Tại sao diagrams lại được đánh giá là dạng bài “khó chịu” nhất?

Sơ đồ hay diagrams thường là dạng bài thi các thí sinh IELTS “ngán” nhất bởi hai lý do:

Về hình thù, diagrams trông phức tạp và nguy hiểm hơn charts và graphs.

Về nội dung, nhiều khi thí sinh nhìn vào diagrams và chẳng biết nó là cái gì, tiếng Việt cònkhông hiểu, nói gì đến chuyện miêu tả bằng tiếng Anh.

Thiếu từ vựng

Lời khuyên quan tr ọng nhất… Trong quá trình ôn luyện, bạn tuyệt đối đừ ng bao gi ờ đọc bài mẫu ngay lập tức. Thay vào đó, bạncần phải tự mình hiểu biểu đồ, tự lập dàn ý và tự viết trước đã.

Việc ngay lập tức đọc bài mẫu cũng giống như việc bạn vừa bật bài hát vừa hát theo; lúc này, bạntưởng đã thuộc bài, nhưng hãy thử tắt đài đi, bạn sẽ thấy việc “tự hát” không hề đơn giản, khôngquên chỗ này thì cũng sẽ sai nhạc chỗ khác.

Vì thế, việc tối quan tr ọng là phải “tự lực cánh sinh”.

Chiến lược chung

Đừng học thuộc bài mẫu, trong điều kiện thi cử căng thẳng, thường là bạn sẽ không nhớ được cái

gì đâu, đặc biệt là “văn mẫu”

Hãy nhìn diagram với tâm thế nhìn một hình vẽ thôi, 90% các trường hợp, bạn sẽ hiểu được nó làcái gì. Lưu ý, bạn chưa cần phải chú tr ọng vào việc tìm và hiểu các từ vựng ở trong diagrams, hãycứ “xem hình” là chính thôi. Hãy nhớ, nhìn hình và “hiểu hình” là quan trọng nhất.

Dựa vào việc hiểu, bạn hãy tự lập dàn ý. Lưu ý, với những sơ đồ có quá nhiều chi tiết và từ vựngmiêu tả, bạn đừng quá đi sâu và các chi tiết. Thay vào đó, hãy chỉ tập trung vào những điểm chínhđể lập dàn bài. Bạn đừng vội dùng tiếng Anh khi lập dàn bài, việc dùng tiếng Việt sẽ giúp bạn tiếtkiệm được thời gian.

Hãy tự mình viết first draft (bản đầu tiên) và hãy hoàn thành nó thật nhanh, tránh vừa viết vừa sửa – chỗ nào không biết thì cứ tạm chèn tiếng Việt vào cũng được. Thậm chí 90% first draft là tiếngViệt cũng được. Điều quan tr ọng nhất là bạn đang thực sự “viết” – dù học bao nhiêu lý thuyết màbạn không thực sự cầm bút lên để viết thì cũng không “ăn thua” đâu.

Hãy học thuộc lòng và hiểu bản chất cách dùng của những từ vựng và dạng thức ngữ pháp phổ biến dành cho dạng bài Diagrams. Chúng không nhiều, r ất dễ hiểu và dễ ứng dụng – hãy họcthuộc lòng và sử dụng chính xác.

Hướng dẫn viết Mở bài, Tổng quan và Chi tiết bài Diagrams

Mở bài: viết lại đề bài bằng ngôn ngữ của riêng mình

Đoạn tổng quan:

nếu là quy trình thì nó bắt đầu bằng việc gì, kết thúc bằng việc gì, có bao nhiêu bước để hoàn thiện quy trình

nếu là máy thì gồm những bộ phận chính nào

Lưu ý: đoạn tổng quan này có thể chỉ cần một câu và có thể gắn với mở bài

Thân bàiDo sự liên quan của các quy trình, việc bạn trình bày tất cả các bước của quy trình trong mộtđoạn là hợp lý. Tuy nhiên, bạn vẫn nên tách thành 2 đoạn thân bài để bài luận bớt nặng nề về cấu

trúc.

Từ vựng và Ngữ pháp cho dạng bài Diagrams

Key words cần thuộc làuKhi miêu tả diagrams, bạn sẽ luôn cần đến những từ vựng như quy trình, các bước trong quy

trình, bộ phận, chi tiết cấu thành máy móc. Hãy học thuộc những từ sau:

Passives: cấu trúc bị độngDạng thức bị động được sử dụng r ất nhiều trong IELTS Writing Task 1, thí sinh cần nắm chắc để ứng dụng. Một cách nhớ đơn giản nhất đó là với loại ngữ pháp này, tiếng Anh và tiếng Việt r ấtgiống nhau.

