3.4 BASIC AUTO PILOT FUNCTIONS
With the Basic AP funcitions it is possible for the auto pilot to maintain the selected pitch androll angles of the aircraft.• When the AP is engaged, the basic AP modes become active (pitch hold, roll hold, heading
hold).• All FD modes can be coupled to the AP (IAS, VS, ALT, ALT SEL, LNAV, VNAV, APP, BC,
HDG SEL).• In FD mode without AP, it is not possible to have the basic vertical and lateral modes
together. At least one FD mode must be engaged.• The Yaw Damper is automatically engaged when the AP switch is switched on.
3.4.1 Basic Vertical AP Mode (PITCH HOLD)
With the PITCH HOLD mode the AP maintains the pitch angle of the aircraft.
To activate:• Engage the AP switch on the
CEU. (PITCH HOLD is the defaultvertical mode when the Autopilot isengaged.)
• The PITCH HOLD angle of theaircraft (selection limited to ± 20°pitch) can be modified by:→ Moving the thumbwheel on the
CEU up or down (as shown on figure), or by→ using TCS. (See section 3.4.6)
Expected System Behaviour:• The value of the aircraft pitch at the moment of mode engagement becomes the target
PITCH HOLD value and is displayed in the FMA (1° resolution).• The FD guidance bars will be visible on the EADI (Electronic Attitude Director Indicator).
Limitations:• With AP/FD engagement, the pitch angle must be within ±20°• The AP disengages outside ±22° pitch• The FD disengages outside ±25° pitch• The TOPDECK system does not control
the aircraft throttle.
Note:• All upper vertical modes revert to this basic
vertical mode (PITCH HOLD) when they disengage.

3.4.2 Basic Lateral AP Modes (ROLL HOLD, WINGS LEVEL and HEADING HOLD)
With these modes the TOPDECK AP maintains the selected roll angle of the aircraft when it isin ROLL HOLD and WING LEVEL mode, or the current heading in HEADING HOLD mode.
To activate:• Fly the aircraft manually at the required
roll angle.• Engage the AP switch on the CEU.• The roll angle (and therefor the basic
AP lateral submode) of the aircraftcan be modified by:→ Turning the TURN knob on the
CEU and then releasing it whenthe FD guidance bars on the EADI (Electronic Attitude Director Indicator) reach therequired angle, or by
→ using TCS. (See section 3.4.6)
Expected System Behaviour:• The roll angle at the time of AP/FD engagement will be used as the target roll angle (if it is
between ±6° and ±30°, e.g. -12° or +23° - see Limitations)• For roll angles within ±6° at AP/FD engagement, the target angle will be 0° roll.• ROLL HOLD and WINGS LEVEL are the default vertical modes when the Autopilot is
engaged, depending on the aircraft roll angle at the moment of engagement.• The FD guidance bars will be visible on the EADI.
The basic lateral mode is composedof three submodes:• "ROLL HOLD" submode, which consists of
holding a roll angle target. It is selectedwhen the Roll Angle > ±6° and < ±30° atengagement of the mode.
• "WING LVL" submode, which commands theA/C to a 0° bank angle. It is selected whenthe Roll Angle < ±6° at engagement of themode.
• "HEADING HOLD" mode, which is a specialcase of the WING LVL mode and consistsof holding the actual heading. It isselected automatically when the bankangle is less than 3° for more than 10seconds in WINGS LEVEL mode.
Limitations:• With AP/FD engagement, the roll angle must be within ±30°• The AP disengages outside ±35° roll.• The FD disengages outside ±60° roll.• The TOPDECK system does not control the aircraft throttle.

3.4.3 Yaw Damper Mode
With the Yaw Damper mode the TOPDECK system controls the YAW controlling interface ofthe aircraft to ensure co-ordinated turns.
To activate:• Engage the YAW switch on the CEU.
Expected System Behaviour:• TOPDECK will ensure co-ordinated
turns of the aircraft.
Note:• It is possible to engage the YAW
damper without engaging the AP, butit is not possible to engage the APwithout the YAW damper because ofthe mechanics of the switches.

