The clarion October 2017 Touching lives with compassion, understanding and hope HONORED TO BE A PART … Are you honored to be part of building God’s Kingdom through Canfield Christian Church? Do you have visions for our future growth with additional opportunities to strengthen your faith and lead others to experiencing who we are as a dynamic community of faith? Then you are encouraged to participate in our stewardship emphasis: Honored To Be A Part. I am convinced that regularly discussing and practicing generous financial giving is part of our Christian commitments. And why? Because I believe in tithing and have seen the power of financial giving. The power of giving inspires and provides hope. This power of giving includes providing for our church operational expenses as well as supporting outreach initiatives. We understand our responsibility to give generously and regularly. And yet, conversations about pledge cards or financial commitments make us uncomfortable --- but they shouldn’t. Could it be that our resistance to talking about money in church concerns knowing the cost of receiving all that our church offers? Could it be that we are uncomfortable about securing the dollars needed for what we desire in additional programs and continued growth? Our visions require your financial commitments along with enthusiastically giving your time. What we are accomplishing - together - is outstanding! As we continue moving forward, you are invited to provide an estimate of your financial pledge to support God’s work through Canfield Christian Church. As you accept this invitation please consider the following: Increasing your giving by at least 3% -- or a percentage that seems right for you. Being one of our families who will increase their annual giving by $2,000; or Being one of our families who will increase their annual giving by $1,000. A giving brochure and pledge card is enclosed with this Clarion Newsletter. Completing and returning the pledge card serves two purposes: It expresses your commitment to provide generous financial resources for the important work accomplished through Canfield Christian Church. It informs us of your financial commitment, and assists us in managing our budget. Please return your completed pledge card on Pledge Sunday, 15 October, or mail it to Ed Allen. How you give from your financial resources, and how you include your church in your estate giving is crucial to the ongoing health and mission of Canfield Christian Church. Please continue praying for God's work through you and for your significant role in financially supporting all we are accomplishing as Canfield Christian Church. May your prayers cause you to understand how important you are in what we are accomplishing by serving together.

HONORED TO BE A PART …

Are you honored to be part of building God’s Kingdom through Canfield Christian Church? Do you have visions for our future growth with additional opportunities to strengthen your faith and lead others to experiencing who we are as a dynamic community of faith? Then you are encouraged to participate in our stewardship emphasis: Honored To Be A Part. Coffee Fellowship – The host families for our Sunday morning coffee fellowship provide an invaluable service to each of us – Thank You. Thank you, Sally Payne, for agreeing to serve as our hostess for September. Thank you, Jan Pumphrey and Mary Anne Kimble, for agreeing to serve as our hostesses for October.

Update on Search for Settled Minister

The committee is in touch with Steve Bentley at the Regional office to help us find a qualified and suitable candidate in our area who will join with us going forward. Our recent call to a settled pastor was mutually declined. We are positive that we will find the person God is preparing for us and ask for your prayers that we may discern that person when we meet him/her. Ed, our intentional interim pastor, has generously agreed to continue his ministry with us until a new candidate becomes our settled minister. It is important to remember that the minister is NOT the church. All of us are the body of Christ and as such, we shall support and love each other now and when we call a settled pastor.

Respectfully, Alan, Ashley, Helen, Martin, Patty, Laurie and Sally

Richard Rees - Marines

Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to doand they will surprise you with their ingenuity.

George S. Patton

Richard Rees August 1, 1927 September 8, 2017

We are honored to have been blessed by Richard Rees’ faith inspired commitments of service to Canfield Christian Church and to our great country. These enduring commitments define Richard’s legacy. While reflecting on Richard’s life, we remain grateful for the numerous ways Richard Rees touched our lives through his friendship and his example for living. As we extend our thanksgiving for the life he shared with us, we offer our prayers and support to his family and circle of friends so that their faith will guide them following the 7 September 2017 loss of Richard’s earthly presence. May God’s presence and His peace bless and comfort each life Richard touched and how you also touched Richard’s life with supportive compassion, understanding, and hope. Semper Fi and rest in God’s loving care.

FOOD – FUN – ENERGY – LEADERSHIP - AND SOLIDLY DEDICATED PEOPLE

So how did our 2nd annual Back To School Block Party come together? What did it look like? Good questions that accompany appreciating the tremendous people of Canfield Christian Church. The word on the street (in the pews?) is that every person our Event Coordinator, Brenda Hernan, asked to help – responded with a resounding … “Pleased to do what I can!” And you followed through with enthusiasm. Many thanks to each one of you. We served together and graciously welcomed the numerous people benefitting from our appreciation for our neighbors and community visitors. Please enjoy the pictures that present a small glimpse of Canfield Christian Church’s gift of hospitality to our community. As you reflect on the day, remember how our personal investments in the block party and raffles supported local community mission initiatives for children.

THANK YOU – EVERYONE!

15 October Stewardship Sunday

The Joy of Generous Living Text: Psalm 24: 1-5 & Mark 12: 28-34

The joy of generous living is greater than giving from our financial resources – it takes into consideration all that we are and how we respond to God’s many blessings – the blessings we sing about with “Count your many blessings, name them one by one … count your many blessings, see what God has done!” As people of faith, we present all that we are and all that we can be to be used for the Glory of God. Today we will consider how it is that we accept opportunities to experience the joy of generous living in our personal lives and our Christian witness as a community of faith.

22 October The Truth Shall Make You Free

Text: Mark 1: 29-42 Today we begin a series of two messages on striving to rediscover a basis for meaning in our life. Why do we do so? Because so many lives are empty, hallow, cynical and without purpose or clear direction. Far too many people are overlooking the joy of life. We will address the question: “How can life take on exciting meaning?” We will consider that the meaning in life begins when we link ourselves to something so great; so compelling; and so full of joy, and love, and compassion, that somehow we become infected by this excitement.

29 October

Elisha – People Who Love People Text: II Kings 4: 8-37

We conclude our current emphasis on meaning in life by turning to the Prophet Elisha. How often do you picture an Old Testament Prophet as delivering God’s disappointment and judgment? Well, that is not what we discover in our text for today. We will look at what we can learn from Elisha’s compassion for his people and often times for the people who disagreed with him. We will discover how Elisha’s love for others, and offering himself to them as a friend, is an example for meaning in our lives.
