What are the Canadian Language Benchmarks? The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) are the national standard used in Canada to measure, describe and recognize the level of English language proficiency in adult learners. The four main skill areas assessed through these benchmarks are reading, writing, speaking and listening. Real-life language tasks are also used to measure these skills. CLB levels run from 1-12. In addition, there are four benchmarks for ESL literacy. CLB information helps us plan curriculum and evaluate our classes, to best meet our learners’ needs.
