You have joined a network that is creating the next generation of innovators and problem solvers by training and retaining 100,000 new, excellent science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) teachers in American classrooms over the next 10 years.
We’re united by a single ambitious goal:
To prepare all students with the high-quality
STEM knowledge and skills needed to address our
most pressing national and global challenges. We
recognize that, while we each already do excellent
work individually/separately, a unified effort can
do much more. It can exceed the sum of its parts.
So as a network, we resolve to learn together to
deepen our capacities and realize the best potential
of each partner organization, while innovating and
collaborating together to address complex problems
for the field.
welcome To 100Kin10

In January 2011, Carnegie Corporation of New York,
Opportunity Equation, and NewSchools Venture
Fund, in partnership with the design firm IDEO,
convened a group of 28 organizations to respond
to an urgent national call to action: train 100,000
excellent STEM teachers over the next 10 years to
keep America vibrant and prosperous. Inspired by a
vision of a future where all students have the basic
STEM literacy necessary to be full participants in our
economy and democracy, this group understood that

improving STEM learning for all students requires
mobilizing a wide array of stakeholders around these
challenges and developing new, creative approaches
to tackling them.
Early partners saw the need for a new kind of network
that could set a high bar for entry; foster continuous
learning and collaboration; and enable, empower, and
inspire individual organizations to take on a piece of
the solution based on their best sense of the problem
and their unique capacity to solve it.
100Kin10’s results in less than two years demonstrate the power of the network. But, thanks to partners like you, the best is yet to come.

As of the summer of 2012, 118 partners have made commitments to train over 35,000 STEM teachers by 2015, and to support and retain tens of thousands more.
Diverse funders have agreed to direct $24M through the Funder Registry.
Former President Bill Clinton announced 100Kin10 onstage at the Clinton Global Initiative America in June 2011. Mr. Clinton also joined partners for inspirational remarks at April 2012 communications training
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan provided the keynote address for the 100Kin10 Partner Summit in March 2012. Former Senator – and sole engineer in the Senate – John Sununu thanked partners for their passion and hard word at a reception following the Summit.
We have assembled a group whose size, resources, expertise, and stature is equal to the enormous challenge and opportunity before us:
We’ve been recognized and supported by the country’s most influential policymakers, and play a role in America’s leading government-led STEM initiatives.

Moving forward, annual nomination rounds will
seek to add fewer new partners and focus on priority
commitment areas so 100Kin10 grows smartly and

We’ve heard you loud and clear - for 100Kin10 to succeed, partners need to be able to find
one another, ask questions, share resources, build connections, and collaborate. Enter
Chatter, a listserv-like communication tool powered by Salesforce. Log in, create a profile,
pose questions, ask for help, share resources, learn about opportunities offered by other
partners, post updates, publicize events, and more. It’s easy and convenient. Chatter
will even deliver a digest of a day’s or week’s worth of conversation to your inbox. It’s
smartphone-enabled, too, so you can engage on the go. Get started [embed link] today!

The 100Kin10 News Bureau helps spread the compelling stories and social impact of
100Kin10 and its partners. A team of journalism students led by John Clark at University
of North Carolina-Chapel Hill will report and publish stories based on ideas sent by
partners. This is great opportunity to share your organization’s work with a wider
audience. You can also learn more about other 100Kin10 partners and their work through
the articles the News Bureau will produce. If you have ideas for an article, please send
them to [email protected].
Open Labs occur when 100Kin10 partners open up their laboratories, boardrooms or
classrooms for STEM-specific guided tours to share best practices from their organizations
and inspire new connections. The goal of each Open Lab is to provide partners a behind-
the-scenes, real world example that helps them better understand the complex needs
of the STEM fields, spark new ideas, and take an inside look at the work of pioneers of
our movement. To leverage the presence of multiple 100Kin10 partners, Open Labs occur
alongside other events where 100Kin10 is present like the Partner Summit, Solutions
Sessions, or Clinton Global Initiative America.

The annual 100Kin10 Partner Summit is the one day each year when we all come together
to create new connections with fellow partners, learn more about exclusive network
resources, and engage with new insights and information to advance our work. According
to participants, the inaugural 2012 Partner Summit fostered a unique exchange of
expertise and evoked a special enthusiasm for collaboration toward our ambitious goals.
The day’s agenda seeks to leverage the unique skills and knowledge of 100Kin10 partners
and expert guests to create a valuable experience for all participants. The tangible feeling
of momentum and community from the day helps ensure we all stay engaged the other
364 days of the year by email, Chatter, webinar, phone, or smaller in-person groups.

Practices Worthy of Attention - PWOAs for short - are brief case studies showcasing
specific structures, strategies, and practices that a 100Kin10 partner has
implemented successfully to address a particular barrier or challenge of practice
other partners may also face. The emphasis is on providing a quick read for busy
partners, profiling an early stage innovation, and suggesting ways for partners to
adopt the practice into their own work. In this way, 100Kin10 hopes to speed up the
pace with which we can learn about successful practices to help reach our ambitious
commitments. Each PWOA also includes specific artifacts, tools, or resources used in
the highlighted practice. Seven PWOAs will be released during the Fall, so please look
out for announcements in the Newsletter
The University of Chicago leads the 100Kin10 Learning Infrastructure, a robust set of
research and technical assistance initiatives that aim to provide tools and capacity to
partners with the aim of advancing their commitments. This includes a field scan of
promising practices, facilitated conversations between partners to leverage the expertise
of the network, and a series of academic studies to determine which practices are most
effective in which contexts. Stay tuned for updates on the Learning Infrastructure on the
Learning Infrastructure page [embed link] of www.100Kin10.org.
One key initiative within the R&D infrastructure is Shared Measures, which will engage
all partners in first defining what we hold ourselves accountable for as a movement,
and then tracking our progress towards those goals over time, both individually and
collectively. Partners will help design the process and, once it is established, all will
regularly contribute data and benefit from the insights that emerge.

