251. Pin? (JT 821, unit 616) L. (frag) 43mm W. 7mm Th. 4mmTwisted fragment possibly from a pin; field notes record a purple patina suggestive of a silver artefact; a small perforation in the thickest part of the surviving artefact (D. 2mm) contains traces of copper corrosion. May represent a badly corroded silver toggle-pin containing a piece of copper wire running through the perforation.

Pin (JT 441, unit 659, Conc. D) L. (frag) 32mm D. 1.5mmLength of metal of circular cross-section, small diameter and lack of taper might indicate a needle or length of wire, rather than a pin fragment.

589. Pin (JT 447.01, unit 659, Conc. D) L. (frag) 68mm D. (head) 6mm D. (shaft) 3mm. Wt. 1.9g.Toggle-pin with hemispherical head of slightly conical form, with circular perforation in thickened part of shaft just below head. Found with 447.02.

Pin (JT 447.02, unit 659, Conc. D) L. (frag) 56mm D. 5mm Wt. 2.0gLower part of toggle-pin, tapering to a sharp point. Broken across small lower end of perforation. Surface very uneven because of corrosion. Found with 447.01

[590.] Pin (JT 655, unit 659, Conc. D) L. (frag) 149mm D. 6mm (corroded) Wt. 9.4g.Lower section of long toggle-pin of circular-cross-section and with perforation in thickened part of shaft; head and upper part of perforation missing. Original length probably c. 200mm.

[461.] Pin (JT 365, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 22mm D. 3mmAs JT 250

461a. Pin (JT 444, , unit 410, Conc. C) L. (frag) 68mm D. 5mmFragment of thick, tapered pin-shaft of circular cross-section; both terminals missing.

462. Pin (JT 450, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 31mm D. 4mmFragment of toggle-pin including part of terminal, probably originally similar to JT 250.

463. Pin (JT 206, unit 395) L. (frag) 50mm D. 3mmFragment of shaft of pin, circular cross-section.

[464.] Pin? (JT 220, unit 395) L. (frag) 35mm W. 13mm Th. 8mmFragment of shaft of pin, circular cross-section.

465. Ring (JT 297, unit 410) D. 18mm D. (shaft) 3mm. Wt. 1.0gLength of metal of circular cross-section, bent round to form a nearly complete circle; terminals blunt although one appears to be slightly tapered, and is bent outwards, if not bent the terminals would have overlapped. Finger ring or earring ?. [466.] Awl? (JT 267, unit 395) L. 57mm W. 4mm Th. 5.5mm Pointed tool of rectangular cross-section, probably an awl or punch. One end has been hammered to a tapered point, the other terminal narrows more abruptly and ends in a blunt butt-end, perhaps intended for hafting. Surface shows silver colouring, which may indicate the use of a high-arsenic copper. Good state of preservation.

467. Spearhead (JT 363, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 119mm Section (blade). 15mm. Wt. 81g. Spearhead with tapering blade of square cross-section, point missing; tang survives only as fragments but clearly had a square cross-section, and ended in an expanded terminal bent round at right angles to the main axis of the weapon. There is a clear horizontal ridge at the junction of blade and tang, perhaps intended as a stop-ridge to prevent the blade being driven back into the handle on impact. The edges of

25

the blade and tang are on the same plane although the corners of the tang have been beveled slightly presumably to protect the handle. Surface of blade very smooth although there is clear evidence of hammer marks on the tang. Cf. Philip (1989: 73, Fig. 13.66 Type 8).

468. Spearhead (fragment of tang) (JT 218, unit 395) L. (frag) 44mm W. 14mm Cross-section 5mm Wt. 6.0 g. Square-sectioned tang, terminal bent to form a right angle, slightly expanded at end; evidence of hammer-shaping; almost certainly from a spearhead Cf. JT 363.

469. Spearhead (JT 280, unit 410) L. (frag) 216mm L. (tang) 114mm W. (blade) 26mm, Th (blade) 4mm. Wt. 69.4g. Blade of lens-shaped section with sloping shoulders and straight tapering sides; point missing. The upper end of the blade runs into a long straight tang of square cross-section, ending in an expanded terminal which is round bent at 70 degrees; there is good evidence for extensive hammering of the tang. One surface of the blade is heavily corroded, the other shows wavy patterns in the corrosion product. The combination of the flat blade and bent tang is not a common one.

470. Axe (JT 360, unit 658, Conc. C) L. 165mm L. (blade) 122 Cutting edge 12mm Socket (internal) L. 31 Br. 27. Wt. 330g. Shaft-hole axe, with blade of circular cross-section, angled downwards tapering to a blunt point; cylindrical socket (slightly oval internally) with angled upper and lower margins; the upper margin is has a ‘stepped’ profile, enhanced by small projections front and rear the lower is straight edges, each is enhanced by a thickened horizontal ridge. Cf. Philip (1989: 60-1), shaft-hole axe Type 1.

