REPort

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me. Elizabeth Thiel, our treasurer, and I attended the SCCA National Convention in Las Vegas Feb. 28 through March 2. I just returned from there, and had to go to Canada for a work related problem. Next weekend is the NEDiv convention in Pocono and I need to get ready for that.

I’m going to try to let you know what I saw at the convention. When I come back from the convention one thing always happens to me, I become enthused and want the region to become the best region in the nation. Oh, I need to point out the region won the Tom Burke Award for large regions. This award is given to the region with the most new members in each of the four size categories. I was honored to receive the award during Friday night happy hour. The Glen Region also was given this same award for their size category.

The convention started on Thursday with the annual meeting and town hall. During previous conventions there were people who would get up and express something that they felt the Board of Directors was doing right or wrong

(okay there were more wrong comments than right comments). I think the internet has made it easier for people to complain, so when we come to meetings there is less complaining now.

The meetings got started on Friday morning. There was a late addition to the schedule with an 8:00 AM registration meeting. During this meeting there was a lot of discussion about the differences between tracks on the east coast and the west coast. There was some discussion about membership when something I had mentioned to some people was discussed and overwhelming approved by registrars on both coasts. I recommended that all club race drivers be required to get an annual waiver. Now this is something that I’m sure a lot of drivers would not like, but it would make registration at the race track a lot quicker.

There was then a big meeting about membership. Historically in the past 10 or more years we have been having problems maintaining members. We would gain 10,000 members a year and lose 11,000 members a year. So this year we are going to change the focus of our membership, to membership retention. Along that line they are promoting an anthem…

THERE’S NOTHING ELSE LIKE IT.Nothing that comes close to

that pit in your gut that tells you – no, commands you – that it’s time to race. To be more than a spectator. To push the limits and breathe the scent of competition in the air.

Maybe you’re into more than the 9 to 5. Where hundredths of a second means the difference between a successful weekend and a frustrating ride home.

This isn’t Easy Street. This is our street, where America’s best amateurs race. Our drivers take on all comers – any track, any surface, any time – and

win. This is no Sunday drive; this is where 70 years of action attracts the finest competition. Not the bucket list-checkers or the risk-averse, but guys and gals like you.

If you long for the flag that welcomes or denies you, we have a spot for you. This is real racing. Where pits in your gut are replaced by the fragrances of pit lane.

There is a kindred spirit found here, mixed with emotion and adrenaline that turns fierce competitors into fast friends.

You’re driven. And we’re driven to provide the best motorsports experience in the world. Where stripes are worn on our hoods, and in our hearts.

WE ARE SCCA. DRIVE HERE.

The other meetings I went to where the RE’s & BOD, Risk Management, the Road Rally Town Hall, Solo Town Hall, Region Leadership Training and Membership Programs and Stats. Risk Management was interesting, we heard about the committee that worked on putting out the request for insurance proposal and coming up with a tremendous savings for the club. There was one interesting point, over 80% of the reported incidents are in the solo program and over 80% of the reported injuries are in the club racing program.

I will be reporting on the NEDIV Mini Con next month. There are some interesting things happening that affect the race program. This year is the last year for National Races and there is some discussion of what comes next. We are going to have a session to talk about the Majors program. The one big question is what will club racing look like next year and at this point we don’t know.

Editor’s BenchSeveral people have asked why the

March issue arrived in their mailbox in an envelope. The story is that the US PostOffice has changed the rules formailings of the kind Top End uses. They now require that the total issue be printed on 60 lb. paper (or heavier). The current issue uses 80 lb. for the cover and 20 for the interior pages. The heavier interior pages would increase both the printing and mailing cost. From a cost standpoint we are better off spending the money on envelopes. The return address is only aboutfive dollars extra. For that you,the reader, can see that it is not “trash” mail and we may get a few bad address returned.

The back page of Top End no longer needs to have an area for the mailing address; therefore the calendar has been moved to the back cover. That loses the area used for printing pictures, so only the front cover would be color. Going to black and white on the outer cover and using a lighter paper saves around a dollar an issue in printing and mailing costs.

National NewsSCCA Appoints Chris Berg to Public Relations PositionTOPEKA, Kan. (Feb. 20, 2013) – Sports Car Club of America, Inc. and SCCA Pro Racing have named Chris Berg to the newly-created Public Relations Coordinator position, serving roles in both organizations.

Berg will provide detailed event coverage and serve as the main point of contact for on-site media on behalf of SCCA Pro Racing at each Mazda MX-5 Cup and Pirelli World Challenge Championship race. Berg will also handle other assignments for SCCA’s Club Racing, Solo and Rally divisions.

Global Rallycross Falls Under SCCA Pro BannerLOS ANGELES (February 19, 2013) -

The mailing list has also been trimmed, with only one copy mailed to an address. Note: The option to read Top End online is available for those who do not want or need a paper copy. The online version will have full color and have street address, e-mail address and phone number information deleted for new members.

As you can see from this issue, no color, lighter cover paper, fewer copies printed and the possibility of fewer pages is our path forward. We also will make Elizabeth, our treasurer, happier.

If you would like to save paper and read the online version, send me an e-mail at [email protected] or catch me at a meeting.

Using the internet requires that the members e-mail address on filewiththe national office be correct.A largenumber are not correct – please logon to your information and verify that yours is correct!

Rally Meeting NotesMarch 12, 201396 Church Street, Victor, NY

These notes are grouped by subject, not in chronological order. (They are also limited to the failing memory of the recordist and to recorder failure. Care should be taken to not press the stop button.)

The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jamie Hayslip, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon and John Werner. Social, Summer and Fall Rallies

In addition to the charity rally run in conjunction with STPR® the possibility of a social rally in mid-summer and the traditional fall foliage tour were discussed. The current Finger Lakes Region’s calendar will be sent to those attending the meeting. The last RallyCross event in the Finger Lakes 2012-2013series was held Feb. 23. STPR®

The charity rally run as part of the Susquhannock Trail Performance Rally® weekend will be a sixty mile or less social event. It will also run Friday morning. Jerry Kerwin will contact Greg Lester about chairing the charity rally. Winter Rally Series

Results and a report for “WWR2013” will be printed in the April edition of Top End.

Several anecdotes occurring during the running of “WWR2013” were discussed. “Over crest, right at T” on a slick road was fortunate enough to have a farm drive going straight. Reverse gear wasn’t enough to slow the car to a comfortable speed. A snowplow on the road at the OMP needed to raise one “wing” to clear Charlie and Tony. Others managed to leave before the plow arrived. The roads ranged from dry to a little snow over ice. During the pre-rally course checks they ranged from hard to muddy to slippery slop.

Rick Barnes has written a rally for Mar. 23. “Slip Sliding Away‘13”willstartandendatCheapCharlie’sinBloomfield,withthefirstcaroffat4:31andarrivingatthefinisharound10:00. The pre-check is scheduled for Saturday Mar. 16. Miscellaneous Discussions

A suggestion was made that when stopped at a checkpoint,

the OMP or the end of a transit zone that the four-wayflashersbeturnedon.

A reminder – Time allowances for a leg should total a minimum of 0.5 in one minute increments to 19.5. Anything less than 0.5 should be a balk and needs to be observed within sight of the checkpoint. These and other regulations (including claims) are spelled out in the General Instructions.

Registrars at the rally events should not take new memberships, but provide forms and information to the applicant regarding the proper channel.

Ben reported on his planned drive of the Nurbergring. There are race car shops close that rent cars that can be driven on the track. Using a rental car could result in being permanently banned (WORLDWIDE) from the particular rental agency. The thought is that a slow car will be used to learn the track and a faster one later for the experience.

Thereisanidentifiabledifferencebetweenthedentleftbyahailstone and a ballpeen hammer. But does a car with the “golf ball” surface have less aero friction than a smooth and waxed car?

Jerry will check on the status of Curtis Braun. Again the meeting was devoid of any discussion of wiener

dogs and submarines. (Well almost!)

Cabin Fever Rally ReportFebruary 18, 2013Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kriesen

Perfection. That is what many of the Winter Road Rally competitors are striving for. To score zero time penalty points on a given leg of a Rally is bliss. Doing this (or coming close to doing this) consistently, over nearly 200 miles is a formidable challenge. If fact, there are so many variables to contend with and details to be considered that the challenge is often not in being perfect, but adapting to the conditions, and minimizing your mistakes.

