You are a crime scene investigator
We find out how RockStar Games is
revolutionising gaming
L.A. Noire is different. It's not
like most video games
developed by Rockstar. You
don't play the outlaw
running wild, free to kill,
steal, and cause destruction.
You're a cop. A good cop at that,
determined to restore order to
the violent streets of 1940s Los
Angeles.
L.A. Noire's not like most games.
Sure, there are car chases,
gunfights, and a point-tally to
judge the quality of your police
justice, but it's a slow-paced,
an animator manipulating things
from behind the scenes. It's a
striking, sometimes unnerving
effect certain to help push video
games closer to true cinematic
experiences. It's easy to fall into
old video game habits like
checking your phone while
listening to a line of dialogue, but
you're setting yourself up for
failure. The actors' tells are in their
faces, their posture, their eyes –
rarely is it revealed in what they
say. This is where L.A. Noire
shines. The interrogations are like
meditative experience. The focus
isn't on how good you are at
scoring headshots with a pistol
but instead your ability to read a
suspect's face and
determine if he or she is telling the
truth, holding something back, or
flat out lying.
Using a brand new technology
called MotionScan, L.A. Noire
delivers pure performances from
a talented group of actors. Every
wrinkle, twitch, downward glance,
grimace, and hard swallow is
from an actor playing a part, not

lengthy dialogue scenes you'd
see in an RPG -- but they're
captivating. This is the core of L.A.
Noire and that core is very good.
You're a detective, so you're going
to scour crime scenes searching
for clues. And when you question
witnesses, you have to think less
like a gamer and more like a
sleuth. It's not easy. In fact, it's
often a real challenge to judge the
trustworthiness of a witness'
worse you do, the tougher it is to
get at the truth, but there's no
possibility of failure in any
conversation. L.A. Noire won't
abruptly end if you fail to catch a
killer's lie or miss an important
clue. The bad guy only gets away
if it's pre-determined in the story.
The only game over screen
comes from dying or allowing a
fleeing suspect to escape. This
makes you less of a real detective
and more of a page turner,
destined to always reach the next
chapter so long as you make a
choice -- any choice.
L.A. Noire isn't all about badgering
statement. The line between
"doubt" and "lie" is very narrow.
Though L.A. Noire's hero, Cole
Phelps, is regarded as one of the
best case men ever, I still
managed to falsely accuse
dozens of suspects, doubt
witnesses who were actually
forthcoming, and use the wrong
clues to try and catch killers in lies.
The Record KeeperAfter every question, selected
from Phelps' trusty notebook, you
get a response from the suspect.
Then you must choose to believe,
doubt, or accuse them of lying. Get
it right and you can open them up
and get more clues. Get it
wrong, and they offer less. The
better you do over the course of a
case, the more you'll understand
the suspect's motivations. The

are some other things to do. Forty
"unassigned cases" come in as
calls on the radio. These aren't
random; they're single-scene
missions where you'll stop a
bank robbery, chase down a bat-
wielding lunatic, or shadow a
crook to his hideout.
A few other distractions can be
had -- finding all of the famous L.A.
locations and discovering more
than a dozen hidden cars -- which
earn you points towards leveling
up your rank. New ranks mean
new clothes, hidden car locations,
and intuition points (which can be
spent to reveal clues and narrow
choices when interrogating a
suspect).

“The facial expression in L.A Noire is very realistic, with
RockStar games claiming to have invested 20,000
polygons on the average build of each character.”
Final ThoughtsThis is the "game" portion of L.A.
Noire, the part built for those who
aren't ready to release their old
needs as gamers. And maybe
Rockstar is struggling to release
that same hold. I like going about
town, but L.A. Noire would have
been stronger with greater focus
on the experience and less
concern for including traditional
game elements.
Each time I start getting
immersed in the world, I'm
reminded "you're playing a game"
with unnecessary text popping
up on the screen or a score
tallying my lie-detecting ability.
There are moments when L.A.
Noire comes together brilliantly,
when the threads from multiple
cases lead to a darker ringleader.
But more often, things are
perhaps too true to real police
work – repetitive, redundant, and
unsurprising. Despite having 21
cases, some of which can take
more than an hour to complete,
L.A. Noire drags at times because
it recycles the same drama. So hit
start on your Playstation 3
controller and get the best out of
your time in RockStar’s newest
release. Hope you won’t lose
your way in L.A. Noire’s gigantic
map.

given that the data

The online fight feels like a
geography lesson (in a good way).
Depending on the game mode, each
map utilizes a different area or shifts
wider and wider as gameplay

