Sent straight to the front by Tom O’Brien, the five-year-old set a steady early pace and gradually wound up the tempo. The favourite, Rathhill (Getaway), was never able to get on terms and finished a well-beaten fourth, as the winner’s nearest challengers in the closing stages were the Paul Nicholls pair of Grand Sancy (Diamond Boy) and Southfield Stone (Fair Mix). Tizzard said: “He has toughed that out again today. Going from the front like that, you have got to be tough. He jumps his hurdles and is away from them so fast. If we held him up I don’t know whether he could do that. He has surprised us, as he is not that brilliant at home. We’ve had him for four runs, three wins and a second, and he is just a very nice horse. “I wouldn’t think there is any chance of him running between now and Cheltenham [Gr.1 Supreme Novices’ Hurdle], as he has had a tough old race today. It would be nice to save him for the three festivals later on.” Bred by Tangi Saliou and Mme Jocelyne Ventrou, Elixir De Nutz is the fourth top-flight winner for his sire Al Namix, following Petit Mouchoir, Saphir Du Rheu and Grandouet. TOUGH NUTZ LANDS TOLWORTH HURDLEYesterday’s racing highlight was the Gr.1 Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown Park, a race won in the last three years by Yorkhill, Finian’s Oscar and Summerville Boy, who all went on to add further Gr.1 victories during that respective season.

Laurina is a half-sister to the dual Listed-winning hurdler Lamigo (American Post), out of the winning German mare Lamboghina (Alkalde). The second dam, Landina (Pentathlon), is a winning half-sister to the German Listed hurdles winner Landrino (Navarino), the Listed Flat winner Landsuitor (Local Suitor) and to the dam of the Listed Norsk Derby winner Lorofino (Orofino).

LAURINA STILL ON COURSE FOR CHELTENHAMTwo non-runners left April’s Fairyhouse Gr.1 winner Laurina with just one rival in Sandown Park’s Listed Unibet Mares’ Hurdle over 2m4f. Her opponent, Sensulano (Milan), had won her last two starts, at Ascot and Cheltenham, but was never travelling on the testing ground and struggled to even make a match of the contest. Laurina, however, was barely out of second gear throughout and sauntered to a 48-length success, taking her unbeaten record to five since moving from her native France to Willie Mulllins’s yard.

Mullins commented: “Ruby [Walsh] said she was very good. Every time he took a pull she wanted to go faster and faster, and he said he never really got going. Going to Cheltenham is the plan. We’ll see whether we get another race into her in between. It’s not important, giving her another run.

“A winner is a winner and I’m very happy with that. It was her first run back and the ground up the straight was very testing. I saw the four-year-olds, some fit four-year-olds, and they were out on their feet. Obviously we would have liked more competition, but winning races is what it is all about.”

Laurina, who holds three entries for the opening day at the Cheltenham Festival, though the Gr.1 Champion Hurdle seems to be her principal target, was bred by Alain Clavier and Roger-Yves and Nicolas Simon, and is a dual graduate of the Osarus sales ring. She is by the El Prado stallion Spanish Moon, winner of the Gr.1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Gr.2 Prix Foy, who will be standing this spring at Haras d’Annebault at a fee of €5,000.

FLYER AND DOYEN DO BATTLE AT NAASIf the market is to be believed, today’s Gr.1 Lawlor’s of Naas Novice Hurdle looks a virtual match between the Willie Mullins-trained Tornado Flyer (Flemensfirth) and Gordon Elliott’s unbeaten Battleoverdoyen (Doyen).

The former won two of his three bumpers, including April’s Gr.1 Racing Post INH Flat Race at Punchestown, having previously finished third in Cheltenham’s Gr.1 Weatherbys Champion Bumper, and started his hurdling career with a comfortable maiden hurdle victory at Punchestown on 9th December. Battleoverdoyen has a point-to-point victory under his belt, along with a bumper success at Punchestown in November and an impressive 13-length win in a maiden hurdle at Navan on 16th December.

Mullins also saddles two of the seven other contenders, namely the 17-length Cork maiden hurdle winner Come To Me (Spanish Moon) and the dual winner and Gr.2 runner-up Getareason (Getaway), while Elliott also runs Commander Of Fleet (Fame And Glory), unbeaten in two starts under Rules until his fourth of four in last month’s Gr.1 Royal Bond Novice Hurdle.

