Dear Editor,My name is Louise Palmer, I wonder if you could help me please? Mybrother Ian Davenport lived in Kenmare in the 90's, he died aged 24 inJune 1993 of a heart attack. The reason I am contacting you is because Ian(later changed his name to Yan) campaigned to save an old tree in thetown from being cut down, he climbed the tree and was apparentlyinterviewed by the local papers and a picture was printed of him up thetree. I have never seen this photo, and I am no longer in contact with myfamily and have no way of finding this photo. Is there anyway you canhelp me to track down this photograph please? In anticipation of your reply, thank you.Louise [email protected] Bassnage road, Halesowen, West Midlands, B63 4EX

Whatever diet we may have embarked on, and despite our hardest efforts, many of us find it difficult to shift those last few pounds. You may haverestricted your calories, and have been exercising regularly, but yourweight doesn’t shift in the way that it should. There are a number of thingsthat could be contributing to this and one of them is that your body isaggravated by a certain food or foods that you are eating. Recent researchpublished in Obesity & Weight loss Therapy has suggested a directrelationship between food intolerance -the presence of food-specific IgGantibodies in your blood- and weight gain. This means that by simplycutting out your particular trigger foods from your diet your battle of thebulge could be over.We know that there are other factors that contribute to weight loss apart

from food intolerance; however, it is clear that food intolerance, togetherwith food input, and energy output, all contribute to energy balance in thebody. The digestive system needs to process and deliver nutrients to thewhole body. A stressed digestive system, trying to cope with foodintolerances, is less able to process energy and nutrients for the rest of thebody. More than 70% of the body’s immune system is in the gut and oncethe immune response is triggered in the body -as shown by the raised IgGlevels- the body feels that it is under siege thus hoarding supplies, storingfluid and increasing weight.Various types of intolerances are likely to cause weight gain. Every

individual person is unique with a different biochemical make-up, even toothers with similar conditions. It is usually a combination of food types, and not just one type of food that causes the problems. On average peoplewith food intolerances show reactivity to six different foods. It is thereforevirtually impossible to identify which types of intolerances are importantwithout conducting a test. Identifying your intolerances can improve youroverall health. The symptoms of food intolerance can be many and varied. They include digestive problems, bloating, IBS, migraines, headaches, low mood, fatigue, skin rashes and eczema. It has been shown thatremoval of foods from the diet that the body is reacting to in this way canreduce the range of ill health symptoms caused by food intolerance andalso, help you lose weight.Food intolerance testing provides invaluable information about what is

actually going on in your body so that you can start changing your diet tosuit you. McSweeney Pharmacy has a high quality laboratory based foodintolerance test available as part of our service. The only thing required isa few pin pricks of blood taken from the fingertip.

This month we are running a special competition. Send an emailmentioning ‘FIT’, followed by your name and mobile number [email protected] and be in with a chance to win a free Lorisian FoodIntolerance Test worth €250 ! Competition is open until October 5th2013.

If you want to know more about food intolerance and its impact on weightgain and on other symptoms as mentioned above drop into McSweeneyPharmacy Kenmare or contact us on 064 6679880. We will be more thanhappy to answer any queries you may have.

National Ambulance Service presentation to public representatives‘flawed’.A presentation in Killarney recently to public representatives bythe head of the National Ambulance Service, Mr Martin Dunne was shownto contain many flaws. It can only be described as a presentation toSenators, TD’s and Councillors that was designed to cover up thereduction of ambulance services to the people of Kerry. GP’s and themedical professionals in Kerry are expressing serious concerns to meabout the proposed reduction of the ambulance service – which if it goesahead, will mean that the people of Kerry’s lives will most certainly be putat risk. I am concerned that this is going to be a case of ‘death bygeography’ as proposed cuts to the Killarney Service will have an effecton Kenmare. The loss of one of the 2 emergency ambulances in Killarneywill have a knock on effect. I have called for a second meeting within amonth where all doctors and members of the communities affected wouldbe invited to be present to have their serious concerns heard and questionsanswered. Congratulations to the hard working SOAK committee whohave done so much to retain the ambulance for the Kenmare area.Seanad ReferendumPower Grab by Ministers. The government havepromised reform, if theywere truly serious aboutreform they would havecarried out the reform sincethey came to power. Do wereally trust minster to givepower to backbench andopposition TD's ? On The4th of October a referendum will be held on the future of Seanad Eireann.I would urge you to vote No to abolition, a second house is vital to ourdemocracy to scrutinise laws before Ministers can sign them in. 500amendments were made to laws by the current Seanad, there is noproposal to fill this gap in reviewing legislation.