3.4.4 Auto Pitch Trim
With the Auto Pitch Trim function it is not necessary to trim the aircraft pitch manually.
To activate:• The Autotrim option must be selected
on the central pedestal of the aircraft.• The Auto Pitch Trim is automatically
activated whenever the AP isactivated and TCS is not active.
Expected System Behaviour:• The manual pitch trim setting will be ignored when the autopilot is engaged, except when the
manual pitch trim setting is changed by the aircrew, in which case it will cause thedisengagement of the AP (and consequently the Auto Pitch Trim function).
• When ’MISTRIM’ information messagesare displayed, the crew shouldanticipate a force on control column atAP disengagement and then take actionas the information message suggested.(MISTRIM message privides a status, not a command.)
• MISTRIM messages does not cause AP disengagement when a slight mistrim occurs. Whensubstantial mistrim occurs, the AP will disengage automatically.
Failure:• In case of a trim failure, the AP
disengages.• Trim failure can be detected when:
→ Out of trim condition for more thanacceptable time
→ TRIM command discrepancybetween autopilot command and monitor channels.
• AP engagement is inhibited as long as theAP PITCH/TRIM FAILure remains.(Inhibit message visible for 5 sec.)

3.4.5 AP/YD and FD Engagement conditions
On ground:• AP/YD can be engaged on ground for check test purpose only when ground speed < 30 kts.
(The ground speed is coming from the selected FMS.)• FD can be engaged on ground, without speed limitation.
In Air:• FD operation is always allowed.• AP engagement is not allowed for 15
seconds just after take-off.• AP engagement will be inhibited when
an AFCS external failure conditionexists. When an attempt is made toengage the AP, a inhibit message willbe displayed for 5 seconds.
• When AP is engaged, the defaulthorizontal mode is WING LVL (aircraftroll angle < ±6° at engagement) andthe default vertical mode is PITCHHOLD.
3.4.6 Changing targets without disengaging Auto Pilot (Tactile Control Steering)
With the TCS function it is possible to manually control the aircraft without disengaging thecurrently engaged AP or FD mode(s).
To activate:• Press and hold the TCS button on the steering column of either the pilot or co-pilot.• Fly the aircraft manually while pressing the TCS button.• Release TCS button to return to AP.
Expected System Behaviour:• When the TCS button is pressed, the AP will stop controlling the aircraft.• When the TCS button is released, the autopilot (or FD when autopilot was not engaged
before pressing the button) will→ follow the new references for the following AP modes: HDG HOLD, IAS, VS and ALT
HOLD, or→ return to the previous selected datum for the AP modes: VOR/TACAN Navigation,
LOC, BC, FMS Navigation, ALT SEL, HDG SEL and GA.

3.10.2 Types of air traffic/threat situations
• Resolution Advisory (RA): Air traffic with a flight path that has a high probability of collisionwith your own aircraft is classified as a Resolution Advisory situation. A RA recommends avertical speed strategy to provide appropriate vertical separation from the threateningintruder.
• Traffic Advisory (TA): Air traffic with a flight path that might develop in a possible collisionsituation with your own aircraft is classified as a Traffic Advisory situation. A TA callsattention to a developing collision threat.
• Proximate Traffic (PT): Non-threatening, air traffic closer than 6 Nm are classified asProximate Traffic.
• Other Traffic (OT): All other detected air traffic not designated RA/TA/PT will be classified asOther Traffic.
• No Bearing Advisory: When no bearing information (position relative to your own aircraft) ofa RA or TA intruder is available, they are displayed in the No Bearing Advisory Field.
3.10.3 Other TCAS messages/options
StatusIn the top middle of the ND, different status messages can be displayed.• TCAS FAIL indicates a TCAS failure.• TCAS TEST indicates that a TCAS self test are being performed.• TCAS STBY indicates that TCAS is in standby mode. No TCAS advisories are displayed.• TCAS TA ONLY indicates that TCAS will send all RA (Resolution Advisories) to the display as
TA (Traffic Advisories).• TCAS indicates that TCAS is active in TA/RA mode (the normal operational mode).• the ABV (above) option enables the display of tracked traffic from 2700 ft below the own A/C
to a maximum of 9900 ft above the own A/C,• the BLW (below) option enables the display of tracked traffic from 9900 ft below the own A/C
to a maximum of 2700 ft above the own A/C,• the ABS option enables to display the absolute corrected altitude instead of the relative
altitude for all the intruders (Active only when no RA or TA is detected).
Range• In the AUTO mode (default), intruders classified as PT or OT will only be displayed when a
RA or a TA situation exists.• The TCAS Inner Range Ring always has a radius of 2Nm in any range setting, and will be
displayed in the 5 Nm and 10 Nm range.• When an intruder is outside the selected display range, it is displayed at the edge of the HSI
dial scale with about one half of the symbol obscured.• Up to 30 intruders will be displayed on the ND.

