Total Ethiopia at a GlanceTotal Ethiopia was established in 1950 E.C as a distributor of TOTAL petroleum products, i.e. Fuel, lubricants, LPG and Bitumen. After more than 40 years of operating in the country, the name TOTAL Mer Rouge was changed and organized in accordance with the Ethiopian Commercial law with a new name Total Ethiopia S.C., in September 1997.
Total Ethiopia further developed its activities by merging with Mobil Oil East Africa Limited – Ethiopian branch at the end of 2006. Total Ethiopia is currently among the major oil companies in the country. Total Ethiopia is also a responsible citizen company that actively promotes road safety, fighting against malaria and HIV/AIDS ensuring product quality and developing renewable energies such as solar energy (www.totalethiopia.com).

Today, Total Ethiopia operates 150 service stations, 4 Aviation operating depots and state-of-the-art Fuels and LPG Depot at Dukem.
Dukem Depot : to sustain operations in Addis Ababa
State of the art Fuel and LPG Depot, located in Dukem town which is 37km south of the capital, Addis Ababa, in the Oromia Regional State commissioned September 2016. Depot designed to sustain approximately 10 days of Total Ethiopia’s sales around the Addis Ababa region.
• Constructed based on suitable API standards and European norms.
• Total storage capacity is 8,100 m3 for fuel & 100 tons of LPG.
• Product receipt by road tankers with future link to railway.
• Equipped with:
▸ Up to date automated safety and operational devices on all storage tanks.
▸ LPG cylinder filling and ethanol blending facility.
▸ Segregated sewers and oil interceptors to prevent pollution.
▸ Self sufficient automatic fire fighting system.
▸ Ease and operationally suitable equipment in conformity with occupational safety standards.

Total Quartz Auto Service : a unique conceptin EthiopiaTOTAL developed the Total Quartz shop concept back in 2001. Now, the concept has developed and renamed as Total Quartz Auto Service (TQAS). TQAS is a concept of quick oil change center under TOTAL banners developed with local partners. Today, Total Group has more than 1,000 TQAS sites in Africa.
TQAS concept was wholly started in Total Ethiopia in 2017. Since 2017 Total Ethiopia has opened 52 TQAS sites, out of which 32 are in Addis Ababa & the remaining 20 are in upcountry. Total Ethiopia has invested more than 40 million Birr so far to date for the development of 52 TQAS Centers. The project has directly created more than 200 job opportunities throughout the country. In the coming five years (2020 -2024), 250 more TQAS sites will be opened in Ethiopia.

All sites and activities owned and/or operated by Total Ethiopia or its representatives comply with its Health, Safety, Security, Environment (HSE) and Quality requirements.
In Total Ethiopia, all projects and operations undergo in a systematic risk analysis to identify the preventive actions that one should consider prior to committing any operation. Total Ethiopia’s Management and staff are committed and tirelessly work within the framework of its HSE Management System to achieve HSE objectives and continuously improve the safety culture.
Progress / Ability, Awareness and EvolutionTotal Ethiopia’s workplace safety record have consistently improved in the last ten years. Our safety records are the best in the industry. Over the last ten years the number of accidents per year reduced by 97%, number of Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR) events dropped by 92% and near miss reporting index increased by 650%. Furthermore, Total Ethiopia has operated more than twenty years without any petroleum product spill in its operational sites.
Our objective is still to conduct safe operations with zero accidents emphasizing on respecting the Total Golden and HSE Rules. In HSE, nothing can be taken for granted. We continuously focus on preventive actions in the pursuit of our «Go home safe», and we, at Total, are fully committed to achieving it every day.

Total Ethiopia is dedicated to provide support to its partners in the HSE management system, including technical assistance and awareness creation in major risk analysis and management. One of our major focuses is Road Safety.

Based on feedbacks and experiences from safety at work sites and all staff and partners
working with Total are required to strictly apply the rules.
PROGRESS CARDTotal Ethiopia staff or its partners are authorized to intervene and
stop work using a “progress Card” whenever they observe
unsafe situations/ behaviors with a potential to escalate an accident.
QUALITY CONTROLTotal Ethiopia strictly controls its product quality during product
transportation, storage and dispensing to ensure the best
product quality possible is supplied to customers.
SAFETY PASS AND HSE TRAINING
Safety pass is a mandatory safety training program aimed to ensure
that new recruited personnel have acquired appropriate safety
knowledge and skills before commencing work.
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Performance
Educational programs• Donated Science laboratory equipment, computers, printers, servers, books and teaching materials,
photocopy machines and accessories to some Universities and donated 600,000 ETB to the Gogecha government primary elementary school.
• Signed an MOU with two Universities to sponsor R&D projects and to identify exceptional students for potential employment opportunities at Total Ethiopia.
• Supports Young Entrepreneurs and Graduates with “Total Startupper of the Year”. “Total Startupper of the Year” is a program initiated by the Total Group in 34 African countries.
Health Programs• Total Ethiopia has partnered with local NGOs and Ministry of Health and the Malaria Consortium to
demonstrate and distribute HIV/AIDS awareness raising educational materials and kits to low-income women’s, house maids and malaria high-risk zone schools and towns.
• In 2012 & 2018 the Total Foundation donated Eur. 12,000 to Inter Aide France for the water project, “You Act We Help” Employees Project for “Durable Access to Safe Drinking Water”, of Dawro and Gamogofa zones of SNNPR.
• In 2020, Total Ethiopia has donated 17 million ETB in sanitizer, fuel card for Ministry of Health and sanitary soaps to NGOs to support the fight against the COVID-19 virus.
In line with 4 pillars of CSR, Total Ethiopia has the following programs:

Road Safety Programs• Total Ethiopia, in collaboration with the Federal Transport Authority (FTA), initiated Djibouti Corridor Road
Safety Awareness Campaign for heavy truck drivers and alone contributed ETB 750,000 for the pilot program to successfully train 500 truck drivers. Total Ethiopia, together with partners contributed an additional ETB 1,153,535 and implemented a scale up program.
• Total Ethiopia donated 46 Road Safety Cubes to primary schools located in the high risk zones in Addis Ababa including a one month Road Safety Awareness Training Program.
Community Development / Capacity Building ProgramsDuring the last four years Total Ethiopia:
• Donated ETB 570,000 to rehabilitate the access road to the Gogecha Kebele village farmers of the Dukem Depot area.
• Took the initiative of supporting the Mary Joy Development Association (MJDA) by donating clothing worth more than ETB 200,000.
• Donated furniture, kitchen equipment and utensils as well as ETB 100,000 in cash to Mekedonia Elderly and Mentally Disabled Center.
• Donated ETB 500,000 to the Dukem town Administration to support internally displaced people from the Somali region who have settled in Dukem town.

Total’s StartUpper program
The second round of Total’s StartUpper program was very successful in Ethiopia. In 2019, Total worldwide launched the program in 62 countries in Eastern Europe, South America, Asia and Africa.
Thousands of projects were received and TOTAL supported the pre-selected young entrepreneurs with teachings about creating an effective pitch, a long-term business plan and how to endure rigorous questioning from experts about their visionary, sustainable projects for the country.
3 winners were awarded with prizes, and one of the three winners, a young woman, was invited to Paris to join the Digital National Women’s Day of France, hosted by the Prime Minister. Total Ethiopia will continue to support young Ethiopian entrepreneurs with ideas, projects and who are full of energy.