Huge Congratulations toeveryone involved inrecent ‘Tidy Towns’ win. There is rightly a greatsense of pride in Kenmareat the significantachievement of beingnamed overall Ireland’sTidiest Small Town in thisyear’s Tidy Towns Competition. I am thrilled for all involved in the TidyTown’s Committee and it is just recognition for all the hard workinvolved. The sense of pride and community spirit that the competitionengenders is incredible and it has helped improve the image of towns upand down the country. I know there is a huge community involvementthroughout the year in order to keep the town in excellent condition. Iwant to congratulate all those involved in the Tidy Towns Committee,Noel Crowley, the Community Employment Scheme and Kerry CountyCouncil, also all the volunteers who give up their spare time in order tohelp improve the community around them. I would also like tocongratulate the other gold medal winners; Killarney, Listowel and Tralee.Kenmare Gangs of New York Festival. Congratulations to JerryO'Sullivan the chairman and all the committee associated with of theKenmare 'Gangs of New York' Festival. The entire festival was a hugesuccess, with a number of descendants of those who were sent by theLansdowne estate to the five points are in New York making the journeyback to Kenmare for the event.Ard Bhearna EstatePetition. On behalf of theResidents of the ArdBhearna estate, on whoseresidence committee I am amember I have sent apetition signed by the 59children living in the estateto the NRA and the CountyManager, protesting the lack of footpaths and lighting into town. The NRAhave said that the time they walk home from school is when most roadcasualties occur. We are calling for the allocation of resources to have thisdangerous situation rectified.

Being somewhat old fashioned in myviews I must say that there wassomething comforting about the formatof the black and white Kenmare News. However times or tides wait for no man,so we go forward into a new era of glossand colour with great expectations. Allcredit to Dick our editor and his assistantthe long suffering Kate, good luck andbest wishes in your new endeavour.

A couple of days ago Michael J O'Connordrove over from Killarney to purchase sometrout flies for Autumn flies for Autumn fishingon the Killarney Lakes. He brought his daughterwith him for company and he informed me thatthey intended to have lunch in the Sneem Hotel. Also, though there are excellent butchers inKillarney and Kenmare, he was partial to a nicepiece of roasting pork for his Sunday dinner, hewas golfing to buy some rib roast to bring backhome.

Michael J's car is 26 years old and, askinghim how it was running, he told me it had justpassed its NCT. He took it to a garage for ageneral service before the test and they told himthat if all the cars they serviced were as good ashis mechanically they would have gone out ofbusiness long ago. He also told me that he had

another daughter married in Glengarriff and thathe goes over there now and then for a spot ofmackerel fishing. At this point in my story youare saying to yourself what is so extraordinaryabout this Michael J O'Connor? Well, I will tellyou Michael J and as he said himself 'Godwilling' will be one hundred years old thisOctober. On being asked what was his specialrecipe

for longlife, his response was moderation ineverything you do not have to be a monk butdefinitely do not be a rake. I know that you, likeme, hope that Michael J's search for killerAutumn flies and nice roast pork continues formany years to come.

On the subject of trout flies I rememberfishing in a competition on the Corrib Lake andthis angler had silver foil wrapped around hiscast to cover his flies from prying eyes. I knewthat he was a very good fisherman but it did notseem like the best of manners to me. I alsohad a bad experience in Lough Arrow. A year oftwo previously this person had tied up somecream, coloured trout flys and given me two ofthem. On a practice day on Lough Arrow Ifished one of them with great success, catchingseveral fine trout. The person I am telling youabout and his brother, who incidentally was agood friend of mine, were staying in a roomclose to mine in the local hotel. The brother whoI will call Dick, asked me to call to their roomand he would accompany me down for dinnerwhich I did.

