Connection OptionsUnderstanding how to connect your iPad to a projector or computer is an integral part of using your iPad in the classroom . While the iPad is a personal device, being able to display the work from an iPad to a class allows the teacher to share the vast resources with their entire class .

You also have the ability to connect your iPad to your computer and control your computer like a virtual mouse . Teachers love this because it frees them from standing at the front of their room in order to touch their interactive whiteboard or operate their computer .

If you are trying to display the image of your iPad to your class, you must be aware of the best options available to you .

WiredThe easiest way to display image to students is to simply plug my iPad into a projector using an adapter that connects the iPad to a VGA, HDMI, or other projector input . This method is so easy because it only requires the adaptor and no other IT support . This allows you to display an image onto a large screen, interactive whiteboard or any other display . This leaves the teacher tethered to the projector without the ability to walk around the classroom with the iPad . A common question is, “If my iPad is projected onto my SMART Board or IWB, will I be able the touch it to control my iPad?” This method only connects the iPad to the projector, you will not be able to touch the interactive whiteboard to control it .

WirelessTeachers like the ability to move around their classroom while displaying their iPad to students at the front of the room . The iPad’s AirPlay feature allows you to wirelessly send the image on the iPad to a projector or computer . This gives them the ability to be close to students neededing help without having to run back to their iPad to interact with it . The iPad is a mobile device, so teachers naturally want to be able to move around with it . Displaying student work also becomes easier . Instead of a student having to get out of their seat and connect to the adapter, they can simply AirPlay their iPad’s image to the front of the room

without leaving their seat .

AirPlay requires a piece of hardware connected to a projector as well as some IT support from your school . Here are the most popular AirPlay options .

Apple TVApple TV is a small black box that connects to a projector or TV via an HDMI cable . The Apple TV module is placed on the school wired or wireless network that is the same network the iPad uses in the classroom . The iPad can then connect with the Apple TV and share its screen . Apple TV even has a passcode feature that requires the person trying to connect with the Apple TV to use a code before mirroring the display . This is a great feature to stop students from mirroring their iPad’s image whenever they want, allowing the teacher to control what is displayed to the class .

Reflector/AirServeBoth of these are software packages installed on your computer . They work like Apple TV . When the software is running, the iPad recognizes the AirPlay network and will show the image on your display . Both the iPad and the computer must be on the same network, and these solutions require some IT support . Each allows for a passcode to be required when attempting to mirrior the iPad . One of the best features is the ability to record what is hapenning on the iPad and save a video file to the computer . This is a very powerful option when creating blended learning or flipped classroom videos for students .

Remote DesktopSimply put, this means your iPad actually turns into your computer and gives you control over your computer, like using a remote control . The iPad’s screen will look like your computer's screen, and you will be able to access all of the files and applications like you were sitting at your computer . This requires IT support and both apps running on your iPad and installed on your computer .

SplashtopThis is one of the most widely-used ways to control your computer with an iPad . Splashtop is a combination paid app for your iPad(it costs up to $10), and free software to install on your computer, called Splashtop Streamer . Splashtop Streamer must be running on your computer and can be accessed via the Splashtop app on the iPad . You will see your computer screen on your iPad and have full control over your computer . Both the iPad and the computer must be on the same network to see each other unless you purchase a premium Splashtop subscription . Splashtop even has a screencasting feature that allows you to record the work you are doing on the computer and save as a video on the iPad .

DoceriAlso an app on the iPad with a related software for the computer . The app is free and acts as a screencasting or whiteboard app by itself, but, when paired with the paid software, for the computer turns into a remote desktop that allows you to control your computer from a distance . It also has a very easy-to-use screencasting feature with a variety of tools that allow you to annotate and record blended learning or flipped classroom videos .

CitrixA web service and iPad app that gives you remote control of your computer regardless of whether you are on the same network or not . This typically requires much more IT support than the other options .

Ask3 Ask3 uses the classroom management strategy of "Ask 3 before Me" in an app to foster student collaboration . The concept is simple, instead of students asking the question to the teacher, they are encouraged to ask fellow students first . To do this, Ask3 uses collaborative screen casting . In other words, teachers and students are able to post recordings of their actions annotating on a whiteboard screen, adding images or voice to the rest of their class . Each member of the class can post their own screencast and "comment" on other people's screencast by viewing them in the app Bulletin Board . The comments can be screen recordings themselves or simply text . The comments will also appear along the bottom of the original screencast in timeline form . Any member of the class can view comments by simply clicking on the timeline .