Solution Sessions bring partners together with STEM experts and researchers for a full-
day event to apply their experience to shared problems of practice and develop individual
or collective action plans. The University of Chicago coordinates the engaging events with
ongoing input from an ad hoc committee of 100Kin10 partners.
If you are seeking an opportunity to expose more of your staff members to fellow
100Kin10 partners from around the country as well as non-partner STEM experts and
researchers, Solutions Sessions are the ideal resource. For those unable to attend, a
Solution Session Digest will capture key discussion points, proposed solutions, and
insights from the day, and will link readers to a continuing conversation on Chatter.
Registration and event information will appear in the Newsletter and we welcome your
ideas for future topics. Partner organizations may attend as many Solution Sessions as
they wish. These events are free of charge but participants cover their own travel and
accommodation costs. Participants will receive agendas, additional logistical information,
brief pre-readings and an organizational profile questionnaire by email before the event.

hoW do i make the most of this opportunity?Apply for and hold a MeetUp with fellow partners.Consider a Joint Planning Grant to continue collaboration.
MeetUp Grants make available up to $4,000 to cover travel or other costs so partners
can literally “meet up” in person to learn from one another to advance 100Kin10
commitments, hatch a new idea for solving a shared challenge, or explore early stage
collaboration. If you have started a conversation with one or more fellow partners at an
event or over Chatter and see real value in bringing your teams together to share best
practices, jointly problem solve, and collaborate to better fulfill 100Kin10 commitments,
here’s your chance!
Please review the streamlined application [embed link] and get started. MeetUp Grants
will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the exhaustion of available
annual funding, and each partner is eligible for up to three MeetUp Grants per fiscal year.
Remember that including more than one other partner will increase both the likelihood
of a successful application and the size of the potential award. All partners involved with
a MeetUp share their experiences and the outputs from the gathering with the broader
100Kin10 network by producing a brief report.
AUSL and University of Washington applied and received funding for a MeetUp in Seattle to enable mutual learning.
in detail 23
Joint Planning Grants provide up to $25,000 for two or more partners to work
across the 100Kin10 network in novel, collaborative ways that build on each other’s
commitments. These grants differ from Meet-Up Grants in that applicants must
explain up-front how they plan to collaborate on a concrete piece of work that will
further the goals of 100Kin10. Where Meet-Up grants support partner-to-partner
networking to advance individual goals, Joint Planning Grants support the design of
shared plans for work among several partners.
For example, a Meet-Up Grant could cover travel and meeting expenses for all of
the Colorado 100Kin10 partners to discuss policies and practices that are barriers to
systemic coherence in STEM education. If the participating partners then decided
they wanted to develop a coherent statewide approach to STEM education utilizing
the strengths of all the partners, they could apply for a Joint Planning Grant to
support dedicated time from leaders of each organization to create such a plan
together. If the plan resulted in a promising ongoing collaboration, they could apply
for additional, larger amounts of funding for the project from the 100Kin10 Registry.
A Joint Planning Grant is not a prerequisite to applying for funds from the Registry;
partners have asked for support to develop their ideas for joint projects within the
network, and the Joint Planning Grants provide capacity to do that.
Please review the streamlined application [embed link] and get started. Joint Planning
Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis until the exhaustion of
available annual funding, and each partner is eligible for up to two Joint Planning
Grants per fiscal year. Remember that including more than one other partner will
increase both the likelihood of a successful application and the potential size of the
award. Applications should detail the product or program that will result from the
Joint Planning Grant, and how it will solve problems and accelerate progress toward
100Kin10’s overarching goals. We also ask that partners commit to sharing their
experience with the Joint Planning Grant process with the broader 100Kin10 network.

100Kin10 partners have the exclusive opportunity to submit funding proposals to the
100Kin10 Registry, one of several potential public and private funding sources to support
the fulfillment of ambitious commitments. The first fund launched in early 2012 with
15 funders committed to distribute a total of $24 million through the Registry. 100Kin10
will continue to pursue additional funds in the years ahead to expand resources for the
network.
It is important to note that participating funders maintain total independence of decision-
making in choosing which partner applications to fund, so partners should carefully
review the funding guidelines of participating funders. Please visit 100Kin10registry.org,
consult the FAQs, or contact [email protected] with any questions.
Three sets of partners - North Carolina New Schools and the Kenan Fellows; Google and Broad Institute; and Woodrow Wilson and the University of Indianapolis - have submitted joint proposals to the Funder Registry.

100Kin10 designed the network’s engagement opportunities with extensive partner input to support a rich partner
experience – to learn together, to work together, and to move forward together toward our shared goal. These opportunities
offer you the flexibility to engage at a variety of depths based on what grabs your interest, meets your needs, and matches
the bandwidth you have available. There is no limit to how many of these you can engage in – or how creatively you can flow
from one to another.
Here are a few examples that show how a partner might combine various opportunities and resources. These are purely
illustrative; we encourage you to find your own pathways of engagement and to think of these resources like Legos: a finite
set of pieces that you can combine creatively to build a practically limitless array of creative, sound structures.comBining PArTner resoUrces

to 100Kin10 to run an Open
Lab, which covers the cost of
hosting an in-person workshop
to walk through the development
and demonstrate the use of
rubrics. After the Open Lab, the
conversation is continued offline
and you are asked to speak at
another partner’s event. You
receive valuable input on how to
expand your set of offerings.
At the following year’s annual
Summit, you join a panel
with two fellow partners on
innovative uses of technology for
STEM teacher training.
