Geography Bee

2013

In which state would you find the Rainy River and the Lake of the Woods?

In which Canadian province would you find the city of Churchill?

Have you ever heard of the Yaghan, a nomadic tribe living in Tierra del

Fuego? Aside from Argentina, do you know in what country they can be

found?

Tolland Intermediate School held its annual Geography Bee on January 9, 2013. Ten finalists

competed on stage in front of a live audience answering difficult questions about this country as

well as others around the world.

The finalists were selected among fifth grade classes after a preliminary 35-question test had

been given. Each of the finalists correctly answered at least 21 questions on the preliminary test

in order to compete in Friday’s final live contest.

After several grueling rounds of questions, James D. earned the first spot in the championship

round, but the second contestant for the championship round took longer to determine. Eric H.

and Sydney L. went back and forth for three more rounds until Eric earned the final spot. In the

championship round, Eric H. rallied to win the first place prize after correctly identifying Chile

as the other country in South America that is home to the Yaghan.

Congratulations to all of our finalists and especially to our school champion, Eric. He will now

take a test in order to earn a spot in the State of Connecticut Geography Bee, and potentially earn

a spot in the National Geography Bee in Washington, DC.

In case you were wondering, the Rainy River and Lake of the Woods are in Minnesota, and the

city of Churchill is in Manitoba.