On entering the room the person, who shallremain nameless, asked about the trout and whatI had caught them on. I told him it was the flies Ireceived from himself, he said he could notremember giving me any flies. His fly boxes

were on his bed and I moved towards themwith the voiced intention of checking to see if hehad a similar fly and showing it to him.His whole persona changed in an instant and hishands were locked around my throat. It was allso unexpected that I was caught off my guard. Icould not breath and, lashing out at him washaving no effect. Luckily for me Dick grabbedhim from behind and forced him away.Did I get a fright? You can be sure, I left theroom on Dicks advice pretty quickly. Dickcaught up with me in the bar (I needed awhiskey) and apologised for his brothersbehaviour. He told me that the brother wasparanoid over his flies and even Dick himselfwas not allowed to open and look into his flyboxes. If you ask me, after what happened, Iwould say he was mad full stop. There is onething for sure, anytime I saw him after that Istayed as far away as possible from him.

Another thing I have noticed is most anglerswill ask what pattern fly are you catching yourtrout on. I tell them because I have no reason notto, but the funny thing is that they rarely fishwith what you tell them. I have come to theconclusion that they think you are not tellingthem the truth and therefore will not follow youradvice. Another matter is, even if two anglersare fishing the same patterns, one could catchfish the other none, because everybody fisheswith a different action and retrieve. With thosewords of wisdom I will leave you ponder onwhat fly to put on the next time you go fishing.Due to weather conditions the salmon and seatrout fishing is awful. Brown trout fishing ispretty fair. The one bright spot is that the seafishing is wonderful so get out there while youstill have a chance.

Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club had a great season. The youth of the Kenmare area are very lucky to have so many sportingfacilities available to them. These organisations would not exist withoutthe hard work, time and effort that are put in by volunteers. Our first regatta of the year was at Mahoney’s point in Killarney which isthe oldest regatta in the world; here our senior men had the privilege torow alongside local Kerry crews as well as Dublin, Limerick, Oxford andCambridge universities. Our next day out was in Ahakista in West Corkwhere we took part in the novice, U14 and U16 Girls and the junior andsenior men’s races. Junior and senior men took first and second place.Again in Castletownbere our novice girls, U14 boys, junior and seniormen took part with the junior men rowing a hard contested race to takefirst place. The big day in any rowing club is their own regatta and Kenmare’s

came about on the 25th of August 2013. The man above provided us withbeautiful weather and the conditions were perfect for rowing. All this washelped along with the blessing of the boats by Fr. Liam Lovell. A largecrowd gathered to watch clubs from Castletownbere, Flesk Valley,Workmans and Kenmare take to the water on the picturesque KenmareBay. It was great to see so many young people utilising the pier which is afree amenity for everyone to enjoy. Again we took part in the novice andU14 girls and the U14 boys, all rowed well against strong opposition. Ourjunior men once again came first in their race, but the highlight of the daywas the senior men’s race with Kenmare flying home to claim the JackDowning Memorial Cup for the first time in many years. A special word ofthanks must go to our own Wishee Forgerty Dan McCarthy, who had thespectators on the verge of taking to the water themselves with excitementat every race. Kenmare regatta had a first when 3 single skulls glidedacross the calm waters of Kenmare bay. This is the start to a new elementof rowing for Kenmare which we hope will be a great success. Great funwas had in the swimming competition and the duck race with one of ourown local teacher s trying to ruffle ‘Helen’ the duck’s feathers, to the

delight of the children who were watching from the pier.Thank you to all at the start and finish lines, the shore crew, safety

boats, sound system, Kerry County Council and the local Gardaí, whoensure everything, ran without a hitch. For any event parking is a priorityand we were grateful again this year to have the use of the field at the endof the pier.We run the club on a tight rope budget all our funding has been a result

of monies raised through a Lotto grant, membership, bag packing, andchurch gate collections. We would like to take this opportunity to thank allwho have contributed and supported the Club any way, especially Danny& Margaret McCarthy of Star Outdoors. As rowing is one of the oldest traditions in Kenmare we look forward tokeeping it alive for future generations for many years to come.

