roy Duhon believes annual U.S. sales of new lightvehicles will remain at around 16 million for theforeseeable future. So he thinks it’s a good time tobuy dealerships.

The owner of Premier Automotive in New Orleans in-creased his dealership count to 21 last year from 14 — andincreased his new-vehicle retail sales 38 percent to 20,599.

The added stores, in a year when U.S. light-vehicle salesrose 5.9 percent, helped to propel his dealership group up22 spots to No. 35 on the annual Automotive News list ofthe top dealership groups based in the U.S. The listing isranked by 2014 retail unit sales of new cars and light trucks.

“When the [seasonally adjusted annual selling rate] hitsthose numbers, prices of dealerships go way up, and you’reseeing nonautomotive investors getting in the industry,which is raising blue-sky values,” said Duhon, whosestores are spread across five states.

“So we decided in 2014 to take advantage of some oppor-tunities,” he said.

Dealership consolidation picked up in 2014, a year manybuy-sell advisers say was the busiest in memory. That factis amply illustrated in the Automotive News dealershipgroup listing, which expands this year to 150 from 125.

ConsolidationThe top 150 groups owned 3,453 dealerships, or 19 per-

cent of the U.S. total. Looking at just the top 125, for com-parison purposes, they owned 17.1 percent of all U.S. deal-erships, up from 16.4 percent for the top 125 on last year’slist.

In sales, the domination of the largest dealership groupsis even more apparent. The top 150 sold 3,557,530 new re-tail and fleet light vehicles last year, or 22 percent of U.S.sales. And the top 10 groups on the list retailed 1,388,733new vehicles last year, or 41 percent of all retail sales by thetop 150 groups.

Two caveats:1. Some large dealership groups that we believe wouldqualify for the top 150 declined to respond to our survey. 2. For a few groups in the top 150, vehicle sales and rev-enues include operations outside the U.S. or affiliates be-yond franchised new light-vehicle dealerships.

The top 10 dealership groups on this year’s list werelargely the same as on last year’s, with only a few swappingpositions.

Van Tuyl Group, which is being bought by Warren Buf-fett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc., edged past Sonic Automo-tive Inc. to No. 4. And Ken Garff Auto-motive Group moved up to No. 10,passing Larry H. Miller Group of Cos.

Moving upDuhon’s Premier Automotive posted

the fourth-biggest jump in the ranking.Leading the gainers was Servco PacificInc., of Honolulu, followed by PriceSimms Auto Group, of Larkspur, Calif.Servco Pacific moved up 40 places toNo. 30, and Price Simms moved up 26spots to No. 77.

Zeigler Auto Group of Kalamazoo, Mich., posted thethird-biggest ranking gain. Its new retail sales of 13,444 lift-ed its ranking 23 slots to No. 66.

President Aaron Zeigler said the group acquired a Nissandealership in 2014 but he attributes a lot of the sales gainnot to buy-sell action but to new facilities and training for

his employees.He built five dealerships last year for a total of 19 new

stores, out of 20, over the last 10 years. Nice dealerships at-tract customers and good employees, he believes. And fiveof his dealerships include training centers for service tech-nicians, salespeople and new hires.

“We’ve created Zeigler University and the culmination ofthat over the last couple of years is really helping to drivesales at this point,” he said.

Prime Motor Group of Westwood, Mass., is new to the listthis year, debuting at No. 44 with newretail vehicle sales of 18,342.

But CEO David Rosenberg is not newto the industry. He and his father, IraRosenberg, started the group in 2007 af-ter having sold their Ira Motor Group —and the rights to the name — to Group 1Automotive Inc. in 2000.

Rosenberg said 2014 was a record yearfor his dealership group, having addedtwo stores — one Ford and one Mer-cedes-Benz — last year for a total of 23.A Toyota dealership and a Subaru store acquired in 2013also bore fruit last year, he said.

He hopes to set a record this year, but business at manyof his stores — in Massachusetts, Maine and New Hamp-shire — has been hampered by snowstorms.

Prime Motor’s stores at times were forced to open late,close early and on some days not open at all because of in-clement weather. That resulted in a total of six lost servicedays in January and February. He said he expects to makeup for lost sales in March and April. But “what you’re sell-ing in the service department is time,” he said. “And ifyou’re closed you can never get those labor hours back.”

OptimismAlso new to the list this year is Momentum Auto Group of

Fairfield, Calif., debuting at No. 146 — and another exam-ple of the optimistic buy-sell market.

Its president, Rahim Hassanally, acquired the formerThomason Auto Group in 2010. He added a Chevrolet storelast year, for a total of eight dealerships, all in northern Cal-ifornia. The additional store boosted the group’s new-ve-hicle sales by a third.

Hassanally plans to continue to grow his group. “Ourlong-term goal,” he said, “is not just be a regional autogroup but to be a national auto group.” c