Total Playstation: What kind of
feedback have you had from both the
Open Beta and the Closed Beta, and
what are some of the
improvements you’ve made as a
reaction to that?
Patrick Liu: A lot of stuff, especially
from the previous version. For
example, we reworked the spotting
from the ground up. We changed all
the map layouts, removed the LAV...
We customised the balancing and
behaviour of a lot of the weapons.
Total Playstation: Some of the
more vocal feedback on the web
have noted the Beta’s bugginess and
lag. Is that reflective of the final game,
or is that something you’ve taken on
board?
Patrick Liu: Yeah, it’s definitely buggy.
I’ll admit to that, I’m not going to hide
that fact. But the point is that this is
early software. I know a lot of people
think that, while it’s called a Beta it’s
actually a Demo, but this is a true
Beta. It’s not a Demo. We’re doing
real live testing of the backend while
people are playing.
Total Playstation: Does that annoy
you, the distinction between Beta
and Demo that some players don’t
seem to understand?
Patrick Liu: Yeah, it can be annoying
sometimes, just reading the
comments and knowing what the
Beta actually is. But, you get used to it
I guess. Take your time to play.
Total Playstation: You have some
truly huge maps in the game. How
challenging was it to pack in the
amount of content you have,
especially when working with
technology that’s five years old?
Patrick Liu: It has been a challenge,
yes (laughs)! It kind of works out,
with the new streaming technology
that we have. That’s really helped us
out with the big maps. We tried to do
that in Bad Company, but we never
really managed to make them as big
as in Battlefield 3. At that point we
didn’t even have any streaming at all
included with the Frostbite 1 engine.
Total Playstation: Battlefield 3 is
being hailed as one of the most
graphically realistic games out there.
So obviously on an audio-visual level
the game is pretty high-end. Could it
go further? Is there a need in your
mind for a new generation of
consoles when you can pull off this
kind of graphical fidelity from an Xbox
360?
Patrick Liu: I would say that we’ve
been exploiting the hardware as
much as we can with Frostbite 2. We
would definitely require a new
generation of consoles to make
something that’s better than
Frostbite 2. We’ll see...

Demon’s SoulsReleased October 6, 2009
There isn't much to say about Burnout Paradise -- it's
pretty much the perfect racing game. It's beautiful, it's
deep and Criterion has been continually supporting it
since launch in 2008. Motorcycles, a DeLorean knockoff,
tracks and more have been just some of the additions
to this online racer, and now it's less than $10. All of it.
The deal is insane, and the game still handles like a
dream.
Truth be told, Demon's Souls is a polarizing title. Some
hate the game because it's so old school, but others
are drawn to it for that very reason. You need to crawl
through environments slaying monsters. If you die,
you have to restart at the beginning of the level and
make it back to your stuff. Fail, and all your progress is
lost. Still, Demon's Souls is a huge game with tons to do
and just the right mix of sadomasochism and addictive

Resistance: Fall of ManReleased November 13, 2006
There are few franchises more synonymous with the
PlayStation brand than Insomniac's Ratchet & Clank
series. The most recent entry into the saga on
PlayStation 3 was A Crack in Time, a great game that not
only takes full advantage of PS3's tech, but keeps the
series' beloved characters, humor and weapons intact
as well. A Crack in Time is a standout action-platformer
that's both challenging and accessible, one of the
hallmarks of Ratchet & Clank since the PlayStation 2
days and the singular reason why Ratchet & Clank
games have such broad appeal.
Launch titles are especially important for any console
as it rushes out of the gate, and the PlayStation 3 was
no exception. Back in the fall of 2006, many gamers
were surprised to learn that Insomniac, the makers of
Ratchet & Clank and Spyro, would be working on a first-

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the PatriotsReleased June 12, 2008
Developer Obsidian often gets a lot of grief for its
games, but Fallout: New Vegas shouldn't be one of the
titles people complain about. A larger and deeper
version of Fallout initially designed in Bethesda's Fallout
3, New Vegas promises hundreds of hours of
immersion. There's no way to see and do everything
the game has to offer in a short amount of time, which
is one of New Vegas' great draws. And unlike Fallout 3,
New Vegas offers gamers a quest that's completely
gray. The choices you make are nebulous, and it's
never really clear if you're playing a good guy or a bad
guy.
Yes, Total Playstation gave Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of
the Patriots a perfect 10 out of 10 and now we're not
even letting it crack the Top 15 PS3 games, but stick with
us -- MGS4 is the perfect finale to Solid Snake's story. It
