• Description:In recent studies, it was shown that parameter estimation methods based on a sparserepresentation of the sensor measurements with an overcomplete basis composed of samplesfrom the array manifold is an effective approach that allows for high resolution capabilities. Thesparsity is enforced by imposing penalties based on the 1-norm. However, the estimation errorscan be further reduced through a weighted regularization, which will be investigated in thisresearch project.

• Description:The SECSI framework calculates an approximation of the CP decomposition based on simultaneous matrixdiagonalization. Moreover, the SECSI framework calculates multiple solution in order to select the best infinal solution. The different solutions are independent from one another and therefore this process couldparalyzed resulting in parallel implementation of the framework.

• Description:Tensor based processing of EEG data is becoming more and more popular topic. In this project we wouldlike to extend the well known processing techniques by using different tensor decomposition, such as theCoupled CP decomposition and the (L,L,1) decomposition. These decomposition is expected to provideenhanced results compared to the conventional CP decomposition, because they are more suitable as adata model for EEG data.

• Description:Due to shortcomings of OFDM such as high spectral leakage and strict synchronization requirements, several new multi-carrier transmission techniques such as Filter Bank Multi-Carrier (FBMC), Universal Filtered Multi-Carrier (UFMC), and Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) are being proposed as alternatives to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) for 5G. These new waveforms have more relaxed requirements. In this work, we are interested in investigating the multi user pecoding and decoding techniques for UFMC.

• Description:

The NS-IDIEM and IDIEM algorithm is a closed form solution to the simultaneous matrix diagonalization problem. As a first step of this project the existing algorithm should be implemented in Matlab. Then the existing algorithms should be extended to a coupled problem, when two sets of matrices have at least one diagonalizer in common.

• Description:In OFDM based systems, the symbols are separated by guard intervals which are usually implemented bycyclic prefixes (CP). CP is a random sequence and is solely created in time domain by copying the lastpart of the output of IDFT. Instead of using a random sequence as CP, a known deterministic sequencecalled as unique word (UW) can be used which, in result, can be very helpful for channel estimation andsynchronization. Therefore, such UW systems does not require dedicated pilot carriers as compared tosystems using CP. In [1], two different methods are introduced to construct UW-OFDM. In this project, wewill investigate the performance of MIMO UW-OFDM with iterative equalization techniques such turbodetection.

• Description:Visible light communication (VLC) is a technology with enormous potential for wide range of applicationswithin next generation transmission and broadcasting technologies. Despite many advantages, the mainchallenge in VLC systems to date has been in improving data rates while considering the low bandwidthsof the commercial LED devices. Many advance modulation schemes such as block transmission withfrequency domain equalization, discrete multi-tone transmission (DMT), and carrier less amplitude andphase (CAP) have been suggested for VLC. Moreover, equalization also plays a vital role in improving thespectral efficiency of VLC systems. In this work, we will investigate the performance of PAM blocktransmission with fractionally-spaced decision feedback equalization and will compare it with the otherschemes in indoor multipath environment.

DescriptionThe large absolute bandwidth of the millimeter wave channels may lead to a phenomena that different frequencies along the channel bandwidth are effected differently from multiple interacting objects in the environment. Spectral efficiency analysis of measured millimeter wave wireless channels

DescriptionMillimeter wave (mmwave) wireless channels have the potential to provide 1000x increase in the data rate of the current wireless systems. Therefore, mmwave communication is considered as one of the promising candidate technologies for future 5G communication systems. The focus of this research project is to investigate the spectral efficiency of measured millimeter wave channels..

Tasks Identify the number of effective scatterers in the channels. Estimate the fading envelop distribution of the channel. Compute the channel spectral efficiency using the fading envelop.

• Description:One of the latest and promising methods for localization of wireless nodes is so called Mobile Anchor (UAV in our

case) Assisted Localization (MAAL). This method employs one or multiple mobile anchors, equipped with GPS

units, traversing certain area and periodically sending their location information. This information is then used to

help unknown nodes with localization.

Current literature proposes many MAAL algorithms. In this work a disaster scenario is considered which puts

certain constraints on the accuracy and speed of localization. As a consequence, suitable three-dimensional

position calculation algorithms should be researched and implemented, in order to achieve a trade off between

high localization accuracy and computational complexity.

