NATURTEJOGEOPARKOF THESOUTHPLATEAUUNESCO Naturtejo Global Geopark, a territory uniting the municipalities of Castelo Branco, Idanha-a-Nova, Nisa, Oleiros, Penamacor, Proença-a-Nova and Vila Velha de Ródão, has aims goals to value the places that act as key- evidences of the Earth History, boosting the sustainable and responsible tourism and promoting the local communities. The great geomorphological, geological, paleontological, and geomining heritage sheltered in a multimillenary cultural landscape show elements of national and international relevance reflected in a History full of episodes and in a rural Culture with unique elements, where pagan, Roman, Arab, Jewish and Christian influences blend themselves.

UNESCO Global Geoparks

A Geopark is a territory that combines the protection

and promotion of the geological heritage with the local

sustainable development. The geological heritage of a

Global Geopark is internationally recognized and each

Geopark includes geosites or geomonuments that are

key witnesses for evolution of the planet Earth.

The UNESCO Global Geoparks establish bridges

between Geodiversity and other dimensions, such as

Biodiversity, History, Culture and Intangible Heritage,

based on sustainable development at different levels,

such as Geodiversity, the environment, the use of natural

resources, the fight against climate change, geological

risk management, the involvement of local communities

and the preservation of the heritages of the geoparks.

The differentiated uses and the socio-economic

dimension of the Geological Heritage can be the trigger

for regional development, settled on Conservation,

Education and Tourism.

Currently the UNESCO Global Geoparks Programme

includes 120 territories, spread across 33 countries

around the world.
