It is aimed to be a detailed ranking exercise for top Engineering & MBA Institutes in India. Jagran Josh in association with TNS Global – one of the largest research agencies in the world, have presented Institute Ranking 2017 – under which government and private educational (Engineering and MBA) institutes have been surveyed and ranked based on certain key criteria and across different categories.

Institute Ranking 2017 has been launched to evaluate MBA and Engineering Institutes in the country based upon verifiable, objective data. Developed with an intention to promote excellence in professional higher education institutes in a competitive environment; the exercise will look into different aspects ranging from academic prowess to student as well as the industry perception about different MBA and Engineering colleges in India. A key highlight of Institute Ranking 2017 would be the inclusion of student & corporate perception about top private institutes of India, which is often ignored by others.

What is Institute Ranking 2017?

The majority of Ranking Surveys done educational institutions are data centric, only covering objective aspects related to MBA and engineering colleges. This resulted in the lacuna of a holistic ranking framework that assesses both objective and subjective aspects of higher education institutes offering MBA and engineering programmes.

Simply put, in Institute Ranking 2017, we have spearheaded the ranking exercise with factual data which is objective in nature and backed it up with students and industry perception which forms the subjective aspects of the exercise.

What is Institute Ranking 2017?

The Jagran Josh - TNS ‘Institute Ranking 2017’ survey was done in three phases. The objective of the study was to identify and rank top MBA and Engineering Institutes of India.

In this phase, an exhaustive brainstorming and desk research was done jointly, by Jagran Josh and TNS to build the initial list of top 250 institutes each for MBA and Engineering domains in the country. For MBA, only those institutes were selected which offered a two-year full-time management course with necessary accreditations; whereas for Engineering, institutes offering four-year full-time B.Tech programmes were shortlisted. The popularity and reputation of these institutes were also considered for the short listing exercise. The final selection of institutes was done in consultation with experts.


Phase 1- Identification of Institutes

In this phase, desk research was conducted to collect information on pre-identified indicators. Factual information on different parameters was collected for these 500 institutes from different sources. Various secondary sources like institute website, AICTE website, Reports of HRD Ministry, etc were used to compile a complete set of factual information on following parameters:

On the basis of factual data collected as per above parameters, an initial ranking score was provided to all institutes shortlisted in the Phase – 1. Of the initial list, 120 top MBA and Engineering colleges were picked on the basis of the initial ranking score for phase 3 i.e. perception study. The research team from TNS carried out the validation exercise for collected data. Field visits were also conducted to check the veracity of the information. The list of recruiters who visited these institutes for campus recruitment was developed for Phase 3.

The institutes and the recruiter companies short-listed in phase 2 were approached by the TNS team for the survey. For the perception survey, face-to-face interviews were done with the students. HR heads/managers of identified companies were contacted over e-mail / phone to provide feedback using survey link.

The students were asked to provide feedback on below parameters for their own institute and other two known/ familiar institutes (10 Point scale)

The total score of any institute is, therefore, dependent on the number of students selecting it as their own or familiar institute as well as the ratings that are given on each of the parameters.

The recruiters were asked to provide feedback on below parameters for institutes where they have experience of conducting campus hiring activities. (10 Point scale)

• Overall reputation / Brand image • Admission system (which ensures the best get through) • Knowledge / intellectual capital of students • Curriculum relevant to industry • Industry exposure of students

• Alumni strength and networking • Quality of Industry interface (Institute Vs. Industry) • Soft skills of students like communication skill / positive attitude etc. • Overall quality of the students



The total score of any institute is, therefore, dependent on the number of recruiters selecting it the institute as well as the ratings that are given on each of the parameters.

The data of Phase 2 and 3 (factual information, students’ perception and recruiters’ perception) was analyzed to arrive at the overall ranking of the institute. The final score of each institute was derived as the weighted sum of the three elements:
