7/28/2019 Top 7 Performance Reviews
1/3
We are now going into the 2nd week of myWAP Idol Season 4 and with seven
contestants still left, there's plenty of room for unexpected mishaps and even
surprising surges. And there's no other genre in music that could greatly
expose a singer's vocal abilities: Ballads. With an amazing catalog of the
most beautifully-written songs, did the finalists pick the correct song for
them? How did your favorite Idol fare? Let's all find out.
dhemzky - "Born For You" by David Pomeranz -- So dhemzky, the first
thing I noticed about your performance was that, the whiny tone I was talking
about on your audition song was back. And it's not necessarily a good thing.
The fortunate thing here is that it actually worked on this song. The way your
voice breaks into that whiny tone within each phrasing actually added
emotion to the performance, no matter how unintentional it was. But the
problem is that you seem to actually have that tone in your voice and I'm not
sure if it will work with other songs, and that could hurt you in your futureperformances. The control you had was back, great job. This was a little bit
better than last week, so congratulations. B
miszmille - "Dreaming of You" by Selena -- To be honest, miszmille,
this was a bad performance. And I'll tell you why. At first I thought you picked
the right song. And while I still believe this song is in your wheelhouse, I think
the overall performance was just not good. First of all you were on top of of
the beat through most song, especially at the beginning, where it was clear
you were ahead. There were also a lot of notes that were flat and just really
under the melody. You were in the Bottom 3 last week and I expected some
redemption. This didn't redeem you at all. Sorry. D+
wamber - "When You Say Nothing At All" by Alison Krauss -- Well, this
was interesting, wamber, because when I first heard you were singing this
song, I immediately thought about its most recent version which was Ronan
Keating's and I thought this might not work. But then you said you did the
Alison Krauss version of the song and I was relieved because her version,
while melodically similar with Keating's version and even the original version
of Keith Whitley (which, btw, I think the best version among the three), will
definitely work for your voice. There were still bum notes and I also thought
you didn't finish your phrasings that well. There were emotional disconnect insome parts of your performance. But if we're looking at this as a whole, it was
still a fairly good performance. B-
jmagno28 - "Para Lang Sa'yo" by Aiza Seguera -- The song's tone
suited your voice, jmagno28, and in that area, it was great, but this kind of
song never really captures the dynamics of a singer's voice. I know the

finalists have to sing a ballad this week, but you could have chosen a ballad
where there is a moment where you can show off your upper register while
still maintaining a solid mid and lower register. And speaking of the lower
register, I noticed you had a problem hitting the low notes in the song,
especially on the verses. Overall, the performance wasn't really that bad. The
mid-register was delivered really solidly, although I hoped you could'vechosen a song that didn't stay at that level all throughout. B
syaoran_li - "The Power of Love" by Celine Dion -- What a bold song
choice, syaoran_li! Well, I must say, overall, it showed an almost pretty solid
vocals. Plus, your nasally voice that I've always pointed out really matched
this song, because one, Celine Dion has that same tone in her voice and two,
it was used really effective in the song. However, there were still a few notes
that were a miss especially when you hit the end of your phrasings in the
verses. Your runs are still weak for me, but then, when you hit that high note
at the end, I was like, what am I blabbing about? It was a great performance.Congratulations! A-
lunaticz - "Minsan Lang Kita Iibigin" by Regine Velasquez -- Lunaticz,
this song had so many versions already that I wasn't so sure which one you
will be doing. But after a few notes, I decided you must have chosen to sing
the Songbird's version. Again, just like everybody else, there were wobbles in
the verses. It wasn't completely perfect clearly, but it also wasn't too bad
either. Majority of the notes were still hit, which is good. What was lacking for
me was the commitment in singing the song. I think this song required a little
bit more emotion from you to make it work. So, yeah. Overall, a fair job. B

jazzibels - "Tila" by Lani Misalucha -- Before I praise this wonderful job
you did, let me first get into 'what went wrong': I can barely understand what
you were singing. But the good thing is that I know this Lani Misalucha song
well enough to follow the lyrics. It started a little unsure, but then you turned
it around when you hit the second chorus, which dramatically surged your
final letter grade. That amazing ability of Ms. Misalucha to stretch out a note
and make it wide and then push it in to make it thin, was greatly captured in
this performance. I was a little worried at first, but this ended up really really
great that you, jazzibels, deserve an A- !
Here's the summary of tonight's scorecard:
dhemzky - "Born For You" by David Pomeranz -- B
miszmille - "Dreaming of You" by Selena -- C-

So that ends my review of myWAP Idol's Top 7 performances. I didn't expect
such an old selection of songs. Barely two songs were in the 21st century and
I had hoped there could have been fresher song choices. Anyway, let me turn
things over to you. Do you agree with my letter grades? Which deserved a
better score? Which performance had you yell "OVERRATED!"? Sound off in
the comments section.
