Main Office: 254-6820
Attendance: 254-6829
FAX: 254-6823
Tonia Shoup 254-6822
Our office business hours are
7:30 a.m.—4:00 p.m.
Please send a note to your
student’s teacher with if
they will need a transpor-
tation change or early
pick up. It is not enough
to tell your student, and
the office becomes very
busy at the end of the day
and we may not be able to
get a message in time.
ABSENCES
Please call the office at
254-6829 before 9:00 if your
child is going to be absent.
If your child has an illness
that is contagious, please
include that information in
the message.
If your child will be late,
please also leave lunch and
classroom information. (We
need to know if your stu-
dent will be taking Hot
Lunch, and if so, whether
they want an A or B lunch
or Chef Salad.)

Art Walk 2015—“Lights, Camera, Art!” We are eagerly awaiting our 4th Art Walk. The FCC is hopeful that this will be our only fundraiser this year.
On Friday, September 30, students will take home their Art Walk T-Shirt and pledge envelopes. Please have them wear the new shirt to school on Monday, October 3rd. Students are encouraged to return pledge enve-
lopes the week of October 10.
We will have our “Family Night” on Thursday, October 13th from 5-7 p.m. Family members are invited to take
a stroll through CPLC and enjoy our students’ artwork.
We could use some High School students to volunteer that night. If you have a student who needs community
service hours, please email Mrs. Shoup at [email protected].
Intermediate Special Persons Day Our intermediate students will be hosting Special Persons Day on Tuesday, Nov. 22nd. Classroom schedules will be sent home later in October. Please try to limit guests to no more than 2 per student.
Have you checked out the parent portal for Infinite Campus? Many parents have found it to be very helpful to view their child’s “grade-book”. The parent portal allows parents to view their 4th-6th grade child’s grades and missing assignments. Many parents are familiar with the parent portal through the high school and middle school. It is a valuable tool for all parents, and you do need to be signed up to get any alerts from GPS. Sign-ing up for Parent Portal and including your email address will also allow you to receive electronic copies of important notices. If you need the initial ID number, please email Evelyn at [email protected] and
also let her know whether you wish to receive electronic copies of newsletters and notes.
PARENT PORTAL
Daycare for Half Days On October 6, students will have a half day of school and will be dismissed at 11:36. Notes were
sent home in the middle of September to all parents about an alternative plan for parents needing
daycare on half days. You must register no later than Friday, September 30, 2016 if you are
interested in having your child/children participate. Please copy this link into your browser in
order to register: bit.ly/half-daysignup1. You may call or email Scott Merkel with questions at
[email protected] or 616-254-6557.
The FCC is looking for volunteers that can help count money the week of October 10th. Volun-
teers will count at approximately 2 PM each day. If you can help, please email Crista Hines at
Help is also needed to hang art work! Mrs. Vecchio would love helping hands on October 4th
from 1-3:30 PM and October 10 from 8:30-11:30 AM. No experience is needed!

Please remember that we do not have cardboard recycling; we actually have to pay to for cardboard pick up.
We do appreciate you paper drop offs, though. Thanks for your help!

The Elks Club Hoop Shoot will take place on Oct. 25, from 4:00 - 6:30 during the Tuesday conferences in the Century Park gym. Students ages 8-13 may participate in a free throw shooting challenge. Each student will shoot 10 free throws. The student in each age group with the most made baskets will
move on to the regional competition to be held in November. Last year we had a student named Tommy Gregwer that made it all the way to the National Championship! Awesome job, Tommy!! Registration forms will be available in the upcoming weeks. Check the Century Park weekly announcements if interested.

