Arc Sud Bretagne

Between Vannes and Nantes, with the picturesque Guérande Peninsula lying to the south and the Rhuys Peninsula extending to the north, skirting the entrance to the magnifi cent Gulf of Morbihan. Its striking position at the confl uence of river and sea offers a unique and relaxing mix of scenery, national heritage and, not least, gastronomy.

The twelve communes that comprise the catchment area of Arc Sud Bretagne have pooled resources to ensure a warm Breton welcome to visitors to the area.

The Arc Sud Bretagne area lives in profound communion with water. Its coastline from the Gulf of Morbihan and La Baule offers beautiful beaches and coves. From Pénerf to the mouth of the Vilaine, beach goers and walkers can discover the call of the sea and animations that give it life. More to the east, up the Vilaine river to La Roche Bernard, the river welcomes visitors to boating, fi shing and other leisure activities.

On the west side of Arc Sud Bre-tagne area, jutting into the sea, Damgan, a resort and its 10 km of beaches offers astonishing lands-capes of lagoon and coastal paths. Its bracing air and generous climate make it ideal for strolling and leisure activities.

From Damgan, we can reach the western tip of Pénerf, a small port and its oyster farms. At the end of this thin strip of land stands the «En-glish Tower». The origin of this primi-tive lighthouse, the oldest fi re tower of the French Atlantic coast, remains mysterious. The date of its construc-tion is now a subject of debate among historians who agree to differ on whether it’s between the fi fteenth or sixteenth century.

In summer, from the port of Pénerf, there is a shuttle service between the east side of Tower Park, and Pencadénic, on the Rhuys peninsula.

FROM « PETIT ABER AU MÔLE », BY THE SHORE

North of the peninsula, the peace-ful estuary fl ows towards Ambon. Fishing from the shore or from sea kayaks can be practiced between the two banks of the river Pénerf which narrows until it becomes a stream. In Ambon, the maritime in-dustry remains highly active. The salt marshes, exploited until the 1930s, show evidence of this close link with the ocean.

In Damgan, the south-facing bea-ches invite you to practice a wide variety of activities where the be-nefi ts of land, sea and sky are truly appreciated.

Windsurfi ng, kite-surfi ng, kayaking or sailing are very popular and the beaches are also ideal for swimming, beach games and sunbathing.

To the west of Damgan, Kervoyal creek a short sandy shore can be found, sheltered from the wind and facing Pen Lan. It marks the bounda-ry of the mouth of the Vilaine.

Further north on the bay, a 4 km coastal path takes the visitor onto smaller paths along the sea shore and through the neighbouring vil-lages: Tréhervé, and Cromenach. The Bétahon shore is well suited for sport activities or simply relaxing. In the commune of Billiers on the other side, Pen Lan harbour, was a very active fi shing port in the nineteenth century. Today boating has replaced fi shing.You can admire the11m high, red and white lighthouse, dating from 1837, which indicates the channel of the Vilaine and the jetty built in 1881.You may also discover a replica of a nineteenth century fi shing boat : Belle de Vilaine.

The river has its source in Juvigné (Mayenne) and runs some 225 km down to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Vilaine River fl ows through La Roche-Bernard and the surrounding countryside before fl owing into the nearby Atlantic Ocean. Since the downstream construction of the Arzal Dam in 1970, this once capri-cious river is now a tranquil water-course offering a myriad of possibili-ties for recreation and relaxation.

The Arzal Dam is like a bridge between the Morbihan and Loire At-

lantique, and its pleasure boat port is the last port of call for the Breton Canals before they fl ow into the At-lantic Ocean.

Before the Arzal Dam and sluice were built in 1970, the Vilaine River was tidal and the local population were at the mercy of its ebb and fl ow. Maritime navigation regulations still apply to the Vilaine as far upstream as Redon. To this day, a number of veteran riggers still lie at anchor in the old port (vieux port) of La Roche-Bernard.

The “Ports of Call”(Escale d’une Rive à l’autre)brochure issued by the Comité Régional du Tourisme de Bretagne provides details of the most attractive navigable river sites in Brittanyand the Loire Region and describes the recreational facilities available.

FISH-PASS TO VISIT

The dam bridge of Arzal – Camoël, built to control water levels and which provides a large reservoir of drinking water, also offers an amazing experience. Do not miss the live ‘aquarium’ they have to count the fi sh passing through the dam that you can see in real time !

This fi sh-pass allows migratory fi sh to swim upstream to their

birthplace to spawn. Elvers (baby eels), migrating from the Sargas-so Sea on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean travel 6000 km to upstream the Vilaine river during the winter.

THE COMPLETE ANGLER

The Vilaine is a second-grade listed watercourse that offers excellent conditions for both sports fi shermen and the occasional angler. The river is well-stocked with eel, white fi sh (roach and bream) and carnivores such as pike and perch.

For lake angling, go to Pen Mur, si-tuated north to Muzillac, to fi sh pikes and pikeperches.

Fishing permit are compulsory if you wish to fi sh. All fi shermen without exception must respect the regula-tions. List of fi shing permits retailers is available at the Tourist Offi ce.