Tiếng Việt: Tôi bị đánh. | Tôi được cho tiền Tiếng Anh: I was beaten. | I was given money.

Như vậy, nếu “bị” và “được” là dấu hiệu của dạng thức bị động trong tiếng Việt, “be” là dấu hiệucủa bị động trong tiếng Anh. Công thức của bị động r ất đơn giản như sau:

be + past participle of main verb

Để hiểu thế nào là main verb, chúng ta sẽ xem ví dụ dưới đây:

The machine continues to grill bricks at a temperature.

Bricks continue to be grilled at a temperature.

Phân tích: trong câu trên có 2 động từ, nhưng động từ được sử dụng cho passives là “grill” vì đólà hành động tr ực tiếp tác động lên sự vật ở đây.

a step: một bướca stage: một giai đoạna process: một quy trìnha cycle: một vòng tuần hoàna detail: một chi tiếta part/a component: một bộ phận

the start/the end of a cycle: điểm bắt đầu/kết thúc quy trình

The diagram illustrates/describes/shows… The diagram gives a description of….

There are five key steps to complete a full cycle…: Có năm bướcchính để hoàn thành một vòng khép kín… There are four main stages in the development/construction/…: Cóbốn giai đoạn chính trong sự phát triển/trong việc xây….

Thời của động từ sử dụng

Hầu hết các diagrams đều miêu tả một quy trình lặp đi lặp lại, một hiện tượng tự nhiên hay cấu

trúc máy móc. Vì vậy, thí sinh nên sử dụng thời hiện tại đơn giản.

Trong một số trường hợp, thí sinh cũng có nhu cầu sử dụng thời tương lai; ví dụ: sau khi gạchđược nung, chúng sẽ được làm nguội ở trong một buồng riêng. Lúc này, bạn có thể lựa chọn sử dụng hai cách sau để diễn tả thời tương lai:

After bricks are baked at a temperature, they will be cooled down in a separate chamber. After bricks are baked at a temperature, they are to be cooled down in a separate chamber.

Cấu trúc “be + to do” (chủ động) và “be + to be done” (bị động) thể hiện sắc thái ý nghĩa tương laihay trách nhiệm cần làm. Cái hay của cấu trúc này là đây là thời tương lai trên lý thuyết, tức là

theo quy trình đó, thì tiếp theo, điều gì sẽ xảy ra, chứ không phải là sắc thái tương lai về thời gian.Vì đặc điểm này, cấu trúc “be + to do” được khuyến khích sử dụng hơn so với “will + do.”

Hãy xem một số ví dụ khác:

The city authority is to plant 3,000 trees this year.Phân tích: (Theo kế hoạch) thành phố sẽ tr ồng 3.000 cây xanh trong năm nay. (“sẽ” thể hiện kế hoạch thực hiện, chứ không phải thời tương lai chắc chắn)

In the next step, the air is to be sucked back into the column to turn the turbine.Phân tích: Trong bước tiếp theo, không khí sẽ bị hút lại vào trong ống và làm quay tuốc bin. (“sẽ”thể hiện sự tuần tự thời gian chứ không phải là thời tương lai.)

Noun phrase

Noun phrase là mệnh đề nhưng được sử dụng trong câu như một danh từ, tức là có thể đảmnhận vị trí các ngữ pháp như chủ ngữ hay tân ngữ (phổ biến nhất là vị trí “tân ngữ”). Chúng ta hãyxem các ví dụ sau:

I do not understand why he left the company.

I do not know how to answer this question.

Các mệnh đề “why” và “how” trong hai ví dụ là đối tượng chịu tác động của động từ, vì thế, chúnglà tân ngữ trong câu.

which, when, where

Bạn cần dùng “which, when, where” để nối dài và tăng nội dung thông tin cho câu.

