NURSERY I & II MOROT ETTIE & TAMI

The story of Chanukah continued to be the focus of our week’s activities. We spoke about Melech Antiochus who would not let the Jews learn Torah or keep Shabbos. We also tried to understand what it meant to the Yehudim to have the Yevanim take over the Bais Hamikdash. The children were amazed to hear about the bravery of the Maccabim. They learned that the nes of Chanukah was not only the nes of the oil but also the winning of the war against the Yevanim. We read the stories A Chanukiah For Dina by Floreva Cohen and I Love Chanukah by Marilyn Hirsch. We also discussed Parashas Vayishlach. Yaakov had to prepare himself for meeting Esav. He prepared himself in three ways: Tefillah, Matana and Milchama. We spoke about Yaakov’s name and how his name was changed to Yisroel. Once again, we enjoyed singing all the names of Yaakov’s children; Reuven, Shimon, Levi...

NURSERY I & II- MOROT NECHAMA & SUSAN

This week, the Safe Child Program was introduced into our classroom. We started with a unit entitled All About Strangers. We discussed the importance of not speaking to people who we do not know. We learned four important rules about strangers: 1. Stay an arm’s distance away from anyone you don’t know. 1. Don’t talk to strangers. 2. Do not accept anything from a stranger. 4. Don’t go with a stranger.

We learned the motto “If you don’t know, don’t go.” We also listened to the stories Yoni Ploni, The Little Yeshiva Boy Never Talks To Strangers! by Yehoshua Danese, The Berenstain Bears Learn About Strangers by Stan and Jan Berenstain and Safety Town, Strangers by Dorothy Chad.

PRE-KI, II & III- MOROT ETTIE & HEIDI

In Parashas Vayishlach, we learned why Yaakov’s name was changed to Yisroel. We reviewed all the names of Yaakov’s sons including Binyamin whose birth was mentioned in this week’s parsha. We learned how Yaakov was reunited with his brother Esav and the preparations he made for this special event. We also talked about Rochel Imenu’s special burial place– Kever Rochel in Eretz Yisroel. Our Hebrw letter was zayin. Some of our vocabulary words are zahav, zvuv, z’ev, zayit and zerizus. We listened to the story Bat-’Em-In Benjie by Chanie Friedman which teaches us to do mitzvos b’zrizus. The children are very excited about their upcoming Chanukah play! They are busy making beautiful Chanukiot and decorations for the classroom. Some of the Chanukah stories we listened to this week were Hanukah! by Roni Schotter, Potato Pancakes All Around by Marilyn Hirsch and A Chanukah Story by Linda Davis. In Pre-KI, the children were divided up into groups and using blocks, legos, clicks and bristle blocks, they tried creating all kinds of menorahs.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!

PRE-KI, II & III- MOROT BERNEY & JUDY

This week, the Pre-K children continued to learn all about Colonial Times. They created their own replicas of log cabins, tents and other historic objects from that time period. They compared the types of food, toys and clothing from Colonial Times to what they have now. The children heard stories about the Mayflower and the travel of the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims came to America seeking freedom. They were taught many skills by the Native Americans.

Our letter of the week was “Bb”. The children sounded out words such as ball, bounce, baby, bridge and bat. The children were taught a poem featuring the letter “Bb”.

Bears On Bicycles

Balloons, banjos, bears on bicycles,

Baseball in the park. Baskets, baths, bumblebees, birthdays,

Bedtime after dark. Bananas, boats, buttons, buses,

Birds that sing to me How many things can you think of

That begin with the letter b?

KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BAYLA & RENA

Preparing for Chanukah has kept the yeladim in Kindergarten busy all week long. We have been busy practicing our parts and songs for the Chanukah play. Please review your child’s part with him/her every day. The yeladim are fascinated with the story of Chanukah. We learned about the victory of the Maccabim over the Yevanim, how the Beis Hamikdash was cleaned up and the nes that occurred when the shemen zayis lasted for eight days instead of one. We enjoyed listening to some Chanukah stories. Our favorites were A Chanukiah For Dina by Floreva Cohen, Chanukah With Bina, Benny And Chagai Hayonah by Yaffa Ganz, The Dangerous Dreidle Ride by Chaiky Halperin and Pini The Pitcher by Batya Kirschenbaum. For Parashas Vayishlach, we heard how Yaakov prepared to meet Esav with tefillah, matanah and milchama. We always beseech Hashem for help in everything we do. We also learned how Rochel Imeinu was buried in Kever Rochel on the way to Beis Lechem. In our reading program, we are reviewing the letters and nekudos that we have learned so far. We also introduced the letter vav and saw that he was a twin with the vais. Even though they do not look alike, they do sound alike. Some of the words that were mentioned that start with the letter vav were Vashti, vered, varod and vilon. Of course Vayetzei and Vayishlach also start with the letter vav. In Project Derech, we learned that it is a mitzvah not to contradict or correct a parent.

KINDERGARTEN I & II- MOROT BERNEY & MIRIAM

Last week, we had such a super, spectacular “Ss” week that we decided to continue our special activities. This week, we completed our “Ss” letterbooks. We started learning about plural nouns and read the words– dogs and dads. We even made a picture of a “Sad Dad,” and are thrilled to know that we can read that phrase. The new book in our listening center was Stone Soup by Marilyn Sapienza. Our culminating activity for “Ss” week was a special spaghetti with sauce lunch. We topped that off with a spectacular dessert of ice cream sundaes. The children had a super time making their own ice cream sundaes with sprinkles, syrup and whipped cream. Thank you to all of the parents for going to the supermarket and sending in the necessary ingredients. In math, we continued our lessons on simple sums, and how we can join two small sets into one large set. In Social Studies, we continued our American History unit on the Pilgrims and Native Americans. We listened to the story of Squanto. The children were fascinated by how Squanto helped the Pilgrims survive in the New World.