BEACHES RECREATIONAL FISHING At exceptional low tides miles of sand can be discovered on which sometimes remain edible shellfi sh and mollusk. Recreational fi shing has conventions, rules, licensing res-trictions and laws that limit the way in which fi sh may be caught; typical-ly, these prohibit the use of nets and the catching of fi sh with hooks not in the mouth. The most common form of recreational fi shing is done with a rod, reel, line, hooks and any one of a wide range of baits or lures such as artifi cial fl ies.

The Arc Sud Bretagne area is marked by its history that stems from its particular geography. Coexistence of sea and river with the interior has made it a place of exchange both protected and open to the world.

Still visible, the dolmens «des Grays» and «du Crapaud» in Billers, or the cross-menhir de Cravignan in St. Dolay attest to human presence since the Neolithic age.

The Roman Empire succeeded the maritime power of the Veneti, as shown by archaeological remains of the Gallo-Roman statuettes of Ni-villac now exhibited in Vannes. The remains of Roman roads and villas have been carefully excavated. Dis-covered at the church in Ambon are the remains of a Roman edifi ce of the lower empire (111rd - 1Vth cen-turies AD) an early Christian church

dating from the fi fth and sixth century and the remains of a Roman church.

With the Christian migration to Brittan, formerly Armorica, the her-mitages and monasteries fi rst built were the target of Norman attacks who regularly used the Vilaine river. Period during which Lord Bernhart, allegedly Viking, founded La Roche Bernard. His descendants pledge allegiance to the Dukes of Brittany.

In the Middle Ages, our territory was intimately linked to the Dukes of Brittany. In the eleventh and twelfth century, the Dukes of Brittany reside

on the Château de l’Isle on Marzan, since their principal residence was at Suscinio. The Duke Jean 1er Le Roux founded, in 1252, the Cistercian ab-bey of Prières in Billiers. Large fami-lies will also reside on our rich land and served the sovereign Breton.

This explains why several munici-palities of Arc Sud Bretagne have been listed for their rich heritage:La Roche Bernard «Petite Cité de Caractère,» The Guerno and Noyal Muzillac «Bourg du Patrimoine Rural de Bretagne.»

This period of ducal splendor for Brittany marked signifi cant develop-ment of its economy both maritime and territorial. This wealth caused wars of succession and wars of in-dependence.

The port of Pénerf was the fourth Breton port in the sixteenth centu-ry. Its activity associated with the transport of salt and wood in La Roche-Bernard continued to deve-lop reaching its peak in the late nine-teenth century.

Fierce battles between Catholics and Protestants in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries followed by the fi ghting between royalists and revolutionaries in the late eighteenth century preceded the era of econo-mic prosperity of the nineteenth cen-tury. La Roche-Bernard was also a leading Protestant centre along with Rennes and Morlaix.

Along the walking trail called «le Chemin des Ducs»,in Marzan, you can discover on board of the river Vilaine, a panoramic view on L’Isle site.On this peninsula, promontory of 23 meters overlooking the river, the former Dukes of Brittany built a castle around the XII century, a strategic place that allowed them to control trafficon the river Vilaine and to perceive some tolls.

Two Dukes of Brittany will die there,Jean Ier Le Roux in 1286 et Arthur II in 1312. Jean Ier le Roux used to spend some months in

his residence, the castle of «l’Isle» and has also residences in Vannes and Suscinio, where he could hunt. In 1252, he creates the Cistercian Abbeyof Prières in Billiers.

Today only traces of the fort remain, but it still offers a wonderful panoramic view.

The nineteenth century marked by romanticism brought a renewed inte-rest in the provinces and particularly Brittany, which became a popular destination attracting artists and wri-ters.

This new type of tourism infl uence the architecture of the late nineteen-th and early twentieth centuries. It was also at this time that the fi rst oyster parks appeared at Pénerf. in 1848.

Today minimal swim wear allows for maximum sunbathing but before the 19th century tanning was frowned upon by high society who preferred to stay in the shade to keep their skin white. Similarly swimming was done while remaining fully clothed.

In days of yore, the Vilaine River could be crossed only by boat, typi-cally at Guédas, a point between La Roche-Bernard and Marzan, which is to say, on the erstwhile «Royal Road» from Bordeaux to Brest. Crossing the Vilaine was often a hazardous undertaking given the tides in the ri-ver and the violent winds that swept across it – not to mention the occa-sional foolhardiness of the local vil-lagers. Accordingly, at the beginning of the 19th century, the elected of-ficials urged that a bridge be built. It was not until the Prefect of Mor-bihan was himself «inconvenienced», however, that the dossier was for-mally classified «urgent» : it is said that, returning one day from a visit to the mayor of La Roche-Bernard, the Prefect had taken close on six hours

(from ten at night until four in the mor-ning) to cross the Vilaine. A more li-kely explanation, however, is that the requisite funds were released on the ascension to the throne of Louis-Phi-lippe in 1830, when there was a per-ceived risk of insurrection on the part of the légitimistes (the supporters of the elder Bourbon line).