471. Axe (JT 281, unit 410) L. 112mm L. (blade) 81mm Cutting edge 16mmSocket (internal) L. 17 Br. 17. Wt. 147 g. Shaft-hole axe, with plain rectangular blade, angled downwards; rectangular cross-section of constant thickness, tapering rapidly at the straight cutting edge; the upper and lower margins of the cylindrical socket are angled the upper is straight-edged, the lower slightly concave; each is enhanced by a thickened horizontal ridge; there is a vertical ridge at the rear of the socket which merges with the rib at the lower margin of the socket and is continued downwards to form a short vertical projection below the socket. The socket is near-circular internally, wood traces are preserved in the corrosion within the socket. There is a slight indentation on the inner front face of the socket. Clearly produced by casting from a mould. Cf. Philip (1989: 61-2, Fig. 8. 362), shaft-hole axe Type 2 with parallel-sided blade.

472. Tang of Dagger/Knife (JT 235, unit 657, Conc. B) L. (frag) 22mm W. 10mm Th. 5mmFragment of rectangular dagger/knife tang with centrally placed single rivet, located 10mm from end of tang, and projecting 7mm beyond the metal.

473. Tang of spearhead (JT 244, unit 657, Conc. B) L. (frag) 46mm W. 6mm Th. 6mmLength of metal of square cross-section, the terminal is slightly expanded and is bent at right angles to the shaft

474. Dagger (JT 327, unit 658, Conc. C) L. 162mm W. 35mm Th. 3mm Wt. 41.2 g. Dagger with round shouldered thin blade of flat cross-section; the edges of the blade are concave- and the point broken or badly corroded. Hafted by means of three rivets, of which one remains, arranged with one in each shoulder and one in a short rectangular tang with a square terminal; tang is of same thickness as blade. One end of the tang-rivet (L. 25 mm, square cross-section) has been flattened by hammering presumably during fixing of the handle. Two additional rivet fragments were found with the dagger, both with flattened heads it is not clear whether these came from the shoulders or relate to some other part of the dagger’s handle. A very simple style of dagger, cf. Philip (1989: 129-130) dagger type 36.

475. Dagger (JT 352, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 148mm W. 33mm Th. 3.5 mm Wt. 38.3g.Blade with slightly concave shoulders, and flat, lens-shaped cross-section; edges of blade are slightly convex, and converge to a blunt point. Shoulders continue into a short rectangular tang of rectangular cross-section, the upper part of which is now lost, the break appears to run across a centrally placed rivet hole. Corrosion preserves traces of wood on tang and upper shoulders. Cf. Philip (1989: 137-38, Fig. 33. 1128) dagger type 37.

[476.] Dagger (JT 356, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 25mm W. 28mm Th. 2mmFragment of dagger; blade has square shoulders and lozenge-shaped cross-section, lower part of blade missing; tang is tapering and ends in a rounded terminal.

477. Dagger (JT 449, unit 658, Conc. C) L. 152mm W. 32mm Th. 2 mm Wt. 35g. Dagger with asymmetric concave-shouldered blade of flat cross-section; the edges of the blade are slightly convex but asymmetric as a result of resharpening, the point is rounded; the blade terminated in a rectangular tang, most of which is now lost and there are no remaining trace of rivet holes.

478. Dagger (JT 263, unit 395) L (frag.) 180 mm, W. 31mm, Th. 8 mm Wt. 126g. Dagger with convex-sided blade of lozenge-shaped cross-section with a slightly thickened area (W. c. 12 mm) around centerline; blunt cutting edges curve to a blunt point. Shoulders are slightly concave; tang is rectangular but slightly stepped-in towards tip which is missing. Handle was attached by five rivets arranged with one in each shoulder and three in the tang, consisting of a lower pair and a single rivet near tip. The rivets are of circular cross-section. On one side corrosion preserves traces of wood around the two shoulder rivets. The metal of the blade shows some corrosion and cracking, which obscures the surface decoration in many places. However, this can be reconstructed as consisting of five pairs of parallel lines; one pair runs down the centerline (not shown on drawing) and there are two further pairs on each side of the centerline, tracing slightly curving arcs. It is not clear whether these were cast-in or incised. This dagger foreshadows forms common in Middle Bronze Age contexts in the Levant, cf. Philip 1989: 117-8) dagger Type 13.

479. Dagger (JT 283, unit 410) L. (frag.) 162mm, W. 32mm Th. 4mm. Blade with slightly convex tapering sides broken at both point and tang ends; flat, lens-shaped cross-section, blade thinner at cutting edges, and bent upwards near broken point; original form not clear. Additional metal around the shoulders is suggestive of some sort of hilt plate involving metal flanges around the butt. Alternatively this may represent a socketed spearhead of Philip’s (1989: 96-7, Fig 23.180) Type 10.

480. Dagger (tang fragment) (JT 306, unit 410) L. (frag) 21mm W. 15mmFragment of rectangular tang with parallel sides and rounded butt end; flat rectangular in cross-section; there is a single short rivet placed centrally; a fragment of bone adheres to soil on tang. Found with a small metal fragment possibly from the blade.