Kenmare Ambulance Service Secured & Improved. I am delighted thatthe Ambulance in Kenmare is to be retained 24/7 , the current ambulanceservice staff in Kenmare is to increase from 6 up to 10, and the on callsystem has been replaced with full time on duty staff at the Ambulancebase in Kenmare. This was confirmed to us in writing at a meeting onTuesday 3 September. I still have reservations however about dynamicdeployment and will call for a better system to be put in place so that wewill always have a back up ambulance relatively close by in the event thatour own ambulance is engaged. Most Medical Professionals are alsosatisfied with the system introduced in Cahirciveen and Killarney. TheSave our Ambulance Kenmare Committee, Chaired by Michael Hayeswelcomed the news they ran a very measured, rational and professionalcampaign. Thanks to the 8,500 people that signed their petition. Thanksalso to the Ambulance Service, HSE, Minister Jimmy Deenihan TD,Brendan Griffin TD and Politicians from all sides.Kenmare Hospital- Official opening.Minister Reilly should be officiallyopening the New Kenmare Community Hospital Shortly. The FineGael/Labour Government provided in excess of 8 million to build theHospital. I contacted Minister Reilly and my colleague the MinistersPersonal Assistance Cllr Tom O’Leary in relation to the opening.Kenmare Relief Road. The National Roads Authority has indicated toKerry County Council that they are to proceed with completing the firstphase of the Kenmare Eastern Relief Road this year. In 2013 we receivedan allocation of €760,000 over double what was received in the previoustwo years. Hopefully the road will be completed before Christmas.Extra Housing Grants funding. The Housing Department of KerryCounty Council has been constantly in touch with the Department ofEnvironment and gladly additional funding of €109,533 has been securedfor the County, this should clear a lot of the backlog and make up forprevious cuts in funding.Kilgarvan footpath. The footpath near Quills shop and St Garvan’s

Terrace Kilgarvan is to be improved in the next few months; I previouslymade representations in relation to this and other footpaths in the village.Kilgarvan Village resurfacing.Further to my submission the remainder of Kilgarvan Village will becompleted shortly. The appointed Contractors are Arkil and the cost is inthe region of 170,000. The road was on the list for 2014. But thankfullydue to an additional 2 Million allocated to Kerry County Council by mycolleague Minister Leo Varadkar TD, Kilgarvan Village will be completedin 2013. A road closure between 10am and 1.45pm will have to be put inplace for a couple of days between the cross and the junction with theBantry road.Fantastic results in Tidy Towns. The recent results in the Tidy Towns areof huge benefit to our locality. Kenmare won Ireland’s tidiest small town, this is a very difficult task when competing with hundreds of similar townsthroughout the Country. For the last few years we went up a point or twothis year we went up a huge 6 points. Well done also to Kilgarvan which islooking fantastic especially with all the newly painted buildings,Kilgarvan took an endeavour award. Sneem also performed great winninga silver medal and coming top of their grade in Kerry. Thanks especially tothe Tidy Towns Committees, and Volunteers, also businesses, propertyowners, schools, South Kerry Development Partnership and Kerry CountyCouncil who have brought great pride to our community and improved itfor locals and visitors.Agricultural payments advance: a boost for farmers.Minister forAgriculture, Food and the Marine, Simon Coveney TD confirmed thatthere will be an advance under the Single Payment Scheme 2013.Payments at a rate of 50% will be made to applicants from 16 October, with balancing payments being made with effect from 1 December. Cashflow is paramount for Farmers, particularly those on low incomes, and thetiming of these payments is extremely important. I previously raised thisissue with Minister Coveney and Government TDs and gladly it is goingto be implemented. I have also requested that Farm inspectors are moreflexible, currently they are often too draconian.Progress for Macroom by pass. Thanks to a recent High Court decision, the way is now clear for preparatory work including design andcompulsory purchase to proceed. This main Cork to Killarney N22 route isalso of vital access to Kenmare and would be of huge benefit to usespecially in relation to Tourism, Jobs, and people visiting Hospitals etc inCork. The project would include a new 22 Km road and currentconstruction estimates are in the region of 231 Million, which is muchlower that a few years ago. I have asked Kerry County Council to keep inregular contact with Cork County Council about it.Council motion: VAT Rate for Tourism sector. Following on from arequest from the Restaurants Association Ireland I submitted a motionwith Councillors PJ Donovan and John Sheehan, we got Kerry CountyCouncil to call upon the Finance Minister to keep the VAT rate at 9% forTourism providers, hopefully it will be retained.Council motion: Extra Funding for Walks needed:.That Kerry County Council request the Minister for Environment & LocalGovernment Mr Phil Hogan TD to increase funding for walks in RuralAreas in the next allocation of funding. New walks could be introducedand current walking trails could be improved and made safer.Septic tank grants.Almost 32,000 out of 35,000 households haveregistered for Septic tanks in the County. 57 inspections are to take placeKerry this year. Grants will be means tested and where the income is lessthan €50,000 the grant is 80% subject to a maximum of €4000.www.protectourwater.ieKenmare Court House. There are proposals to close the Court Houses inCahirciveen, Dingle, Killorglin and Kenmare and amalgamate them withKillarney and Tralee. The Court Service argue the four proposed forclosure are only used about 10 times a year for judicial functions andmany of them have a low annual case count, I believe we should campaignto retain them as they cost little to run, are an integral part of the judicialsystem in a locality, and would save Gardai, Solicitors, witnesses, defendants etc from having to travel extra distances for cases. AsChairperson of Kerry Joint Policing Committee I will be writing to JusticeMinister Alan Shatter TD and making a submission to the Court ServicesBoard stating the need for their retention.Need for extension of footpath Killarney Road, Kenmare. Further toprevious representations and motions I have again requested that KerryCounty Council find funding to extend the footpath on the Killarney Road,Kenmare as far as Ard Bhearna Estate in the interest of safety especially ofthe 60 children living in the estate.

