D. Publications

1. MOST SIGNIFICANT PUBLICATIONS

1. Principal Author. Sinyor M, Levitt AJ. Effect of a Barrier at Bloor Street Viaduct on Suicide Rates in Toronto: Natural Experiment. BMJ 2010; 341, c2884. Impact Factor 13.471 Examined suicide prevention at the second most frequented bridge for suicide next to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. This is the most comprehensive study of a suicide barrier to date and the first study to show a statistically significant increase in suicides at other locations when suicide was restricted at a suicide hotspot. This has important implications for our understanding of suicide and for future suicide prevention strategies.

2. Principal Author. Sinyor M, Levitt AJ, Cheung AH, Schaffer A, Kiss A, Dowlati Y, Lactot KL. Does Inclusion of a Placebo Influence Response to Active Antidepressant Treatment in Randomized Controlled Trials? Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2010; 71, 3:270-279. Impact Factor 5.023. Demonstrated that study design influences patient expectations in antidepressant clinical trials which is in turn affecting outcomes. This is work identified a novel source of confounding in randomized controlled trials which needs to be addressed in future work.

3. Principal Author. Sinyor M, Schaffer A, Smart K, Levitt AJ, Lactot KL, Grysman N. Sponsorship, Antidepressant Dose and Outcome in Major Depressive Disorder: Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2012; 73, 2:e277-e287. Impact Factor 5.023. Demonstrated that industry sponsored medication arms are dosed relatively higher than non-sponsor medication arms and that this influences antidepressant RCT outcomes favouring sponsor medications. This is the first study to demonstrate this sort of dosing bias in psychiatric research and has important implications for how trials are designed and results reported in the future.

4. Principal Author. Sinyor M, Howlett A, Cheung AH, Schaffer A. Substances Used in Completed Suicide by

Overdose in Toronto: An Observational Study of Coroner’s Data. Canadian Journal of Psychiatry 2012; 57, 3:184-191. Impact Factor 2.497. Identified risk factors for completed suicide by overdose as well as medications commonly used in suicide death by overdose in an effort to promote improved suicide assessment and prevention strategies. This study identified several drugs that are more commonly used for suicide in Toronto and provides important guidance to psychiatrists, family doctors, pain specialists, cardiologists and pharmacists in terms of how to identify and minimize risk.

5. Principal Author. Sinyor M, Feinstein A. War, Journalism and Psychopathology: Does Gender Play a Role? Traumatology 2012; 18, 1:29-36. Impact Factor A study demonstrating high rates of psychiatric illness but also resiliency particularly in female reporters who have worked in Iraq, Afghanistan and other warzones. This study identified unusually uniform rates of mental illness between genders and suggests that women who pursue war correspondence and other high-risk occupations may provide important clues regarding resilience to trauma.