Example A teacher has been giving a lesson on symbolism and propaganda in early 20th century American

political cartoons . To foster discussion, the teacher would add the cartoon to their app and record questions for to the students . Once the teacher is done, they will upload the screen cast and it becomes available on the classroom Bulletin Board . Students then are able to record their own responses, using arrows and drawing tools to accentuate the parts of the political cartoon they are speaking about as they identify the symbolism in the cartoon . After the comment is completed, it is posted to the timeline underneath the teacher's original screencast for all students and the teacher to review .

Baiboard Baibord is a collaborative whiteboard space that multiple users can access, view, and edit . There are a variety of useful tools, including text, drawing, adding images, and adding documents . The feature that makes Baidbord different from other whiteboard spaces is the ability to annotate simultaneously with other users . One user must create a “room”, and share the room code via email (or other options built into the application) . People joining the room do not need to be on the same network, and could even be half-way around the world . The creator of the room has the ability to make the room “view only”, so people joining the room can watch on their individual iPads, but not interact with the whiteboard space . This feature is extremely useful for teachers who want to present to their students without having students interact with the presentation . The room even comes with a chat area where students can type or leave an audio comment that will be sent to other students and the teacher inside of the Baibord room . Of course, one the the most important features of any iPad app, including Baiboard, is the ability to “Share” or “export” the created work as a PDF or image to the iPad Camera roll . Students have the ability to collaborate on creating documents or assignments, and easily share their work with their peers and the teacher .

ExampleThe teacher can use Baiboard to present material from their iPad to individual student iPads, so everyone can see the content . The teacher can propse questions to students, like plotting points of an equation onto a graph . The teacher can give control to the students to interact with Baiboard to answer the question, while all members of the room can view the interactions in real time .

LoopsterLoopster is a free, easy-to-use HD video editing app which allows you to combine photos, videos, text, transitions, and music into a video presentation . Students have the option to add there own audio using the built-in microphone on the iPad . Any project can be easily saved to your camera roll to be used in other apps .

Example Students can create digital video presentations reviewing concepts they have

learned . Students can script what they want to present, shoot the video with their iPad cameras, edit the materials to organize their thoughts, and share the presentation by opening the saved video in another application, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, or Edmodo .

Evidence for LearningImagine being able to walk around your classroom and take pictures of your students' work, then attach those pictures to a Common Core Standard (or customized goal/objective) . Evidence for Learning does just that! Being able to collect information from student work and organize the data for specific objectives is a powerful tool for teachers to analyze student progress in the classroom . This is an excellent app for when only the teacher has an iPad in the classroom, allowing them to snap pictures of student work, organize the evidence and generate reports based on student, standard, class, or specific objective .

Teq Resources: www.teq.com/blog/2013/05/gathering-evidence-for-learning-theres-an-app-for-that/

ExampleA Teacher in a High School Math classroom who has a single iPad, with no student access to iPads, is doing an activity based on a Graphing Functions (Common Core Goal (HSF .IF .4)) . The teacher has created worksheets for students, using graph paper, and with functions for the students to interpret and graph . As the students finish their work, instead of collecting and holding onto mountains of paper, the teacher simply snaps a picture from inside the Evidence for Learning app and attaches it to the student's profile with the related standard . The teacher can then run a report and email the evidence, along with any comments or feedback, to themselves, administrators, students, or even parents .

Tiny Tap TinyTap is an app that allows teachers and students to create, share, and play interactive learning games . Tiny Tap’s easy-to-use interface makes creating and playing games enjoyable and educational . Tiny Tap has a complete market place where you can download games from the Tiny Tap team or from other users . This great feature allows you to see what other people are creating, and encourages users to share their own interactive Tiny Tap games . Although primarily designed for early grades, and special education students, games can be completely customized to fit almost any learning level!

ExampleAfter creating some engaging interactive games using the Tiny Tap App, set up iPads around your classroom as centers . Each center can be focused on one of the interactive games you built . As students bounce from center to center, they can complete the games inside of Tiny Tap, or, even better, create their own . To ensure students stay inside of the Tiny Tap app, use the Guided Access feature in iOS to "Lock" students inside the app so you know they can only be using Tiny Tap while unsupervised at the center .

