School contributions are voluntary and are a matter of choice for parents. There is no charge for students to complete the minimum requirements of the school curriculum. All schools can ask for voluntary contributions from parents to enhancethe educational programs they are providing. The level of voluntary contributions is determined by the principal in consultation with the school community. Our P&C have endorsed the school fees we have set for this year. Confidentiality, privacy and dignity is always maintained in relation to voluntary contributions. Schools may charge for elective subjects. The principal determines the level of subject contributions in consultation with the school community as part of the school budgetary process. Professional Learning This week, Mrs Baker has completed an intensive two-day training in MacqLit. MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program for small groups of older low-progress readers. It provides teachers with a comprehensive sequence of lessons that includes all the key components necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Ideal for students who have particular difficulties in the area of word recognition Specifically aimed at struggling readers in Year 3 through to high school Delivered by teachers, learning support teachers, special educators, and well-trained and well-supported teacher aides HSC Minimum Standard 2020 is the first year students need to meet a minimum standard of literacy and numeracy to receive their HSC credential. NESA has increased the number of times students can sit the minimum standard tests, in response to feedback from stakeholders. Students will have up to four times per year to sit each minimum standard reading, writing or numeracy test, providing increased flexibility for schools and more opportunities for students to demonstrate they have met the standard. Students can take the tests from Year 10 until up to five years after starting their first HSC course. At least 30 calendar days is required before re-attempting a test in the same domain. Provisions for the minimum standard tests are available for some students with disability. Some students with disability studying Life Skills courses may be exempt from meeting the minimum standard to receive their HSC credential. Home School Liaison Visit Today, our Home School Liaison Officers visited our school to check on our student attendance. They are generally very impressed with student attendance this year. Their only request is that parents / caregivers remember to explain absences with a note or phone call to the school. School piano Our school piano is for sale. We have upgraded to a brand new electronic organ. Mrs Baldwinson is beside herself with excitement and we cant wait to put it into action. Further details are provided on page 3 of this newsletter regarding the expression of interest process. Assembly Due to the beautiful rain we are receiving, we have decided to cancel tomorrows assembly. Amanda Thorpe, Principal

Tottenham Central School Principal: Amanda Thorpe Week 6, Term 1 Thursday, 5 March 2020

Principal’s message Voluntary School Contributions 2020 The 2020 Voluntary School fees are included in this newsletter. School contributions are voluntary and are a matter of choice for parents. There is no charge for students to complete the minimum requirements of the school curriculum. All schools can ask for voluntary contributions from parents to ‘enhance’ the educational programs they are providing. The level of voluntary contributions is determined by the principal in consultation with the school community. Our P&C have endorsed the school fees we have set for this year. Confidentiality, privacy and dignity is always maintained in relation to voluntary contributions. Schools may charge for elective subjects. Book Club Book club order forms have been distributed and are due back to school Friday, March 20. Any cheques should be made payable to Tottenham Central School. Thank you. Expression of interest The school has recently purchased a new digital piano. Expressions of interest are being called for the purchase and removal of the old ‘Symphony’ piano, which still has many years of music to be played upon it. It requires some TLC and a tune, but would be perfect for a beginner family. It is quite heavy and will need 3 or 4 men to move without exertion. If you would like to rehome our ‘Symphony’ please contact Miss Thorpe at school with your offer before Friday, March 13.

Art news This term, Stage 4 are studying a unit called ‘Desert Weavers’ that will focus on the Tjanpi women weavers of Central Australia. They have created visual stories using traditional Aboriginal symbols and contemporary colours, and are planning 3D sculptures of Australian animals constructed from paper, wire and wool. Stage 5 are studying a unit called ‘Van Gogh & Beyond’. They have used van Gogh’s impasto technique and monochrome colour scheme to create textured sunflowers. They are now working on a WebQuest on Vincent van Gogh, and planning a major artwork inspired by his art practice and techniques. Ag news The rain has enabled the students to assist Will in finishing off our irrigation system by digging holes and connecting pipes to the main pipeline. This will mean we will be able to utilise the water in our dam and encourage pasture growth. Our Hy-line chooks have grown over the holidays and are close to point-of-lay. Weekly weighing of both the chooks and the feed they consume is conducted and recorded for our entry in the Royal Easter Show layer competition. Regular cleaning of the water troughs and collecting eggs are also carried out. Will’s composting bay is working well, turning garden waste into composted dirt ready to be spread on the school gardens. The boys take turns regularly moving the compost from one bay to the other and are close to starting with a new round of garden waste. The Year 10 students have also been encouraging the Year 9 students to gain confidence operating the equipment safely and packing them away correctly. During theory lessons this term, they will be setting up experiments to test how abiotic factors affect plant growth.

ANY DONATIONS OF COW MANURE OR FEED WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Sports news

RYDA day Yesterday, our Stage 6 students participated in the RYDA Day at Dubbo. This is a Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program which involved the students participating in a variety of activities related to driving. Some of the sessions included watching how long it takes a car to actually stop when it brakes doing 40km/h, 60km/h and 80km/h. The students were also given sessions by driving instructors who talked about the importance of road safety and being aware of their surroundings. Secondary Squash Secondary students will be walking to the squash courts the next two Tuesdays during PE to practice for their upcoming CHS squash games. CHS Boys Tennis This year we have entered both boys and girls in the CHS tennis knockout. The boys will be playing their games at Gilgandra next Wednesday, March 11.

Regards, Kathryn Klante Canteen Manager 0401305002 Fete 2020 update At the P&C meeting on Monday March 2, we all considered the rain that the district has received, what is forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of this week, and in turn how busy our farming sector will be and the focus many of our families will have considering this might be the wettest start to the year in a few years. For these reasons, we have decided to keep the fete in the latter half of the year, probably term 3. So we hope that this will give everyone plenty of time to pot some plants, pull out some white elephant items and let us know of any ideas that you might have to contribute to this years event. In the meantime feel free to contact Nicole 0429 873 070 or [email protected]