480a. Dagger (JT 366, unit 410) L. (frag) 80mm W. 39mm Th. 2mm Wt. 37.1g.Two fragments from a thin flat blade with one slightly and one markedly convex edges; the more convex edge is sharper than the other, suggesting use as a one-edge cutting implement. Original form uncertain although there are indications of one concave shoulder, and the partly broken-away remains of a rivet hole.

481. Blade (JT 311, unit 658, Conc. C) L. (frag) 38mm W. 22mm Th. 4mmFragment of plain blade, with thickened central section. Associated with JT 306, 309, 310.

27. Pin ? (JT 578, unit 573) L. (frag) 32mm W. 2mm Th. 2mm Length of metal of circular cross-section with bent point; probably fragment of a pin-shaft.

28. Pin (JT 600, unit 573) L. (frag) 55mm D. 3mm Three non-joining fragments of toggle-pin with spherical head; head and lower shaft are separated by a distinct, constricted ‘neck’ area. Perforation, probably ovoid in form and now partly missing was located 7 mm below head.

29. Pin (JT 601, unit 573) L. (frag) 38mm Fragment of pin with spherical head, distinguished by two horizontal ridges which run around shaft of circular cross-section immediately below the head; shaft of circular cross-section.

30. Pin (JT 608, unit 573) L. (frag) 75mm D. 25 mm. Length of metal tapered at one end, probably lower part of a pin-shaft. Thickening towards broken end may indicate presence of a swelling indicative of a perforation in this area, now masked by corrosion.

31. Pin ? (JT 609, unit 573) L. (frag) 82mm D. 2.5 mm. Length of metal of circular cross-section tapered at one end, with an ovoid perforation 3mm below break. Probably lower part of a toggle-pin, although could possibly be a needle of some kind. Condition and corrosion renders exact identification uncertain.

40

40

32. Pin (JT 611, unit 573) L. 5.2 D. (shaft) 2.5. Upper section of pin with hemispherical head and shaft of circular cross-section. Base of head shows a distinctive bevel, presumably the result of forming technique.

33. Ring (medium) (JT 575, unit 573) L. (frag) 52mm W. (frag) 7mm Th. 4mm Curving length of metal, of sub-ovoid cross-section revealing convex faceting on the two broad surfaces, and slight rounding of the short-sides. A slight thickening at one end is due to corrosion. Appears just large enough to represent part of a bracelet; est. original diameter c. 6cm.

Head and upper shaft, shaft of pin with hemispherical head Corrosion obscures presence/absence of perforation Found along with several shaft fragments.

17. Pin (JT 879, unit 956) L. (frag) 135mm D (head). 12mm Head and upper shaft, shaft of pin with hemispherical head; the pin has a small perforation but there is no thickening of the shaft at this point; shaft joins with lower section 879.02. Corrosion retains impression of faint horizontal lines around the shaft close to the head; similar lines appear close to and running through the perforation, suggesting that a thread binding was looped through eyelet, and around the shaft of the pin just below the head.

18. Pin (JT 880, unit 956) D. (head) 13 mm. Two non-joining fragments of pin with hemispherical head; part of shaft where perforation usually located is missing. Corrosion on the shaft preserves traces of a thread binding manifest as pairs of lines. These appear to wind diagonally around the shaft several times.

19. Pin (JT 881, unit 956) Three shaft fragments, probably joining.

20. Pin (JT 882, unit 956)Several shaft fragments, some joining, May represent the remains of two separate pins. Corrosion on one shaft fragment retains traces of a thread binding.

21. Pin (JT 890, unit 956) L.137mm D (head). 13 mmTwo near-joining fragments of toggle-pin with hemispherical head. Ovoid perforation located in thickened section of shaft just below the head. Traces of thread binding preserved in corrosion as horizontal lines immediately below head and in vicinity of perforation.

22. Pin (JT 891, unit 956) L. (frag) 115 mm D. (head) 14 mmSeveral fragments of toggle-pin with hemispherical head. Ovoid perforation in thickened area of shaft just below head. Attached to 892 by corrosion products.

23. Pin (JT 892, unit 956) Fragments of toggle-pin, attached to 891 by corrosion products. Form of head obscured by corrosion, ovoid perforation in thickened area of shaft. Angle of attachment of 891 and 892 might suggest that the two pins were originally positioned deliberately within the same material (cloth ?), perhaps originally crossing-over ? (see discussion)

24. Pin (JT 893, unit 956) Several fragments, including the upper part of a pin with hemispherical head.

25. Pin (JT 894, unit 956) Shaft fragment, icluding part of thickened section for ovoid

26. Pin (JT 897, unit 956) Two joining fragments recovered from inside ceramic vessel JT 876

27. Misc (JT 895, unit 956) Several small fragments of sheet metal, probably from a sieve or strainer.