Kenmare & District Garden ClubOnAugust 19th and 20th, the Club spent 2 very enjoyable days in thecentre of Ireland including a return visit to Terra Nova, a very colourfuland interesting garden with plenty of plants for sale and this was followedby Angela Jupe’s wonderful walled garden, Birr. Birr Castle andDesmesne is well worth seeing and there is plenty for everyone includingthe science centre, the huge telescope and also marvellous parkland withancient trees and a river running through it. The following day saw us atClonohill Gardens near Portlaoise - a country farmhouse garden whichwas full of colour and well laid-out beds and then we were off to Tanguyde Toulgoët’s working kitchen garden where we were given lots of usefuladvice about growing fruit and vegetables alongside flowers. A quick stopat another nursery to stock up on plants and we returned home tired andfull of information. Our monthly meetings have resumed and on Thursday, 5th September

we spent a most enjoyable evening at Willowfield, Kenmare. It was awell-attended if somewhat cooler evening than of late and Margaret’s talkon What To Plant For Spring Containers was most entertaining andinformative. Apart from showing us some gorgeous bulbs available now,she demonstrated how to use them in pots containing lovely foliage plantsso that there is something interesting to look at from now until the bulbsbloom in the spring. A few helpful tips when planting bulbs, such as usingbulb fibre for pots along with a little lime and grit and feeding bulbs oncethey have flowered, were thrown in for good measure.Next month we will be back at Gateway, 7.30 p.m. on Thursday, 3rdOctober when Peter Harrison, the Chairman of the RHSI, will be talkingto us about Autumn Chores and Autumn Gardens. 6 euro members/9 euroguests. Hope to see you all there.

Kenmare & Locality Animal Welfare Society are delighted to launchtheir new website klawskerry.webs.com. Thank you to ‘TC’who workedso hard in bringing this all together. We are also in the process of opening our new unit at the SuperValu MallKenmare. A huge thank you to Derry and all the staff at Murphy'sSuperValu Kenmare. We plan to be open as soon as possible but in themeantime the Bric a Brac stall will still be held in the same place as usualevery Friday. These two events could not have come at a better time as KLAWS isfinding itself in a really difficult position now with funding. Our bills arerocketing and we are truly struggling to keep afloat. We hope that withthese two new supports will help us remain open, if not it will indeed be ableak future for the local unwanted animals.