It is with this same mentality that the Rally Masters (yours truly) approached organizing the 2013 Cabin Fever Rally. In the end, thirteen teams competed

and seven worker crews participated in the 187-mile challenge. While hardly flawless, the event was safe and fun with everyone finishing despite a few hiccups. For example, right at the start, one driver had a discussion with local authorities about proper use of his turn signal, fortunately with no consequence (right, Gary?). Also, the “Sweep” crew of Rick Barnes and Jason Kostyshak helped another team get unstuck from a slight off-road excursion. The event was further supported by our team of tireless checkpoint workers. This included Carl Dresie, Barb Lissow, Larry Wells, Paul Walker, Dave Avery, Sally Bossert, Alan Blood, Craig McMaster, Scott and Monica Grinnell. Last, but not least, Bob and Ryan VanSice worked a little extra but clearly had a lot of fun running the whole route, and manning three controls.

After the Rally dust settled and scoring

was complete, a few teams stood apart. Alan Smith and Eric Hobron showed only a hint oferror, postingfiveperfectzerolegsandsecured 1st place in Equipped class and 1st overall. Jeff and Steve Coppola backed up their win in Ithaca by placing 1st in Limited Class. Andrew Johnson and Matt West topped the Novice class. No one chose to compete in Stock class.

Honorable mentions go out to young navigator Anna Thiel who helped her driver (and father) Dan post a solid score of 103. Finally, the Endurance Award goes to Eric Salminen and Dennis Blevins who started the day very early by driving up from Maryland to compete. These guys were also thoughtful enough to bring a bottle of Maryland wine as thanks to the Rally Masters (which we greatly enjoyed Sunday night) as well as invite us down to run one of their DC region events (www.wdcr-scca.org).

WWR 2013 Rally ReportBy John Werner

On Saturday, March 9, 2013, teams of competitors from across the North East descended on The Yard of Ale in Piffard for the start of WWR-2013.

Five days before the event, the weather forecast looked very good. Temperatures were just below freezing with 4 to 8 inches of snow expected in the rally area.

Twodaysbefore the event, thefinalcheck showed conditions to be incredibly mixed. Temperatures were on an average just at the freezing mark. That meant that in some places it was wet, other places it was frozen, still other places were a slimy mud-slush, and a few others were even snow covered. It could be very interesting.EvenmyWRXwasfindinggetting through the mud-slush a bit of a challenge.

By the night of the event, the temperature had dropped into the 20s.

The promised snow had arrived, but not in the quantities hoped for.

The course of the rally ran from Piffard, westward toward Wyoming before dipping down through Warsaw. From Warsaw, it proceeded south west before looping back up past Attica to Alexander for the break.

From Alexander, the course headed slightly northward toward Batavia to make a small loop through some interesting roads along a small creek. On the Thursdayof thefinalcoursecheck, one

Page 12: Top End - April 2013

of the roads known forfloodingduringmeltingseasonalreadyhadtrafficconesset out in case it needed to be closed. Luckily, the course crossed itself just after a very early checkpoint in the second half, thus allowing the road to be bypassed if needed. It wasn't. The night of the event the road was still open and the water that had been running over it was gone. (If it hadn't been, it would have been a nice patch of ice!)

After clearing that section, the rally plunged southeast around the bottom of Silver Lake then along the Western edge of LetchworthStatepark.Thefinalsectionran pretty much straight back to Piffard with the last checkpoint being within 3 milesofthefinish.

Of the 16 planned checkpoints (including 2 radio controls), all 16 were scored.

Although the turnout for the event was very light (9 cars), all classes were represented. The one Novice team (Griff Jones and Christine Haka) put in a very respectablescorefortheirfirstevent, butthe most impressive score was that of the Stock class winners Jamie Hayslip and Gretchen Kreisen with a raw score of 37 and factored score of 41.81. That put them ahead of two Limited and two Unlimited teams!

The team of Coppola and Coppola also posted a very respectable 30 points tofinish2ndoverall.Ifithadnotbeenfor

the out of region, Limited duo of Penasack and Goldfarb, the Coppola's would have won, but the New England based team managed a 25 and took 1st place both in class and overall.

Special thanks needs to go out to the following people who helped work on this event: Beth Werner, Zach Werner, Tom and Deb Langdon, Jerry Kerwin, Larry Wells, Barb Lissow, Carl Dresie, Dave Avery, Bob VanSice, Alan Blood, Craig McMasters, Gail McGuire, Kurt Thiel, and Bill and Jennifer VanRemmen; and also to the Yard Of Ale and Canal House Inn for letting us start and end the event there.

