Communicating with Idioms

All cultures develop idioms. You probably say and write them all the time without realizing it.

However, these phrases are very confusing to a person who is beginning to learn English.

Imagine you are talking to a friend from another country and you make the following statements. Why might these statements confuse your friend?

“I’ll pick you up at noon.”

“You should come over my house.”

“The jury is still out about whether or not we’ll go on a field trip.

“I’ve been running on empty since I got up this morning.”

“I can see right through you.”

Tips on Writing a News Article

Make your headline dramatic so your audience will want to continue reading.

The lead should contain a summary of the who, what, where, when, why and how information.

Report facts. Do not include your opinion in the article; however, you may quote the opinions of other people as part of the story.

The information in the body should give details that support the basic information stated in the lead. More facts, statistics, and quotations are examples of the kinds of information to include in the body.

Identify your audience. A speech can be informative, persuasive, entertaining, or a little of each. What should Cole’s speech be? A speech contains three sections:

The introduction is the beginning of the speech. It must catch the audience’s attention. Reciting a quote, asking a question, telling a funny story, or presenting an amazing fact or statistic, are all great ways to start a speech.

The body is the middle and main part of the speech. Here you develop your main ideas – ideas that contribute to the topic of your speech. Supporting details for each idea must also be stated here.

The conclusion, the end of the speech, is sometimes the only part the audience remembers. Make it strong, clear, and memorable.