ThinglinkImages are powerful ways of displaying information . The concept of visual communication is becoming increasingly important for anyone whose job it is to present information . That’s where apps like ThingLink come in .

Using ThingLink on the web is extremely easy . Start by creating a free account so your images can be stored and shared with others and so you can share images from the app on the iPad to your account . When using the app on the iPad, you’ll use images saved in your Photos or you can access the device’s camera to capture an image on the spot . Once the image is loaded, you can tap on any part of the image to create a tag . On the iPad, this is limited to either text or video . Tagging an image means that you’ll provide related information via links to websites or video sources as well as short amounts of text . Each time you create a tag, you’ll be prompted for a URL (if appropriate), a description, and an icon . Videos can be chosen from YouTube, your Photos, or you can capture video live . When all the tags are completed, the image can be posted to your online ThingLink account . Save the tag, then create as many more tags as are needed . You’ll be able to choose whether your work is shared publicly or kept private .

Whether the tagged images you create are public or private, you will always have the option of sharing them in various ways, including via web links or by using an embed code . The use of embed codes makes it possible for you to display a ThingLink image on a webpage or attached to a note or assignment in Edmodo .

ExamplePoster Boards have been a time-honored tradition for student presentations . Using Thinglink, students create media rich posters that come alive with videos, links and more .

• Understanding how events in history connect is important . Assign your students to find an image of one event that was impacted by another . Students can then tag the image with web or video resources (online) or with text and video (on the iPad) that support the connections they want to convey, or they can use text tags alone to provide supporting information .

• Take your iPad on a scavenger hunt with your youngest students . Snap photos of objects found around the school or the classroom, then have them tag the saved photos with words that have the same beginning letter sound .

• Using an image from the web that represents the learning for a unit (for example, the water cycle), students tag the image with text information, web links, and videos that will support the learning . Post your image to your class webpage or embed it in a note for your Edmodo group(s) .

• Ask your students to use the iPad to take images of other students being responsible citizens at school – helping each other, being courteous, playing well, etc . Students can tag the photo with text to tell what they observed .

• Ask students to select a vivid image from the web . Have them tag it with descriptive words, then create a poem using those words . As an alternative, have your students share the weblink for their ThingLink image, then allow them to choose from other students work to create a poem .

Aurasma Augmented reality is when images, 3-D models, videos and more are attached to objects and pictures to be interacted with in real world environments . Similar to QR codes, Aurasma is an app that scans pictures that are set up as "targets" containing some other information, like a video . Mainly used for advertising, Aurasma can make a picture “come alive ." Teachers and students can create their own "aurasmas" to make normal activities,—poster boards and stations in the classroom—come alive with videos . Aurasma can access your iPad’s camera roll, so any videos saved with the iPad can be attached to any picture or object . As others scan the object it will present them with the information attached . Aurasma has a social media application, where teachers

or students can post their Aurasmas publicly for others to find, or privtely where they are only available to people “following” the user . Download Aurasma today and point it at the back of a United States $1 bill . . .Prepare to have your mind blown .

Example• Teachers can create a “Wall of Knowledge” or take the classic “Word Wall” to the next level . By creating

screencasts or videos on the iPad and saving them to the camera roll, the teacher or student can then attach the video to a target, and place it in the classroom . As students need to learn content, like the formula for the Pythagorean Theorum or the defenition of a vocabulary word, they simply walk over to the “Wall of Knowledge” and scan the targets . A video will appear on the iPad showing the student the materials needed . This could be very useful for a teacher that is working in groups . Instead of students asking the teacher questions, they are able to discover their own .

• Imagine a student made a poster board about a volcano to present at a science fair . Other students and teachers can use their iPad to scan different parts of the poster to watch videos created by the student that go deeper into the information presented . This can be changed to any content for which a student is creating a poster board . More importantly, the video the student created must be researched, storyboarded, and scripted before they create the video, adding an important Common Core Literacy goal on informational text to any classroom project .

• Leaving Aurasma targets at activity stations around the classroom with video directions or learning materials for the students is an easy way to manage how students learn what is expected to them at each station .

