ABOUT TOPSHOP

Topshop is a British multinational retailer which specialises in fashion clothing, shoes, make-up and accessories. It has around 440 shops across 33 countries and online operations which is controlled by Philip Green who

owns a number of other retail outlets including Burton, Dorothy Perkins and Miss Selfridge.

Topshop was founded in 1964 as Peter Robinson's Top Shop, a youth fashion brand within the Sheffield branch of Peter Robinson, a now-defunct British department store chain. The first stand-alone Topshop store was opened in 1974. In 1970, Top man was created as a brand catering for male customers and is now run as a separate chain.

Suppliers

Topshop has been criticized by the student campaigning network People & Planet for allegedly using cotton picked in Bangladesh by slaves, and for refusing to join the Ethical Trading Initiative. In response to criticisms about the workings condition of employees in factories producing products for Topshop Philip Green stated: "You [The Sunday Times] are telling me that factories are happy to breach our code of conduct. I've got to look into it."

RECENT SALES FROM 2011/2012

Sir Phillip Green reported a near 40% drop in profits at Topshop and demanded 250 Uk shops to be drop.

Profits before that were exceptional at Topshop tumbled from £213.2m to £133.1m in the year to 27 August, a decline of nearly 38%.

Philip Green stated "The warmest October and November on record have made autumn trading much tougher," he said. "Winter goods are tough."

Arcadia, which also owns the Top man,, Dorothy Perkins, Miss Selfridge, Wallis and Evans brands, had encountered "very challenging conditions both in the UK and around the world" during the year, with like-for-like sales finishing down 1.8%. That figure has worsened to 4.4% in the first 12 weeks of the new financial year.

stronger retailers like Topshop are faced with rising supply costs at a time when shoppers are demanding lower prices.
