LIEUT GD JEWETTKILLED IN FRANCE

Lieutenant George Daryl Jewett son of Mr and Mrs Frank W Jewett of 922 Shattuckavenue was killed in a flight while testing an English airplane at St Jean de MontsFrance November 10 according to news received yesterday by his parents in a letterfrom Lieutenant Rolla W NortonThe same mail brought to the family a number of letter from Lieutenant Jewett in which hewrote enthusiastically of his flights and work at the camp In the last words of his lastletter written the night before his death Lieutenant Jewett says ldquoI think the government isgoing to adopt a machine I have rigged up for landing a machine gun link belt which nowhas to be done by hand I hope this finds you all well and happyrdquoAccording to Lieutenant Norton a call was made for volunteers to test a new machine atthe camp and Lieutenant Jewett responded The machine went into a tail spin from avertical bank and did not come out As Lieutenant Jewett was an expert flyer it is believedby the authorities that the machine was defectiveIn his last letters Lieutenant Jewett wrote of giving an exhibition flight with a ldquoBabyNewportrdquo as a drawing card for a football game which was attended by a thousand men inuniform and many French civilians

Flights to LondonAt Issuedun the largest flying field in France Lieutenant Jewett was in charge of thedistribution service and delivered machines to all parts of the French war front and madeseveral trips from Paris to London to deliver machines While making a flight in a ldquoSpadrdquothe machine caught fire and by his presence of mind and quick descent he extinguishedthe flames before the machine reached the ground At Orly where Lieutenant Jewett was

also training he passed in the gunnery tests with the highest marks in a class of seventyLieutenant Jewett was born in Santa Rosa twenty-five years ago and had lived here forthe last eleven years He was a graduate of the Berkeley high school and took a sixmonthsrsquo mechanical course at the California School of Arts and Crafts After attending theuniversity for one year he enlisted and trained first at San Diego at the aviation school Hewas for three months in charge of the supply office there and was for five months in theassembling branch working up to the position of assembling the Curtiss airplanes InSeptember last year he was discharged from the regular army in order to re-enlist in theaviation section of the signal reserve corps He attended the military school of aeronauticsand was acting adjutant the last week hereLieutenant Jewett was placed in charge of the class leaving here enroute for Egypt AtNew York the plans were changed and the class was sent to Love Field Texas and inMay crossed to France Before going overseas Lieutenant Jewett was given a furlough tovisit his parents here He is survived by his parents and one sister Miss Daphne JewettLieutenant Jewett was buried in a government cemetery a beautiful spot at St Jean deMonts The funeral was strictly military and was attended by the commanding officer andhis staff the post band and his personal friends

Lieutenant George Daryl Jewett son of Mr and Mrs Frank W Jewett of 922 Shattuckavenue was killed in a flight while testing an English airplane at St Jean de MontsFrance November 10 according to news received yesterday by his parents in a letterfrom Lieutenant Rolla W NortonThe same mail brought to the family a number of letter from Lieutenant Jewett in which hewrote enthusiastically of his flights and work at the camp In the last words of his lastletter written the night before his death Lieutenant Jewett says ldquoI think the government isgoing to adopt a machine I have rigged up for landing a machine gun link belt which nowhas to be done by hand I hope this finds you all well and happyrdquoAccording to Lieutenant Norton a call was made for volunteers to test a new machine atthe camp and Lieutenant Jewett responded The machine went into a tail spin from avertical bank and did not come out As Lieutenant Jewett was an expert flyer it is believedby the authorities that the machine was defectiveIn his last letters Lieutenant Jewett wrote of giving an exhibition flight with a ldquoBabyNewportrdquo as a drawing card for a football game which was attended by a thousand men inuniform and many French civilians

Flights to LondonAt Issuedun the largest flying field in France Lieutenant Jewett was in charge of thedistribution service and delivered machines to all parts of the French war front and madeseveral trips from Paris to London to deliver machines While making a flight in a ldquoSpadrdquothe machine caught fire and by his presence of mind and quick descent he extinguishedthe flames before the machine reached the ground At Orly where Lieutenant Jewett was

also training he passed in the gunnery tests with the highest marks in a class of seventyLieutenant Jewett was born in Santa Rosa twenty-five years ago and had lived here forthe last eleven years He was a graduate of the Berkeley high school and took a sixmonthsrsquo mechanical course at the California School of Arts and Crafts After attending theuniversity for one year he enlisted and trained first at San Diego at the aviation school Hewas for three months in charge of the supply office there and was for five months in theassembling branch working up to the position of assembling the Curtiss airplanes InSeptember last year he was discharged from the regular army in order to re-enlist in theaviation section of the signal reserve corps He attended the military school of aeronauticsand was acting adjutant the last week hereLieutenant Jewett was placed in charge of the class leaving here enroute for Egypt AtNew York the plans were changed and the class was sent to Love Field Texas and inMay crossed to France Before going overseas Lieutenant Jewett was given a furlough tovisit his parents here He is survived by his parents and one sister Miss Daphne JewettLieutenant Jewett was buried in a government cemetery a beautiful spot at St Jean deMonts The funeral was strictly military and was attended by the commanding officer andhis staff the post band and his personal friends

Lieutenant George Daryl Jewett son of Mr and Mrs Frank W Jewett of 922 Shattuckavenue was killed in a flight while testing an English airplane at St Jean de MontsFrance November 10 according to news received yesterday by his parents in a letterfrom Lieutenant Rolla W NortonThe same mail brought to the family a number of letter from Lieutenant Jewett in which hewrote enthusiastically of his flights and work at the camp In the last words of his lastletter written the night before his death Lieutenant Jewett says ldquoI think the government isgoing to adopt a machine I have rigged up for landing a machine gun link belt which nowhas to be done by hand I hope this finds you all well and happyrdquoAccording to Lieutenant Norton a call was made for volunteers to test a new machine atthe camp and Lieutenant Jewett responded The machine went into a tail spin from avertical bank and did not come out As Lieutenant Jewett was an expert flyer it is believedby the authorities that the machine was defectiveIn his last letters Lieutenant Jewett wrote of giving an exhibition flight with a ldquoBabyNewportrdquo as a drawing card for a football game which was attended by a thousand men inuniform and many French civilians

Flights to LondonAt Issuedun the largest flying field in France Lieutenant Jewett was in charge of thedistribution service and delivered machines to all parts of the French war front and madeseveral trips from Paris to London to deliver machines While making a flight in a ldquoSpadrdquothe machine caught fire and by his presence of mind and quick descent he extinguishedthe flames before the machine reached the ground At Orly where Lieutenant Jewett was

flight The crew was Northrop Chief Test Pilot Bruce J Hinds and Col Richard Couch The top secretldquostealth bomberrdquo prototype landed at Edwards AFB California 1 hour 52 minutes later After completingthe flight test program -1066 was placed in storage until 1993 awaiting upgrade to the Block 10operational configuration In 2000 it was again upgraded to the Block 30 standard It is now named Spiritof America and assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing at Whiteman AFB Missouri

July 23 1983The National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton Ohio enshrined the Navyrsquos only World War I ace David SIngalls He was honored for his service during that war in the Naval Air Transport Service during WorldWar II and for his postwar role in commercial aviation Ingalls was Daedalian Founder Member 3603
