CHIEF EXECUTIVE MESSAGEWhen talking to the families of our patients, I often hear them describe themselves as being part of the Hospital ‘family’. This idea of family includes everyone from the caring nurse to the dedicated researcher, the skilled surgeon, kind volunteer, the helpful ward clerk and the friendly cafeteria staff serving much-needed coffee to tired parents.

Our close-knit partnership with the community isn’t a recent development; it stretches right back to 1878 when Mrs Browne, wife of a state member of parliament, gathered together a group of ladies to discuss how they might establish the first children’s hospital in Sydney.

They approached the Premier of NSW, Sir Henry Parkes, who committed to contributing half the establishment costs, £4,250, if a similar amount was donated by the community.

Fast forward 136 years and we are still working side-by-side with the community to constantly challenge the boundaries of paediatric health care and ultimately to save precious lives.

This Annual Review outlines some of the important achievements of the year, based on key areas where your support is vital – care, facilities, research and staff.

The stories of Tyree, Sophie, Alyssa and Chase are nothing short of inspirational. We are also showcasing some of the staff who have been instrumental in their care. This team approach is so vital to our work and, as a critical part of this team, your support is our lifeblood.

Thank you for your continued support and for partnering with us to fulfil our important mission of improving the health and wellbeing of children through clinical care, advocacy, research and education. Together we are making a lasting difference.

CAREThe Children’s Hospital at Westmead is the largest paediatric hospital in NSW, world-renowned for its high-quality, specialised treatment of sick children. In the past year, the Hospital has cared for 32,000 inpatients, 54,000 emergency cases and provided 734,000 outpatient appointments to connect sick and injured children with the very best specialists.

Many of the patients we treat have rare, complex or life-threatening illnesses and are referred to us by other hospitals where the expertise to treat them does not exist.

Patients like Mollyjane, who is ‘one in seven billion’. She suffers from a disease that has only been recorded in 32 other children in the past 65 years.

Doctors at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead are complimenting intense clinical care for Mollyjane, including 20 operations to date, with research into her rare disease. Mollyjane has been a patient of the Hospital since she fell gravely ill as a newborn baby and wasn’t expected to survive beyond the first week of life. None of the children that have been recorded with this disease have lived as long as Mollyjane, so she is rewriting the record books at just four years of age.

Despite her illness, Mollyjane is a happy and chatty girl who loves singing and going to the zoo.

Nyah is another young patient who has entered the record books this year as the first baby ever born at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Nyah was diagnosed in-utero with Hypo-Plastic Left Heart Syndrome, meaning one half of her heart was under-developed.

Doctors were so concerned about Nyah’s health that they invited obstetricians from Westmead Hospital to perform a caesarean in one of our operating theatres. This allowed life-saving cardiac surgery to commence within minutes of Nyah’s birth.

After eight major operations in the first few months of life to reconstruct her heart, Nyah is now home with her parents and is expected to have a normal, healthy childhood.

These success stories are only possible through the ongoing support of donors who help to fund our life-saving work in many key areas.

Seeing Tyree as such a relaxed and happy baby on the eve of his first birthday, it’s difficult to believe that he has had such a rough start to life.

When Tyree was born in August 2013, his skin was blue and he was not breathing or crying. He was immediately ventilated and rushed to the Grace Centre for Newborn Care at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

His Mum, Anna, knew her baby boy would be born sick – he was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a serious heart defect, during her pregnancy – but nothing could quite prepare her for the tough journey ahead.

Brave Tyree had his first open heart surgery at just three days old. Surgeons operated on his tiny heart, which was barely the size of a 20-cent coin, helping it to filter blood to keep him alive.

At the tender age of seven weeks old, Tyree’s parents, Anna and Tran were finally able to take him home for the first time. He had endured five operations in that short time, after suffering a rare and serious infection.

He returned to the Hospital at eight months of age for another complicated cardiac operation to close a large hole in his heart and to have an artificial pulmonary valve inserted. To the relief of his parents, Tyree’s latest surgery was a great success and his health has improved dramatically now that his heart can circulate oxygen through his blood more effectively.

“The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has made an amazing difference to my family - the difference between my son surviving or dying,” Tyree’s Mum, Anna, said.

“Throughout everything, Tyree has always been happy and resilient. He was never sooky or upset, always happy to play and be around family.”

“We hope the future will be bright and healthy for our son. Perhaps when he grows up he will

become a heart specialist so he can save lives just as his life was saved.”

