Historically present since 1972 in the photovoltaic industry with its subsidiary Total Énergie Développement (TED), Total Group has been deeply involved across the solar value chain. In 2011, Total became one of the world’s premiere solar players with the acquisition of a majority stake in SunPower, a U.S. manufacturer of high-tech solar equipment (photovoltaic panels and load-bearing structures following the course of the sun).Total Solar was created in 2017 as a subsidiary of Total Group to be present in the development, financing, construction and operation of photovoltaic projects around the world to fulfill the group’s ambition in low-carbon energies. As we are active around the world, we are in a position to roll out projects in multiple sites across several countries and/or regions at the same time.

5 TOTAL SOLAR: HARNESSING THE ENERGY OF THE FUTURE
Total’s first Japanese solar power station was built in Nanao, in March 2017. This 25-hectares solar farm’s 80,000 high-efficiency solar panels power 9,000 homes in the country.
Total, which has been active in South Africa for 50 years, was chosen to build and operate one of Africa’s largest ground-mounted solar farms in Prieska, Northern Cape. This 75 MW farm has been powering about 75,000 South African homes since 2016.

The First Utility-Scale Solar Power Plant in the Middle East
Shams 1 was launched in 2008 as a partnership between Total with a 20% stake, Abu Dhabi’s Masdar with 60% and Abengoa with 20%. Inaugurated in March 2013 and located in Abu Dhabi, Shams 1 is the first utility scale commercial solar plant in the Middle East in operation, supplying 110 megawatts of clean energy directly into the UAE national grid, generating enough power to supply 20,000 homes.
The project uses parabolic mirrors spread over an area of 2.5 square kilometers generating 80% of its power from the sun, while the remaining percentage comes from natural gas.

Total has been involved in Abu Dhabi since 1939 and present in the UAE since its creation in 1971. With over 560 employees in the UAE, Total is active in the areas of exploration and production (oil and gas), renewable energies and power generation, marketing and services, and petrochemicals and fertilizers.
Total has a presence since 2000 for Power Production with projects like Taweelah (10% of the UAE’s water and electricity production) and since 2013 for Solar with projects such as Masdar SHAMS 1 (110 MW of concentrated solar on a 2.5 km2 plant).

The net metering scheme goal is to diversify the energy mix by promoting the use of clean, renewable energy sources to build a sustainable future for the Emirates. The electricity is used on-site and the surplus is exported to the grid network and credited for future needs.

At our request, our PV suppliers have joined PV Cycle, a certified organization that processes used photovoltaic modules and recycles defective modules or systems at the end of their life.
Our HSE policy cascades into detailed and structured operational processes: we identify risks, prevent them, provide training, embark processes on continuous improvement cycles and track progress. Keeping people healthy and safe, and keeping the environment clean, is everyone’s job.
