DECEMBER 2018 Greetings Booker Nation, With the Holiday season upon us, December is always a time of anticipation and excitement. At Booker Middle School, we welcomed December with a visit from various stakeholders. Our school was selected to showcase exemplary practices. We have embarked upon a vision that celebrates each scholar, while helping us to realize the importance of making a collaborative impact. Although it has been very challenging for our staff and students to organize and host visitors throughout the first half of this school year, it has also been rewarding. We have received excellent feedback from our visitors, thus validating that our teachers are doing phenomenal work with students. After spending time in classrooms, one visitor said to me, “Booker Middle School is a great example of striving to meet the needs of all student. Your teachers make it happen here.” I considered that comment one of the best testimonials and highest compliments I have ever heard about our school. I am always telling folks what great things happen at Booker Middle School, but to hear it from a visitor experiencing our school for the first time was truly validating. As you know, there are many opportunities throughout the year for parents to visit and see the great things our students and teachers do here at school. Although it is a short month with the vacation at the end, we always find a way to make the most of our time. Before we left for Thanksgiving break, I told our teachers that I would always give thanks for our staff and all they do for children each day. For December, I am also giving thanks for our wonderful extended community here at Booker Middle School. I wish all our families the very best this holiday season and a very Happy New Year. Holidays Are Stressful for Middle Schoolers,

According to the National Association of Health Education Centers, the chief stressor for students ages

9-13 is school. No middle grades educator is surprised by this, given the factors involved in a student's

school day—grades, homework, friends, bad hair, etc. While the holidays can be a fun time, for some it

also can be stressful. The holidays can be filled with anxiety because of family issues or there can be

long stretches of time with nothing to do during extended breaks. Teachers and parents can help kids in

the middle grades deal with this stress.

Acknowledge that it exists.

Let kids know that you are aware it is a hard time for them. Acknowledging the concern can help ease

stress. This might allow kids to be less hard on themselves for any negative feelings that exist.

Teach stress-reduction techniques.

To help to reduce stress, pre-teens and teens can talk out problems without someone they trust or

engage in other healthy options such as breathing techniques, body relaxation, mental imaging, art,

music, exercise and writing.

Don't let your stress get in the way.

Students who are under stress are going to act out. Kids are going to talk back more, engage in more

fights, and be meaner to each other than at other times. Raising your voice and losing your patience

with students only adds to the tension.

Get students to think beyond themselves.

Spend quality time talking about the needs of others and the issues behind those needs. Focusing on

others is a huge stress-reliever.

To supplement funds received for classroom

supplies our teachers spend their non-teaching time

for $10,000!!

PE received a grant, enabling us to buy the equipment to play

Spike Ball. This is a new game that has recently shown on ESPN!

Donna Heath a grant titled: Walking a Mile in Their Shoes,

Multicultural Understanding Through Literature and Research.

Ms. Dwulit was awarded a grant.

Mr. Silva was awarded a grant for a drum set to start a rock band at BMS.