• Description:One of the latest and promising methods for localization of wireless nodes is so called Mobile Anchor (UAV in our

case) Assisted Localization (MAAL). This method employs one or multiple mobile anchors, equipped with GPS units,

traversing certain area and periodically sending their location information. This information is then used to help

unknown nodes with localization.

It is a well known fact that a careful design of mobile anchors movement trajectory not only improves localization

accuracy, but also reduces total travel time and energy consumption. The main task of this project is to develop

suitable 3D path planning algorithms for UAV which improve localization accuracy.

• Tasks– Literature study on current path planning algorithms (both static and dynamic)

– Implementation of chosen algorithms in Python based simulator

– Analysis and comparison of simulation results based on loc. accuracy, total path length, etc.

• Description:In the field of UAV assisted localization mainly two types of path planning algorithms exist – static and dynamic. Static algorithms are planned beforehand and are suitable mostly for uniform distribution of unknown nodes. As in outdoor scenarios, sensor nodes may be deployed randomly or in clusters, dynamic trajectory makes full use of real-time information. As a consequence, it can adapt to the observable environments and/or distribution of nodes.

Both types of trajectories have their pros and cons. Thus, the aim of this project is to develop a hybrid trajectory, which would combine the advantages of both static and dynamic path planning algorithms. The main idea is to have robust and fast path planning algorithm, with the help of which a UAV can traverse an area of interest and localize most of the unknown nodes in a shortest time and with acceptable localization accuracy.

• Tasks– Literature study on existing static and dynamic path planning algorithms

– Development of new hybrid approach (with the help of supervisor)

– Implementation and analysis of hybrid trajectory in Python simulator

– Comparison of existing approaches with a developed hybrid one (optional)

• Description:Finding physical location of wireless nodes is a critical task, since it provides support for many location-aware protocols and applications. The problem of localization is a multidimensional optimization task, as the resulting accuracy depends on many factors. In the case of a UAV assisted localization, localization accuracy depends on chosen signal propagation model (e.g., transmission power, wall attenuation factor), chosen trajectory (e.g., resolution, number of beacons, degree of collinearity), position calculation algorithm etc. Also, the target goal is not always high localization accuracy. Some tasks require fast and rough localization or there could be a certain threshold on what is the number of wireless nodes that should be localized.

Thus, in order to achieve certain goal too many factors could be altered. DescriptionTraditionally, routing is done on layer 3 of the OSI-Reference model based on IP-Addresses. With new networking paradigms for mesh or overlay networks, routing protocols is applied to further layers as well. This results in potentially redundant combinations of network functions. The goal of this project is therefore to evaluate the impact of various combinations of routing approaches using OMNeT++. The focus should be on interaction of the protocols at different layers.

DescriptionTraditionally, the poisson distribution is used to model voice traffic arrival rates in communication systems. OMNeT++ provides a module to generate poisson distributed traffic. The goal of this project is therefore to model first responder voice communication via poisson distributions and verify the feasibility of the developed model via simulations in OMNeT++.

DescriptionVehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) communication is necessary to ensure pedestrians' safety. Pedestrians' presence must becommunicated in advance to allow sufficient time for the driver to react irrespectively of varying vehicle/pedestriandensities. The goal of this project is to measure the Time-to-Collision (or vehicle's distance from intersection) for varyingvehicle and pedestrian densities and different periodicity of the pedestrian’s safety message. An urban LOS/NLOSintersection scenario shall be simulated with varying vehicle and pedestrian densities. This scenario shall be used toevaluate impact on Time-to-Collision (TTC).

Tasks Literature survey on V2P communication, medium access schemes and crash scenarios. Design and simulate urban intersection scenarios with different vehicle/pedestrian densities using OMNeT++ & Veins. Implement mechanism to measure TTC. Evaluate the impact of different densities and periodicities on TTC and of different medium access schemes.

• Description:Dynamic binaural synthesis has become a popular tool for the interactive reproduction of spatial sound scenes. So far, only the tracking of head rotation is common. For a convincing audio experience, it might be of interest to take small position changes into account.In this project, a prototype of such an adaptation has to be implemented.