“which, when, where” rất dễ sử dụng vì cách dùng cũng như nghĩa của chúng giống hệt tiếng Việt(“cái mà…, nơi…, khi….”). Chúng ta hãy xem những ví dụ sau:

The process involves a structure which is mounted on the side of a cliff or sea wall. (Quytrình bao g ồm một c ấu trúc đượ c d ựng trên vách đá hoặc đê biển)

In these regions, people employ a much simpler way to protect houses, which is to raise theheight of the pillars on which houses stand. (Ở những nơi này, người ta dùng một phươ ngthức đơn giản hơn để bảo vệ nhà cửa, phương thức tăng chiều cao cột nhà).

Lưu ý: trong ví dụ trên, trước “which” có dấu phẩy để tránh gây nhầm lẫn. Nếu không códấu phẩy, người đọc có thể nhầm lẫn rằng “which” thay cho “houses”; dấu phẩy sẽ giúp tạongăn cách để người đọc có thể hiểu rằng “which” thay cho “a much simpler way”

The diagram shows the life cycle of the honey bee. Two things to consider are:

1. how to summarise the diagram before describing the stages in detail

2.whether to use active or passive verb forms

The diagram illustrates the various stages in the life of a honey bee. We can see that the completelife cycle lasts between 34 and 36 days. It is also noticeable that there are five main stages in thedevelopment of the honey bee, from egg to mature adult insect.

The life cycle of the honey bee begins when the female adult lays an egg; the female typically laysone or two eggs every 3 days. Between 9 and 10 days later, each egg hatches and the immatureinsect, or nymph, appears.

During the third stage of the life cycle, the nymph grows in size and sheds its skin three times.This process of moulting first takes place 5 days after the egg hatches, then 7 days later, andagain another 9 days later. After a total of 30 to 31 days from the start of the cycle, the young adulthoney bee emerges from its final moulting stage, and in the space of only 4 days it reaches fullmaturity.

The picture illustrates the process of producing electricity in a home using solar panels.

It is clear that there are five distinct stages in this process, beginning with the capture of energyfrom sunlight. The final two steps show how domestic electricity is connected to the external power

supply. At the first stage in the process, solar panels on the roof of a normal house take energy from thesun and convert it into DC current. Next, this current is passed to an inverter, which changes it to AC current and regulates the supply of electricity. At stage three, electricity is supplied to the homefrom an electrical panel.

At the fourth step shown on the diagram, a utility meter in the home is responsible for sending anyextra electric power outside the house into the grid. Finally, if the solar panels do not provideenough energy for the household, electricity will flow from the utility grid into the home through themeter.

The diagram illustrates the basic principles of hydroelectric power. The process requires the

construction of a large dam connected to a powerhouse. The dam creates a large reservoir andthe powerhouse is where the electricity is generated.

First of all, water trapped in the reservoir behind the dam is forced through an intake. It then flowsinto a narrow chamber called a penstock, where the resulting high pressure turns a turbine. Theturbine is connected to a generator in the powerhouse above, and this is where the movement ofthe turbine is converted into electricity. The resulting electricity leaves the powerhouse via cablesthat carry it over long distances to where it can be used.

It is interesting to note that a hydroelectric dam creates no harmful byproducts and relies entirelyon natural forces to produce electricity. After the turbine stage, water flows out through a secondchannel and into a river. The process is renewable, thanks to the water cycle in nature.

Variations in the skeletal systems of two early types of human are illustrated in this diagram.Overall, we can see that australopithecus afarensis had a heavier body and much longer arms,while homo erectus was slimmer and had more developed joints.

To begin with the upper half of the body, australopithecus afarensis had a much broader chest and

waist than homo erectus, giving it a rounder appearance. The former had much longer arms andlarger hands, which would have been useful for climbing trees.

As for the lower half of the body, we can see that homo erectus had proportionately longer legsand larger hip, knee and ankle joints. The feet of homo erectus were also smaller and morearched, with shorter toes. These differences meant that homo erectus was better suited to long-distance running.

In conclusion, we can see significant changes in the development of early humans from thediagram. Homo erectus is more similar to contemporary human beings with its long legs andarched feet. The physical differences are clearly related to differences in the lifestyles of treeclimbers and endurance runners.

The diagram illustrates how to knot a bow tie in eight stages.

To begin with, the tie should be placed around the neck, with one end slightly longer than the

other. Then place the longer end over the other and pass it upwards and behind the point where

the two ends cross.

Next, take the other end of the tie and bend it twice to form an ‘S’ shape. Bring the longer end

down and in front, so that it holds the ‘S’ curve in place. Now comes the trickiest part of theprocess. Take the long end of the tie and form a similar ‘S’ shape before passing it through the

narrow gap behind the other end. This creates a knot and the bow should now be held securely in

place.

