Water supply is an indispensable and important lifeline to support citizens’ lives and urban activities in the capital city, Tokyo, and the stable water supply is sustained by innumerable water supply facilities (water

supply system). In particular, water conveyance facilities which convey raw water from rivers, etc., to water purification plants(WPPs), WPPs which produce tap water, transmission pipes which pump water from

WPPs, and water supply stations which capture tap water temporarily and distribute tap water steadily are the fundamental facilities forming the framework of the water supply system.

Among the fundamental facilities, some are aging decrepit, some are supplying tap water to quite extensive areas on their own, and some cannot be closed down since backup functions are not secured. Amidst the

possible various risks of a disaster including an earthquake, etc., and the occurrence of an accident, if the function of the fundamental facilities is stopped, the resulthing water failure could have far-reachimg bad

facilities to be conducted intensively over the next decade, under which we are steadily proceeding with the construction. Since what is required now is to strengthen risk management to respond to a volcanic

eruption, terrorism and other crises, we have decided to enhance our approaches to WPPs and water supply st tions.

【Direction of the development】○Water conveyance facilities will be duplicated to ensure a backup

function not only in case of a disaster such as an earthquake or an

accident, but also during construction for renewal, etc.

○Along with the development of alternative water purification facilities and the renewal of water purification plants (WPPs), water conveyance

facilities will also duplicated.

【Direction of the development】○We will construct alternative water purification facilities at other WPP site,etc in

advance to supplement the declining capacity at the time of renewal and then

advance the renewal of WPP.

○ Along with the development of alternative water purification facilities and the

renewal of WPPs, basically, all ponded structures which will be developed will be

covered with building structure in preparation for a ash fall caused by a volcanic

eruption and terrorism, etc.

【Direction of the development】

○We will seek to establish a wide-range transmission pipe network and divide the

water transmission to a water supply station into two lines as well as to

adequately secure backup functions not only at the time of a disaster such as an

earthquake and an accident but also during construction works for renewal, etc.

○We will advance the development of transmission pipes from an alternative

water purification facility in preparation for a renewal of a WPP.

【Direction of the development]】○In order to quickly improve the stability of water supply, we will restructure the

water distributing area to an appropriate size through improvement of new

water supply station and expansion by renewing decrepit facilities.

○The reservoir capacity in water supply stations will be improved to aim to

supply water for 12 hours of the planned maximum water distribution amount

per day to respond to hourly variation in water usage and in case of

emergency such as an accident.