6.3 SOURCE SELECTION AND REVERSION
The AFCS, FMS and EFIS manage primary source selection according to the following rules:
- if the ADU or AHRS reversion switches are set to both on 1 or both on 2, AFCS, FMS and EFISwill use the selected source for their own computation and displaying;
- if the ADU or AHRS reversion switch is set to normal:→ PFDs and NDs will use own side sensor even if data are not valid (for example ADU1
selection for pilot PFD and ADU2 selection for co-pilot PFD),→ FMSs will use own side sensor if data is valid and opposite side sensor if own side data are
not valid,→ AFCS will use the HSI side primary sensor (FGCP selection): if left HSI is coupled, ADU1 and
AHRS1 sensors are used; if right HSI is coupled, ADU2 and AHRS2 sensors are used. Incase of failure of the selected sensor, FD mode using failed data are disabled.
On the MCDUs, the used sensors are identified by an "*" on the HDG/ATT page and displayed as"ADU1" or "ADU2" on the AIR/RA page (DATA VOLUME).
On the EFIS, the sensor source is not displayed when in normal configuration. When in both on 1 orboth on 2 configuration a selection reminder is displayed.
The navigation sensors (VOR, TACAN and FMS) are selected using the FGCP. If the navigationsource is not set to FMS1 or FMS2, the ND will use FMS data coming from the own side FMS if validand opposite side FMS otherwise (for example if left nav source is TAC, the pilot ND will use datacoming from the FMS1 if valid, FMS2 otherwise).
6.4 FAILURE AND REVERSION MANAGEMENT
In case of PFD failure, the PFD image can be displayed on the ND by setting the PFD brightnessknob of the EFCP to the OFF position. The ND image is then no longer available on the ND display. If the PFD is switched on again, and if it detects that fatal failure has occurred before switch off, thepower-on self-tests will be performed. If the PFD becomes healthy, the PFD image will be availableagain and the ND will revert to the normal ND display. At power-on, if the ND is powered before thePFD, it will display a PFD image at the end of its own self-tests. A ND image will be displayed only atthe end of the PFD self tests.
In case of ND failure, no manual or automatic reconfiguration can be performed.
In case of one equipment failure (ADU1 or 2, AHRS1 or 2), the associated symbols are notdisplayed and the appropriate warning messages are displayed (see description in paragraph 3.4).The crew can use reversion switch (located on the pedestal) to disable the failed source and toselect the same source for both pilot and co-pilot sides.

In case of ADU reversion, the barometric setting will be controlled by the ICP which is on theselected side (ICP1 when "BOTH ON 1" and ICP2 when "BOTH ON 2").
The same reversion capability as for ADU/AHRS is provided for the radio altimeter (in case of dualconfiguration): both on 1, normal, both on 2 selection can be performed.
In case of failure of the 1553 bus controller, adequate warning is provided in the RMS messagevolume ; a reversion switch located in the cockpit enables to perform a reversion on the remainingvalid IOP.
