NEED OF RANKING LAW SCHOOL
In view of the increasing number of institutes imparting law education in India and lack of information in the public domain including quality standards being followed; the assessment of law institutes is indeed cumbersome. Still it is an interesting exercise. The Bar Council of India states, the country has over 1200 law institutes
(up from 800 in 2011) but has extremely limited resources to assess the performance. The lack of resources is largely in terms of members for inspecting the new and exist-ing Law Schools and availability of funds. Post scrutiny of available data, we went through the methodology of INPUT-PROCESS-OUTPUT to arrive at broad parameters.

based on Research, Alumni and Goodwill.
How was it done?The first step was to shortlist the institutes
that impart law programme(s) at the under-
graduate level such as 5-year integrated
BA/BBA/BCom/BSc with LLB and also
3-year LLB. This was done on the basis
of two factors: one to select all such insti-
tutes that have been rated best by reputed
magazines/agencies inthe last three years
– this gave us 52 institutes. The second
exercise went beyond these 52 to include
those which were preferred by students
in the respective region/state assessed
through cut-off scores (where available),
popularity on Careers360 portal and
inputs from law institutes across different
regions. We also included those that par-
ticipated in the Careers360 ranking survey
advertised in November 2014. Informa-
tion was also accessed from the official
websites, Annual Reports and through
RTI applications. The total institutes thus
available for preliminary evaluation was
107. The next step involved screening of
institutes that had inadequate information
on different parameters as given in Table
1. A majority of institutes were weeded
out if they did not have information. A key
eliminator turned out to be the publica-
tion count where we excluded those that
did not have a single paper in any of the
460-odd law journals out of over 20,000
reputed journals indexed in Elsevier’s Sco-
pus database over 5 years. The research
output score was arrived at by looking
at the publication count (2010-2014),
citation, citation per paper and h-index.
We thus list out Careers360’s first
Indian Law School Ranking comprising
30 Law Schools, which includes 20 in
public and 10 in the private domain.