ToontasticThe Toontastic app supports the writing process as students create a cartoon . A number of themes help to provide a variety of purposes for the writing . Students have the ability to add pictures of familiar settings, characters or even draw their own to be used in the cartoons . As the story is created, students, are taken through a story arc, including setup, conflict, challenge, climax, and resolution, and must complete each step of the arc in order to move on . After setting up each scene, the students can then record the actions of a character on the screen, as well as their own voice to make the scene come alive . Each scene is strung together to create a cartoon as the finished project . The cartoons are then shareable by a link that can be public, and searchable by others inside of Toontastic, or private, and only available to anyone who has been given the link . The best part of Toontastic is it makes storyboards and scripts come alive . Students must write out scenes and script out their story before they ever pick up the iPad . This turns a typical classroom activity for creative writing into the production of a fun, professional-looking cartoon .

ExampleHave the students create a story based on a situation they may encounter . For example, have students write how to make friends and avoid bullies in school . The topic is something that students may need to learn, and gives a fun spin on how to do it . The students can work in pairs or groups during classtime for multiple days, scripting and storyboarding before ever touching the iPad . After their script is approved by the teacher, then let them use the iPad to begin making their cartoon in ToonTastic . This is a great use of the iPad if there are not enough for every student to have their own . By having the students work in groups, you are turning the iPad into a collaborative device for multiple students to share, and not an individual device for one student to use . Also, by requireing approval on scripts, the student will really focus on the writing and literacy piece of the assignment .

SnapGuide Snapguide allows a teacher or student to create easy how-to guides on their iPhone or iPad and make them available through a web link . Snapguide uses text, images, and videos together in a slide-show-style guide . Teachers could create review guides for math problems, or have students create step-by-step guides outlining a science experiment . Having the students storyboard and script the guide enables the teacher to create an activity where students are writing out manuals which can be associated with one of the shifts in the Common Core Learning Standards . The ability to have students storyboard and explain something through a step-by-step process is an invaluable skill .

ExampleSnapguide can be used in so many ways in the classroom, from giving students directions, to complete projects for students . Imagine students doing an experiment for testing starch in different foods . Each step or slide of their Snapguide would be another step in the process of the experiment . Students could video their hypothosis and predictions as well as the actual steps of the experiment . At the end, the students can add a video conclusion to their guide . The guide can be shared by a URL and made public or private for others to search through the Snapguide website .

Newsy Are you boggled at the fact that many of your students are unaware of what is going on in the news? Do they complain to you that they don’t have the time to read the paper, or just simply get too overwhelmed by all of the text? Well, now you can tell them about the free app called Newsy .

Newsy is the only video news service that allows users to compare news sources from around the world to see how a story unfolds . Through short, engaging videos, Newsy accelerates your students' understanding of a news story, and delivers it when and how they want it . Newsy provides context with convenience—it’s a broader view, in a concise format, which is perfect for your more visual and auditory learners .

ExampleAnalyzing informational text and writing responses from sources are major components of the Common Core Standards . Newsy can easily lend itself to a variety of research and writing activities that support these Common Core Standards .

Provide each student with a Newsy story link and have them access the video on their mobile device . The student lists on a separate sheet of paper the who, where, when, what, and why of the story . Then the students’ papers are collected and redistributed so no student has his or her own sheet . Each student takes a look at their five “W”s list, and writes the opening paragraph of a news story based on that information . At the end of the activity, students share their stories and the original Newsy video story to see how they compare . How accurate were the students’ stories?

The Answer Pad The Answer Pad is a student response system that collects data and requires a minimal amount of prep time, while allowing for maximum data analysis . With both an iPad app and web interface (the app for Android is coming soon), the product is available to students using different devices . The interfaces are easy to use, making the app accessible to students of all ages . As you would expect from a response system, The Answer Pad allows teachers to conduct formative and summative assessments, create individual and group reports for analysis, and interact with students in real time for immediate feedback .

Example In a classroom with 1:1 iPads or a cart of iPads for all students to use, The Answer Pad becomes very useful . The teacher is able to ask prepared questions that can be tagged by Common Core standard, which allows for advanced data collection and formative assessment . The teacher then has the ability to look at data from questions aligned to specific objectives or standards, and see what concepts need to be reinforced in the classroom and student progress .

Remind 101Remind 101 allows you to create a text message number for messaging students and parents . Remind 101 is a free service and allows for only one way text messaging . To join, students will answer a text message . If parents do not want to be texted, they have the option to use email .

ExampleIn a secondary classroom, a teacher has a unit exam that the students must prepare for . To remind students and parents when the after school review is, they receive a text message from Remind 101 . Many students live on their mobile devices, and being able to reach them directly on their cell phones is very useful .
