanctioning. While the spring season belonged to fastpitch, there was an avenue to breathe life back into the slowpitch game by offering it during the fall season.

In it’s first season as a WIAA fall sport, 48 schools in Washington reported fielding a team in 2019. For some, the participants are made up of a number of fastpitch crossovers looking to play for their school in the fall. Others have reported reaching a new population of students entirely.

Based on the number of schools offering the sport, an eight-team bracket at both the 4A and 2A/3A level will be played in 2019. As the number of schools is expected to grow in the coming years, the State Championship format will be adjusted accordingly.

But one thing is for certain, for the first time in 27 years, we will be crowning slowpitch softball State Champions this weekend!
