3. ASTRONOMICAL ROUTE: PARANAL OBSERVATORY (AGENCY: ANTILHUE
TOURS)
We head south of Antofagasta to visit the world’s most powerful optical observatory, the VLT, also
known as Paranal Observatory. Here we will observe the technology and facilities used to study the
cosmos. On our way back, we will stop at the Hand of the Desert, an incredible sculpture in the
middle of the desert.

4. ASTRONOMICAL ROUTE: ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY TOUR (AGENCY:
ATACAMA DESERT CROSSING + CHANGO TOURS)
In this spectacular 4x4 vehicle, we will visit the landmark Hand of the Desert sculpture, 11 metres in
height, which is located 75km south of the city. This sculpture is part of an area classified as an
International Starlight Tourism destination for its average of 320 clear days a year and other
characteristics that we will discuss during the tour.
For those who are interested, we will give an introduction to photography using manual modes, to
get to know and understand techniques for taking fun photos at night. We will take group and
individual photos.

Given the importance of the Port of Antofagasta to the macro northern zone of Chile, Antofagasta

geographical highlights. We will get to know the town of San Pedro and other nearby areas,