Whatever the reason, the first bridge over the Vilaine was inaugurated in 1839 after three years in construc-tion. It was a suspension bridge (the technique had recently been introduced into France) featuring two stonework access viaducts and a wooden platform. The remains of the viaduct support structure are vi-sible to this day. The new bridge was hailed as a triumph of civil enginee-ring technology – but not for long : strong winds tangled the support cables, causing extensive and fre-quent damage to the infrastructure.

In 1872, work started on a «provisio-nal» footbridge. This would remain in place until 1911, when a metal-arch structure was built to accommodate both pedestrians and the Quim-per-Nantes railway line. On August 15, 1944, a bolt of lightning hit a mine laid in the river by the occupying German Army; the bridge collapsed.

The ferry system was reinstated as an interim measure. Interim, that is, until 1948, when a pontoon origi-nally used in the Allied D-Day lan-dings in Normandy was put in place. This served for twelve years until, in 1960, a new suspension bridge was built along the lines of the Tancarville Bridge in the département of Seine Maritime in order to cope with aprogressively large throughput of vehicular traffic. That said, the two-lane system soon proved inade-quate, giving rise to the notorious bottlenecks of La Roche-Bernard.

The need for a bypass bridge was self-evident. Today, another suspen-sion road bridge (with a pedestrian walkway running along each side) has been built some six hundred metres upstream of its predecessor. This new Morbihan Bridge was ope-ned in 1996.

You can observe an imposing dormer window from Renais-sance period , the facade was partially destroyed in the XX century, to become a bakery.

CONSERVATION RESTORATION WORKSHOP

This workshop is located in the old port of La Roche Bernard, in a former warehouse built in 1890 called «Mai-son Bertho». It has been restored by the «Communauté de Communes», local authority, owner of the building.

Located on Pen Mur lake northof Muzillac. The Pen Mur watermill, was built in 15th century. Former property of François II, the last Duke of Brittany, this type of watermill dedicated to wheat or rye flour production was subsequently conceded to Prières’s Abbey at Billiers.After the French Revolution,this mill belonged to various owners, before it was reconverted in the 1940’s. Abandoned,it was restaured in 1996.The 5 cm width of the wheel crushes linen or cotton cloth and turns it into pulp. This mixture is then formed, pressed, dried, glued and smoothed into sheets.

The maritime Vilaine walk (33 km, 314 meters in positive height, red) follow the estuary from the mouth of the Vilaine to Arzal Dam. The estuary and countryside afford magnifi cient views. There are two laps (numbers 15 and 16) and several less or more diffi cult ones (blue or green line) : it’s up to you !!

In La Roche Bernard itself, the listed Bernard Rock offers an exceptional view of the Vilaine and the yachtharbour. The cannons mounted onthe Rock were recovered from le Juste, a vessel sunk during the Battleof the Cardinals in 1759.

From the vantage pointof the Belvédère du Val, the view towards the meandering marshlands bordering the Vilaine is nothing shortof spectacular. A narrow path runs along the banks of the river.

The Pont of Cran near Saint-Dolay offers a unique perspective onthe Vilaine and the surroundingmarshland meadows.

FLOWERED SITES

Le Guerno, La Roche-Bernard and Nivillac have been classed as «three fl owers» site in the nationwide «Towns and Villages in Bloom» com-petition (Concours de Villes et Vil-lages fl euris), a quality label issued in recognition of particular care taken to develop and sustain a «green» tra-dition for the benefi t of inhabitants and visitors alike.

REMARKABLE TREES

In order to protect Brittany natural heritage, associations as well as indi-viduals and professionals dedicated to tree and lumber careers have de-cided in 2007 to engage themselves in a campaign to protect and de-velop the tree in Brittany. The «Re-markable Trees in Britain» campaign is part of an educational approach to the environment and sustainable development. The General Council of Morbihan conducted an inventory and published a book «Remarkable Trees in Morbihan.» Our territory counts several «remarkable trees»:

• Le Guerno - in the wildlife and bo-tanic park of Branféré: 1 Beech, 1 English Oak, 2 Redwood Sequoias and 1 Oriental Plane Tree listed as «Remarkable Trees of France».

• Muzillac - The Chapel of Moustéro:1 Monterey Cypress and nearly Sé-réac Castle (private owner): 1 Yew and 1 Cedar of Lebanon.

• Nivillac - Domaine de Bodeuc (pri-vate owner): 1 Beech, 1 Holm Oak and 1 Giant Sequoia.

• Saint Dolay - in Drezeul (private owner): 1 Chesnut Tree.

THE COSCA AND MICHOCHÈNE BOTANICAL TRAILSIN ARZAL AND NOYAL-MUZILLAC

These two botanical trails have been entirely restored in 2013. Play with the two heroes Flore and Robin on the 50 pannels written and created by the CPIE Brocé-liande forest (French associations for Environment). The pages of a fantasy notebook are exposed. On

the menu: botany, ecology but also local anecdotes and little games. The local environment species are presented (in French only).