What I did for the last one and a-half years (An update from my August 2011 biography)By A well-traveled Toyota Celica(As told to Mike Toombs)

It has been a couple of years since I firsttoldyouofmystoryintheAugust2011 issue of Top End and I thought I should bring you up to date. As you might remember Rich Smith had blown my transmission and was looking to send me to a new home. In my prior lives I had run Watkins Glen International, driven on every solo site in the northeast and run winter rallies. My fear was that I would end up in a wrecking yard or pieced out to be put in other Toyotas.

Well Rich was looking to do some work on one of his Honda’s (now you don’t want to get me going on Honda’s. How could someone want to spend time and money on a Honda when they have a work of art like me?), okay back to the

story, so Rich made a deal with Kurt Thiel and Kurt took me home.

I had high hopes when I got to Kurt’s place. It looked like Kurt was a car person who might do something with me. Well I got a little concerned when he started tearing stuff out of my interior. Mike and Craig had run me without some of the amenities I came out of the factory with, radio, cruise control and air conditioning. But Kurt pulled out the carpet, head liner, console, and sun roof. What is he doing? I had no idea, maybe I was wrong and he is going to cut me up. Then he started putting some metal tubing in, I admit whenhetouchedmewiththefirsttorchit stung a little, but then I thought that this must mean he has plans for me. So I gritted my teeth and put up with the pain as he made me a race car.

I had no major race ambitions, after all I was approaching my 27th birthday and I know the young kids have a lot of fancy race stuff that I don’t, but you know how much I love racing!

So after some work I became an ice racer.Okay,I’mreadyformyfirstroundofwheeltowheelracing, myfirstchanceto push my way past some of those other cars. Now we only need one more thing,

ice. Well I have to tell you, I’m not a big fan of global warming, or Mother Nature, or simply good weather, whatever you want to call it – I WANTED TO GO RACING!

So Kurt drove me down to Leicester, to a place they call Perry Park. Now I looked around and didn’t see either pavement or ice! So what is going on here?Wellcometofindoutthereisthissport called RallyCross. In RallyCross, cars compete one at a time (like I’m used to in Solo). Unlike Solo, the times for every run are all added up and that is your winning time. Well surprise-surprise, this was just as much fun as all of the other racing I have done. The one thing that I’m not used to having my front wheels turned one way and the car sliding the other. But boy, THIS IS FUN.

I’m turning 27 years old this year and still racing. I couldn’t have hoped for more. As long as I am able I plan on keep racing. This has been a great life and I’m going to keep pulling and turning as fast as I can until I fall apart. So the next time you see me please stop by, I’d love to show what it is like to be born to run! If I had a radio I’d end this story with the classic Bruce Springsteen song “Born To Run.”

Driving tips: 1. Eiserd’s secret to RoadRally: Stay on

course, don’t break down, zero every checkpoint and the rest will fall into place.

2. Contrary to the popular notion, the best way to dry off a freshly washed car is not with a 5th gear glory blast down a sudsy dark alley.

3. Regular maintenance is the key to reliability; irregular maintenance is the key to great exercise.

4. The 3-percent rule: If you want to go faster, compete with people who are 3-percent faster than you.

5. The other 3-percent rule: If you want to have fun, compete against people who are 3-percent slower than you.

6. You’vegottofinishtowin.Ofcourse, you’ve got to be fast to win too; otherwise everybody would be doing it.

7. There is no physical training regimen so strict that it can’t be undermined by a rigorous program of deferred maintenance.

8. There are old racers and there are bold racers, but there are no old, bold racers who don’t talk funny.

9. Patience is a virtue of many racers. Unfortunately, it’s also a virtue of a lot of losers.

10. The wise racer only pisses off the people he can beat.

11. The secret of successful race tuning is knowing when to start driving and stop tuning.

12.If you’re going to pray, pray for FACTORY intervention. Divine intervention isn’t much use, since the guy upstairs isn’t really all that up on the proper set-up.

13.Webb’s first law of sportsmanship:A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to let the air out of a competitor’s tire.

14. Never underestimate the power of good old-fashioned intimidation.

15. The race goes to the swift. But sometimes none of them show up, and the rest of us have a shot at it.