Finally, adjust both sides of the bow to make it symmetrical and prepare to be the envy of your

friends.

question is not entirely serious. It would be quite shocking to have to

describe a process like this one in the real exam. It does illustrate a serious

point though. Almost every diagram in IELTS Writing Task 1 contains some

vocabulary in the form of labels. The vocabulary is there to help you, not to

make the task more complex. So be grateful for all those labels!

The diagram shows the growth cycle of a volcanic island. Write a 150-word reportfor a university lecturer describing the main features of the cycle.


The diagram illustrates a natural process in which a volcanic island grows from beneath the sea,

explodes, and then eventually sinks to become an underwater reef. The process is divided into

nine stages.

In the first two stages, called the ‘preshield’ and ‘protoshield’ stages, a mountain gradually builds

under the surface of the sea. In the third or ‘explosive’ phase, hydro-explosions occur which

deposit a cone of ash. A large number of cinder cones then pile up to form a ‘shield’ on top of the

volcano.

This shield gradually erodes and subsides to form reefs below the surface of the sea. However,

there may be ongoing volcanic activity including lava flows. By the time of the ‘coral atoll’ stage,

the original form of the volcano has disappeared, and the whole structure sinks further under the

sea during the ‘guyot’ stage.

In summary, huge volcanoes rise and fall under the sea in a natural process known as the

volcanic island growth cycle.

200 words by grouping some stages together and leaving out small details where possible. The

introduction includes an overall description that clearly signals what the body of the report will

contain.

Coherence and cohesion: The body of the report groups the natural process into two paragraphs

rather than attempt to describe each of the nine stages separately. Events are clearly sequenced

and summarised.

Lexical resource: The candidate uses vocabulary from the diagram but transforms it where

necessary to fit a sentence: erosion > erodes; subsidence > subsides. The model answer also

introduces other relevant vocabulary not in the diagram such as deposits, surface and structure.

Grammatical range and accuracy: The candidate writes in complex sentences using

conjunctions and relative pronouns. Most of the sentences have multiple clauses. There are no

grammatical mistakes. In addition to the present simple tense, the present perfect tense is used to

Teacher’s Notes

This natural process diagram includes nine stages, which are difficult to

describe in detail in so few words. Therefore, you should take this

opportunity to practice grouping stages together and summarising where

possible. It’s not a good idea to write nine sentences to describe each of the

nine stages. You will simply not have the time. Writing skills like grouping

and summarising will come in very handy in the real test.

Write a 150-word report describing the proposed changes for a local committee.


The diagram shows proposals to transform Foster Road between SE 84th and 85th Avenue into atree-lined avenue that is safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

First of all, the planners propose to widen the sidewalk on both sides of the road and add bicyclelanes. This will mean reducing the number of lanes for cars and other vehicles. A pedestriancrossing will also be installed at the lower end of the street, near the gas station. This crossing willinclude an island in the middle where people can wait in safety.

In addition to the safety measures above, planners also want to plant trees along both sides of theroad. These trees will transform the appearance of the neighbourhood as well as provide vitalextra shade for pedestrians.

To summarise, under these proposals, the needs of local residents will be better served by makingFoster Road a safer and more pleasant environment.

The diagram shows how carbon moves through various stages to form a complete cycle. This

report will give a brief description of the main stages in this cycle.

First, we can see that energy from the sun is transformed into organic carbon through a process in

plants known as photosynthesis. This organic carbon is then transferred underground when

plants, and the animals that feed on them, die and decay. Some of this carbon is trapped

underground in the form of fossils and fossil fuels.

Carbon is also released back into the atmosphere, however, through various means. One is when

animals and plants respire, and another is when humans burn fossil fuels in cars and factories. All

this carbon enters the atmosphere as CO2. It is then reabsorbed by plants, and the cycle begins

again.

Overall, we can see that carbon moves in a natural cycle, although human factors may now be

affecting the balance.

Teacher’s Notes

Cycle diagrams are almost always natural processes: nature is one big

wheel after all. Usually you will find that the labels on the diagram contains

lots of unfamiliar scientific nouns. If you think you know the verb forms, then

use them as this will definitely contribute to a higher score. Otherwise you’ll

have to rely on phrases such as “in a process known as Animal

Respiration”.