Of the others, Lone Wolf (Gold Well) was Listed-placed in a Punchestown hurdle last February before breaking his maiden over obstacles last time out at Fairyhouse and First Approach (Robin Des Champs) was a close fourth at Gr.3 level in November. Magnium (Westerner) was second in that race, but has since been beaten much further by the winner at Gr.2 level, and Sams Profile (Black Sam Bellamy) was second in a Cork Gr.3 on 9th December.

The first-known foal by Silvery Moon, a filly, arrived in Germany on Friday night. Out of the Tobiano mare Colina, she has already been named Colory Moon.

Her sire, a coloured son of I Was Framed, was trained by Mario Hofer and won five races and was Listed-placed at Cologne before performing well in the show ring and retiring to Marbach Stud in Germany.

Contenders in the Steeplechase category were all born in Europe. The British-bred Zanjabeel (Aussie Rules) landed a pair of Gr.1 events in 2018, while the French-bred Optimus Prime (Deportivo) was a Gr.1 winner in August. However, he was only third in the Gr.1 Lonsome Glory Handicap Hurdle behind Zanjabeel the following month. The final contender is Gordon Elliott’s Irish-bred Jury Duty (Well Chosen), winner of the Gr.1 Grand National Hurdle in October.

The unbeaten Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Game Winner (Candy Ride), Gr.1 Cash Call Futurity winner Improbable (City Zip) and Gr.1 Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity winner Knicks Go (Paynter) are the finalists for Two-Year-Old Male, while Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Jaywalk (Cross Traffic), dual Gr.1 winner Bellafina (Quality Road) and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Newspaperofrecord (Lope De Vega) are the juvenile filly finalists.

The human categories include all of Justify’s connections: the ownership partnership, trainer Bob Baffert, jockey Mike Smith, and breeder John Gunther. The ownership division also features Peter Brant and Hronis Racing, while Chad Brown and Steve Asmussen are Baffert’s opposition. John Gunther, who along with daughter Tanya, experienced a remarkable season, is up against Accelerate’s breeder Mike Abraham and WinStar Farm. Irad Ortiz Jnr and Jose Ortiz, last year’s Eclipse Champion, are against Mike Smith for the jockey award.

The Horse of the Year award will be decided between Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy), Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Classic hero Accelerate (Lookin At Lucky), who landed four other Gr.1s last term, and last season’s five-time Gr.1 winner Monomoy Girl (Tapizar).

The NTRA, Daily Racing Form and National Turf Writers and Broadcasters have announced the three final Horse of the Year candidates, as well as finalists for the other 11 equine divisional awards and five human awards.

In their respective divisions. Accelerate is a finalist for older dirt male, along with Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner City Of Light (Quality Road) and Gr.1 Pegasus World Cup winner Gun Runner (Candy Ride). Justify is a finalist for three-year-old male, along with turf and dirt Gr.1 winner Catholic Boy (More Than Ready) and dual Gr.1 victor McKinzie (Street Sense), while Monomoy Girl’s challengers for the three-year-old filly award are Gr.1 Cotillion Stakes winner Midnight Bisou (Midnight Lute) and the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes victrix Rushing Fall (More Than Ready).

All three contenders in the Female Turf Horse category were born in Europe. Breeders’ Cup winners Enable (Nathaniel) and Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie) are up against A Raving Beauty (Mastercraftsman), a dual North American Gr.1 winner, but who was only third to Sistercharlie in the Gr.1 Filly and Mare Turf.

In the Male Turf Horse category, Stormy Liberal (Stormy Atlantic), also a finalist in the Male Sprinter division, landed back-to-back wins in the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, is up against a pair of European breds. He is up against Expert Eye (Acclamation),

LEADING NATIONAL HUNT HORSES OF 2018 ANNOUNCEDThe French handicappers have announced the final ratings for the National Hunt sphere of 2018 and star mare De Bon Coeur stole the show. The six-year-old daughter of Vision D’Etat, owned and bred by Jacques Detre and Haras de Saint-Voir, and the leading four-year-old hurdler the previous year, won the Gr.1 Grande Course d’Haies in May by 16 lengths, but has been unsighted since, was awarded a rating of 86kg. That rating is the best in the past ten years by upwards of three kilograms. Second in the standings is Alex De Larredya on 83kg. The son of Crillon defeated the high-weight in April’s Gr.2 Prix Leon Rambaud, the only time the mare has been defeated when completing a race. Black Sam Bellamy’s son Galop Marin, who dominated the scene without the aforementioned pair and took the Gr.1 Grand Prix d’Autome in November by 15 lengths, sits on 82kg.