Hot Lunch Notice
Identification of Student Items
Please make sure you have your child’s name on his/her lunchbox. It is also helpful to put names in jackets
and sweatshirts. Students frequently take off jackets and leave them on the playground. We appreciate your
help in increasing the number of “found” items, and reducing the number of “lost” items.
Page 3
Please remember...when sending envelopes with money for hot lunch, please indicate your child’s first and
last name on the envelope. Sometimes it is not clear who the lunch
money belongs to. It would be helpful if you would also indicate your child’s classroom.
The office is still running low on clothing to fit Kindergarten & 1st grade GIRLS in case of an accident at
school. If you have any clothing size 6-8, especially sweatpants, we would love your donation. We could also
use a couple pair of sweats for older students who may tear clothing. Thanks to all of the families that donated
items for little boys!
Accidents Will Happen...
Our classroom directories will go home soon and that will contain addresses and phone numbers for most CPLC families. We ask that parents mail party invitations rather than have their child pass them out at school. The only exception would be if every child in a classroom received an invitation.
We appreciate your help in minimizing classroom disruptions and most importantly, to help prevent putting children in an uncomfortable or hurtful position.
Party Invitations
CPLC Tailgate Before Oct. 14th Game
On October 14th, CPLC families are invited to a Grandville Tailgate before the 7 PM varsity football
game. The Tailgate will be from 5-7 PM at the new athletic entrance. Tickets are $5 each or $20 per
family. This includes a hot dog, drink, chips, cookie and game ticket. It will be “Super Hero” night at the game.
Parents: We are starting out this year seeing higher number of colds and upper respiratory infections than typi-
cal. Here are a few reminders:
-Continue to review good handwashing with your children. -If your child is ill, (fever, coughing, exhaustion) please keep them home! Some of these viruses are very
“catchy” and young children can spread the infections easily.
-Please remember to call the school attendance line when your child is ill and will not be in school. -If you child has asthma or other respiratory disease, please make sure they are following their medication pro-
tocol. If they should have a rescue inhaler at school, please make sure this is provided. The Asthma Action
Guide should be completed if an elementary child has an inhaler at school. Unless otherwise indicated by the
physician, inhalers should be kept in the office. When little ones carry them back and forth, they can get mis-
placed and then are not available when needed.
Here is a link to the Asthma Action Guide on the district website: http://www.gpsbulldogs.org/apps/pages/
medical . Copies of this form are also available in the school offices or can be emailed to you. Please contact
the nurse at [email protected] if you’d like to receive an email copy.

2-Hour Delayed Start & School Closing Information
Page 4
Please be informed regarding Grandville Public Schools procedures should it
become necessary to have a 2 hour delayed start of school, as well as school
closing procedures due to inclement weather. Please make note of the infor-
mation listed below:
2 Hour Delayed Start: Should it become necessary to have a 2 Hour Delayed
Start, you will be notified of this delay via the local T.V. and radio stations. In
addition, you can also go to the GPS web site at www.grandville.k12.mi.us for
school delay and school closing information. School will begin exactly 2 hours
later than normal (10:30 a.m.). Buses pick-up times will also be delayed by 2
hours. On days when we have a 2 hour delayed start of school, all 6th
grade beginning band/orchestra classes, as well as morning ECSE
classes, will be CANCELLED! School hot lunch will be provided as usual
and lunch periods will be held at their normally scheduled times.
School Closing Information: Should it become necessary for GPS to close
schools, you will be notified of school closings via local T.V. and radio stations.
In addition, you can go to the GPS web site at www.grandville.k12.mi.us for
school closing information. GPS will notify local TV and radio stations and up-
date its web site as soon as possible once the decision has been made to close
school. When school is closed, all after school and evening school activities
will also be cancelled unless otherwise announced.
Inclement Weather Arrives after School has begun: Should inclement weather
arrive in the area once school has started, it is the policy of GPS not to dismiss
school early! School will dismiss at their normal times, unless a Tornado
Warning has been issued. GPS will not dismiss students to go home during a
Tornado Warning unless a child is picked up by their parent/guardian or a des-
ignated adult individual of whom the office has been informed of by the parent/
guardian.
Each year, we test students in a variety of ways to gauge their aca-
demic progress. We use DIBELS tests in Kindergarten-6th grades,
along with classroom assessments to make decisions on how students
receive extra help. In grades 3-6, we use both MAP and dibels, along
with classroom assessments to determine if a students qualifies for ad-
ditional support. Our extra support is provided by Mrs. Sheldon, Mrs.
Bustraan and Mrs. Wiest, who are funded with 31A funds from the
state. We follow the Michigan Department of Education guidelines for
student selection and program. The extra support that is provided is
supplemental to a child’s grade level instruction.