18 | Kenmare NewsMore Students Complain of Back PainCarrying heavy bags for a long time or distance isn't good for anyone, least of all children. School children are burdened to carry a variety ofheavy objects such a text books, stationery and lunch bags and for themost part these loads are carried in backpacks. Researchers have foundthat the weight carried on their back is often 30 to 40% of their own bodyweight despite recommendations that schoolbags should not exceed 10-15%.Carrying a heavy bag on the back causes forward leaning and bad posture, which can lead to improper weight bearing on the spine, and pains andaches in the back and shoulders. Carrying a backpack weighing over 15%of body weight makes a child or adolescent unable to maintain properstanding posture.Children who use one strap bags (which put weight on one shoulder only)can cause asymmetric weight distribution and sideways deviation of thespine (scoliosis). Forward bending of the spine (also called kyphoticposture) due to the excessive weight of the bags makes the work ofbreathing harder. In a recent study it was found that children carryingbags weighing more than 10% of their body weight have been found tohave poorer lung function.Tips for proper wear of backpacks:Lighten the load. Keep the load at 10-15% or less of the child’sbodyweight.Carry only those items that are required for the dayUse lockers to store unneeded books or kitOrganise the contents of the backpack by placing the heaviest itemsclosest to the backWear both straps: Use of one strap causes one side of the body to bearthe weight of the backpack.Pay close attention to the way the backpack is positioned, it should restevenly in the middle of the back and not below the hipsAdjust the shoulder straps correctlyRemove and put on backpacks carefully: Keep the trunk of your bodystable and avoid excessive twistingBend at the knees with the back straight when lifting the bagErgonomically designed features that enhance safety and comfort:A padded back to reduce pressure on the back and shoulders and enhHip and chest belts to transfer some of the backpack weight to the hipsand torsoMultiple compartments to better distribute the weight and for easy accessReflective material to enhance visibility and safetyDesign made of light weight materialBroad padded or 'S' shape straps to distribute the weightTrolley/Wheeled bags to unload the backParents should look out for the following warning signs of excessivebackpack weight:Change in posture when wearing the backpack;Struggling when putting on or taking off the backpack;Back, neck or shoulder painNeurological signs such as tingling and numbness in the arms and handsRed marks on the shouldersStudents are prime candidates for aches and pains. Carrying a school bagis a necessity, however by following these guidelines parents can make itsafer and a more back and child friendly experience. For more information or for a complimentary consultation please ringDr Bobbi Kestler 087 2982697.

Neidin Indoor Bowls ClubThe competitive spirit was in the air again on August 22nd when BowlsClubs from all over Kerry converged on K.C.K. Club venue in Keel tocompete in the Sean Chairde Friendly Open Day Bowls Competition.Fortyeight or more bowlers including 15 from Neidin Club took part. The Open Draw meant each team of 4 players were from different clubs, and, played with each other on a knock-out basis; producing outstandingbowling skills. Second place skippered by Maeve Arnold-Kenmare Bowls Club with 23 points and third place went to the teamskippered by Pat Murphy – Keel Castlemaine Bowls Club (KCK) with 19points. Tidiest Small Town in Ireland. Congratulations to the Kenmare TidyTowns Committee and all of the volunteers who ensured that Kenmare hasonce again been awarded the Tidiest Small Town in Ireland under theNational Tidy Towns Awards system. A tremendous effort has been madeand Kenmare is looking absolutely brilliant. There are a couple of troublespots in the town which I am presently trying to sort out and this will onlyfurther enhance the appearance of the great town that is Kenmare. Thanks again to all of the volunteers who have ensured, in conjunctionwith the business people, that we have an absolutely excellent product inKenmare which is second to none, not just in Kerry, not just in Ireland, notjust in Europe but throughout the world. There is no small town betterthan Kenmare anywhere!

Kenmare Ambulance Service. I was glad to have worked closely with theSave Our Ambulance Kenmare group and, during a recent meeting withmanagement from the Ambulance Service, it has been confirmed thatKenmare will retain a 24 hour/7day a week ambulance service for ourregion. This of course is most welcome. You must remember that lastyear the proposal was that Caherciveen and Kenmare would share oneambulance which of course was totally ridiculous and could not beallowed to go ahead. However, there is one worrying issue and that is that Killarney is to lose anambulance that it has had for the last 36 years. It was also confirmed thatwhen there is a shortfall in Killarney that the Kenmare ambulance wouldthen be called to service that area. This would then leave the GreaterKenmare area with absolutely no ambulance. This is worrying and I ampresently in discussions with the ambulance service to try and ensure thatthe Kenmare area can be assured of having a proper service at all times.

Relief Road.Work is continuing on the relief road for Kenmare. KerryCounty Councils area office, local engineer, overseers and workers are tobe complimented on the good progress that has been made. It is hopedthat the road will be ready to open at the end of this year. There are stillconsiderable works to be carried out. Some of these jobs are beingtendered out and every effort will be made to try to have it completed asquickly as possible.

Reform. Unfortunately this Governments idea of reform is to abolish. They wish to do away with the town councils that have served ourcommunities very well back over the years. It is ridiculous that towns suchas Killarney, Tralee and Listowel will no longer have a Mayor of theirtown or town councillors to represent their constituents on a localauthority.Instead of reforming the Seanad they wish to abolish it. Many would saythat the Seanad and Senators would be no loss. However, I believe if theywere put working properly that there would be a role for them rather thanbeing just political commentators, such as many of them are at present.