Detre also part owns the high-weight chaser Bipolaire (Fragrant Mix), whose victory in November’s Gr.1 Prix La Haye Jousselin was rewarded with a rating of 83kg, the same achieved last year when he topped the same category. Sitting on 82.5kg is On The Go, the son of Kamsin, who took May’s Gr.1 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris, a contest Bipolaire fell at the first. Rounding out the top three is Saint Goustan Blue (Blue Bresil), who was runner-up when attempting to make all in the Prix La Haye Jousselin and was defeated by three lengths. That was the first time the seven-year-old had run over a distance further than 4400m.

Last autumn was the deciding factor in establishing the leader amongst the four-year-old hurdlers. Master Dino (Doctor Dino), who runs at Plumpton this afternoon in one of the best novice chases the Sussex track will have held, and Tunis (Estejo), who is now based at Haras de Cercy, met a total of eight times in 2018 and the eight length defeat the former gave to the latter in November’s Gr.1 Prix Renaud du Vivier was the deciding factor. Master Dino ended the year on 78kg with Tunis on 74kg. Wildriver was awarded a mark of 73kg for her Gr.1 Prix Alain du Breuil victory in May. That day the daughter of Willywell had Tunis a length and a half behind, with Master Dino another two and a half lengths away. However, she has not run since.

The best three-year-old hurdler the previous year, Whetstone was sent chasing last year and was by the best. Her rating of 80kg, awarded for her 16 length victory in May’s Gr.1 Prix Ferdinand Dufaure, is by far the best in the past ten years. The daughter of Saint Des Saints, unbeaten in five chase starts, is rated three kilograms ahead of subsequent Gr.1 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run at the same stage of their careers. Sitting in second of the division is Cat Tiger (Diamond Boy) on 73kg for his Gr.3 Prix Morgex victory in November. He has since been transferred to Britain. Epi Sacre (Secret Singer) was second in November’s Gr.1 Prix Maurice Gillois, but last of seven in the Morgex, sits on a rating of 71kg.

Beaumec De Houelle, a son of Martaline, who has already been announced as standing at Haras de Montaigu in 2020, heads the leading three-year-old hurdlers on 72kg. He is the first entire to be awarded the accolade in the past ten years and won five of his six starts, including the Gr.1 Prix Cambaceres in

Lady In Black gave plenty of cheek inside the final furlong, Oh Susanna had enough in hand to score by a cosy half a length from her old adversary, who had also chased her home in 2017.

This victory, a fourth at the top level and fifth overall, should have the Champion primed for the Gr.1 Met in three weeks’ time, when she will attempt to repeat her success of 2017 and add to her already impressive earnings of just over R5-million.

Bred in Australia and by the same sire as wonder mare Winx, Oh Susanna is a half-sister to the Canadian Gr.2-placed Indiano Jones (A P Indy). Her dam Sharp Susan, a Gr.2 and Gr.3 winner in the States and third in Belmont’s Gr.1 Garden City Stakes, is a Touch Gold half-sister to the Gr.1 Donn Handicap hero Spring At Last (Silver Deputy) and to Sharp Lisa (Dixieland Band), who captured the Gr.1 Las Virgines Stakes and has produced Gr.3 Bahrain Trophy winner and Gr.1 St Leger third Housesofparliament (Galileo). The grandam Winter’s Gone (Dynaformer) failed to win, but is a half-sister to the multiple Gr.1 winner Bien Bien (Manila).

Eagle, who was bidding for a fourth successive victory in this internationally-acclaimed mile event.

The recent Gr.1 Cape Guineas hero Soqrat, the sole Classic contender in the line-up, took the lead approaching the final furlong and looked set to become the first sophomore winner since Gimmethegreenlight triumphed in 2012. However, Do It Again was in hot pursuit and in a pulsating finish, the big-striding four-year-old overhauled his gallant rival in the shadow of the post. Wide out, the favourite Rainbow Bridge came home strongly for third.

The victory completed a memorable Gr.1 double for trainer Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie, who also teamed up with Oh Susanna in the preceding Paddock Stakes.

Do It Again, who had signed off on his sophomore season with a fine score in the Gr.1 Durban July, came into the race off a four-year-old debut which saw him finish third, beaten two short heads, in the Green Point Stakes won by Legal Eagle.

From the first crop of Klawervlei-based Twice Over, he is out of the dual Gr.3 winner Sweet Virginia (Casey Tibbs). In addition to Do It Again, she is the dam of Hong Kong Gr.3 winner Horse Of Fortune (Stronghold), as well as the Gr.3 Winter Guineas third Vilakazi (Visionaire).