Our local development companies have been an excellent model ofdelivering funds to local businesses and community groups. TheGovernments idea of reform here is to abolish the boards completely andput them under the umbrella of the local authorities i.e Kerry CountyCouncil. This is obviously wrong and whether it is in Health, Education,

Transport or any of the other very important issues that affect people’sdaily lives, this Government is continuing to pursue a ridiculous policy ofAbolition!, Abolish!, Get rid of! Time will prove that this policy is not forthe betterment of the people of our country.

Conference. It has been confirmed that the Adventure Travel WorldSummit will take place in Killarney next year, for 4 days from 6th – 9thOctober. Over145 tour groups will participate in this major event.Businesses from all over Kerry who specialise in adventure tourism, whichis a massive growth area, will have an excellent opportunity to showcasetheir business. We are very fortunate in the Kenmare area to have so manybusinesses who concentrate on adventure sports and which brings peoplefrom all over Ireland and Europe to this locality. It is vital for as manypeople as possible to be involved in this conference to ensure that it is asuccess and that this great opportunity is well used.

Garda Vetting. I have lobbied for a long time with regard to the delays inpeople securing Garda Vetting. Garda Vetting is required for many jobs i.echildcare, all of the schemes – CE, Tus and RSS etc. Delays at present areon average 14 weeks from the date of receipt. I am glad that the concernsthat I highlighted have been taken on board and the Gardai are now in theprocess of developing a new online vetting application system which willcut down on delays. I very much welcome this and I compliment Gardamanagement for taking up this initiative as it can certainly only help thesituation.

Kilgarvan’s EndeavourAward. It was great to see the massive effort thatwas put in by the volunteers in the Kilgarvan Tidy Towns Committeepaying of and that Kilgarvan, for the first time, has won an endeavouraward in the National Tidy Towns competition. This is a richly deservedrecognition of the massive improvement in Kilgarvan village over thesummer months by the volunteers in the Tidy Towns Committee.Everyone that has worked so hard has now seen their efforts beingacknowledged at a national level. It is a great encouragement to keep upthe work and continue to improve Kilgarvan so that it is a place thateveryone can be rightly very proud of.

This yearwe opened it up to outside areas and people from Kenmare and Sneemalong with the usual Blackwater/Templenoe & Blackvalley areas attended. There was a good turn-out despite the rain and the All Ireland hurlinggame between Clare & Cork on TV.Timothy Clifford was Master of Ceremonies and we would like to thank

him and his team of helpers from Templenoe GAAClub for preparing thefield and organising all the sporting events. The medals were sponsored by Mary and Teddy O’Neill of BlackwaterTavern. We would like to thank them and everyone who sponsored raffleprizes etc for the event and thanks to everyone who helped in any way onthe day, it was much appreciated. This year we added an new category; a cake baking competition. SFL Round 10. With two rounds left in the county league things are delicatelypoised for our senior footballers. We are on the bottom of the league but with agame in hand on those above us it is still within us to stay up. The clutter at thebottom will not be resolved until the last day of the league but with three teamsto go down it will be finernail time on the last day.

Kenmare 1-14 Finuge 0-9A little bite in the air and a lot more bite in this performance from theShamrocks! It is timely, two games left in the county league and we want tohang onto division 2 status and with us playing like we did this evening wehave a good chance now.A bright opening from both sides saw the teams level on 0-4 apiece our pointscoming from four different sources (Kevin, Alan, Shane and Stephen) but itwas the interplay between all the forwards that was most pleasing.Mark Crowley added a free to put us ahead and 20 minutes we worked a goodgoal chance – Shane, Stephen and Dara Crowley all involved on the right asKevin O’Sullivan missed narrowly. One minute later he popped a lovely pointin recompense and then was involved in the move on the endline along withStephen O’Brien, which ended with Alan O’Leary banging a goal which gaveus a commanding lead.Sean O’Leary, again a rock at centre-back, spotted Mark Crowley free on 25minutes and Mark slotted his second score with ease and Shane O’Sullivanfinished a good half for him and the team with a fine point to send us in at thebreak 1-9 to 0-5 ahead. The hits were bigger in the second half as you would expect with Finuge notwilling to go down tamely. Jimmy Wharton was breaking a lot of ball atmidfield and we kept the scoreboard ticking with the first of the half comingfrom Seanie O’Leary. Thereafter all our scores came from Stephen O’Brienwho looked very sharp on his return, hitting six points in total, all from play.Overall a great win...a relief to get the points and good to see us play more likewe can do. Also great to be back on our own pitch which was in great shapethanks to the work put in by members of the club. Some of them have puthours on hours into the pitch in the past nine months and it is fitting that wewon our first game back on it. Now, two more games to stay up in division 2,Kenmare Abu!Kenmare: Ciaran Fitzgibbon; Stephen O’Shea, Tommy O’Sullivan, DaraCrowley; Brian Clifford, Sean O’Leary (0-1), Dara Crowley; Jimmy Wharton,Shane Dalton; Alan O’Leary (1-1), Mark Crowley (0-2, 0-1fr), KevinO’Sullivan (0-2); Shane O’Sullivan (0-2), Stephen O’Brien (0-6), SeanMurphy.Subs: Denis O’Shea, Eoin McSweeny.

Hurling Blitz. There were huge numbers at the club last week for an U8hurling blitz versus Rathmore. It was a lovely sunny evening and all presentseemed to enjoy themselves. Well done to team mentors and all who helped.

Club Lotto. There was no winner of last weeks Lotto Draw. The Lucky Dipwinners of €50 were Fiona Looney and John S Carey. The next draw will beon September 22nd and the Jackpot will be €2200. Thanks to all those whoare supporting this new venture tickets are €2 and three for €5.

Kerry Minors. Well done to the Kerry Minor hurlers on their fantastic victoryon Saturday. In particular the club would like to congratulate FionanO'Sullivan and David Crowley from Shamrocks and Patrick O'Shea fromKilgravan. A fantastic achievement for the lads and their clubs.

2013/2014 Season Underway.Since our last write up quite a lot has happenedbehind the scenes at Inter Kenmare, AGM, 5 a-side, bag packing fundraiser and all teams haveregistered and signed up for the new year withour first round of underage games havingalready been played.5 A-Side.The 5 a-side took place from the 12th to 25thAugust this year and was a great success for theclub with some wonderful games on show forthe many spectators who attended. This year’sevent had ten men’s teams and five women’swith an underage blitz taking place on themorning of the 25th. The men were split intotwo groups with the top two teams from eachqualifying for the premier cup and the third andforth placed teams contesting the reserve cup.The top four teams in the women’s tablecontested the knockout stages of the women’scup.Men’s Reserve Final Stonebuster’s 4 : 0 B &J Rochford TAfter conceding an early goal B&J settled andcreated some good opportunities to equalise butunfortunately were unable to convert any ofthem. Stonebuster’s second goal really seemedto knock the wind out of B&J and a combinationof needing to claw two goals back and sometired legs lead to stonebuster’s adding two morebefore the end. Stonebusters fully deserved theirvictory and looked comfortable after taking theirearly lead.Women’s Final Diesel Queens 2 : 3Coachman’sThis truly was a competitive and entertainingfinal with both sides giving it they’re all, in theend only a goal separated the teams with theyounger ladies coming out victorious. TheCoachman’s had the better of possession andlooked dangerous from the start with CarolineMcCarthy looking capable of scoring almost atwill. Diesel Queens have been here before andwere always in this match with some greatcounter attacking football of their own. In theend Diesel Queens just couldn’t find thatequalizing goal and Coachman’s held on for awell deserved victory.Men’s Premier Final Trapittoni Youth 2 : 1Tim’s All-StarsThis was an entertaining and well contestedfinal played at a very high tempo from start tofinish with the difference between the teamsbeing the quality of the finishing. Trapittoni’swent ahead with two well worked goals andtheir movement was creating Tim’s All-Stars allkinds of trouble, but they never gave and pulled

one back with some time still to play. Tim’s All-Stars throw everything they had at Trapittoni’sbut just couldn’t find that second goal. After chairperson Majella O’Sullivan hadpresented the winning teams with their trophiesall that was left to do was head to theCoachman’s for a drink, some brief speechesand to announce the player of the tournament forboth the men and women’s competition. Thisyears winners were the inspirational DavidClifford of Trapittoni Youth and the lethalCaroline McCarthy of Coachman’s.Finally a quick thank you to all who helped inrunning this years event, THANKYOU to allthe referees, linesmen, maintenance staff, gatecollectors, shop keepers, sponsors, managers, players and supporters.