FACILITIESHaving the right facilities and medical equipment is a crucial part of being able to provide the best care. New techniques and technologies developed on an international scale can only be used to improve the health of patients if doctors and other hospital staff have the right equipment and facilities to support their work.

With new technologies emerging and as old equipment and facilities need upgrading, we rely heavily on donors to help keep our Hospital at a world-class standard.

Donors have helped to fund a range of new facilities this year, including contributing to the Kids Care Centre within the Emergency Department.

The Centre treats triage category four and five emergency patients with non-life threatening illnesses and injuries. This area is ideal for care and observation and frees up beds in the ED for more urgent cases, such as those arriving by helicopter or ambulance. Emergency waiting times have been reduced as a result of this initiative, especially during peak afternoon and evening periods.

The Heart Centre for Children was able to upgrade their cardiac ultrasound machine this year thanks to the generosity of donors. This machine is vital for diagnosing and treating heart conditions as it gives doctors a clear view of the structures of the heart, including the chambers, valves, veins and arteries, and enables them to monitor blood flow and pin-point problems without the need for invasive surgery.

The Heart Centre for Children treats over 3,500 patients each year and each patient needs multiple cardiac ultrasounds as part of their ongoing treatment.

This year the Hospital received a substantial bequest from a donor who was passionate about leaving a lasting legacy to improve child health. With the money she donated, we were able to install 23 new bedside monitors within the Hospital and upgrade 224 existing monitors, ensuring high-quality and consistent care for all patients.

Sophie with her Mum, Meg

Sophie’s bright smile and her love of music and movies make her just like any other teenage girl. But behind Sophie’s beautiful smile is a story of courage and heartbreak.

16-year-old Sophie was diagnosed with brain cancer when a tumour, larger than a golf ball, was detected during a brain scan in January 2011, soon after her 13th birthday.

Sophie’s diagnosis came as a great shock to her family, especially as her brother, Hamish, was already battling another rare form of brain tumour. Sadly, he lost his battle with cancer in 2012, at just 15 years old.

After her devastating diagnosis, Sophie’s life soon became a blur of tests, treatments and long stays in the Camperdown Ward of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. In between rounds of chemotherapy, Sophie’s Mum, Meg, enjoyed the simple pleasure of having her family together around the dinner table at home.

“Cancer treatment saves children’s lives but it also takes away so much – time together as a family, months of schooling and, ultimately, part of their childhood,” Sophie’s Mum, Meg, said.

Brave Sophie battled cancer and won, given the ‘all-clear’ in late 2011. A fitting celebration for Sophie was meeting the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during their special visit to Bear Cottage, when she was chosen to present them with a special artwork made by Bear Cottage patients.

“Meeting the royal couple was amazing, it was just unforgettable,” Sophie said.

Now that her treatment is over, Sophie is often mistakenly asked how her chemotherapy is going as the hair she lost is not expected to grow back, due to alopecia. She looks stunning in her beautiful collection of bandannas and head wraps that compliment her fun sense of fashion.

The future looks bright for Sophie, who has swapped long days in hospital for playing hockey, attending

Canteen camps, being her Mum’s right hand in the kitchen and working towards studying to become a midwife.

“Teamwork at the Hospital is paramount as there are so many different facets in the care of sick children. We all have different specialities and areas of expertise. Together we can make a real

difference to patients like Sophie when they really need our help.”

Katherine Stephen – Clinical Nurse Consultant, Bone Marrow Transplants

“Multi-disciplinary care is the cornerstone of excellent care for children with cancer. Many different specialists are needed to get the best outcomes for patients and their families. I have been here 25 years and over that time I have treated some of

the sickest children in the Hospital.”

Dr Stewart Kellie – Oncologist

“It was important that we ensured that, even through the most difficult times, Sophie and her family remained informed yet hopeful. It is lovely as a nurse to work in a supportive team

where we all are striving to get the best outcomes for our patients.”

Michele Casey – Nurse

“Each member of the health care team is able to use their own specialist skills for the greater benefit of the complex

patients that we treat. I thrive on knowing that I am able to help children to recover and get them back to enjoying life like they

used to before becoming sick.”

RESEARCHThe Kids Research Institute, the research arm of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead undertakes research across six key areas – cancer, genomics rare diseases, chronic disease, infectious diseases, clinical sciences and population health and indigenous research.

The Kids Research Institute is fortunate to have the support of donors who have the foresight to recognise the incredible potential of research and how, with investment, it is changing the face of paediatric health care on a global scale.

Our Hospital has long invested in vital research, dating back to the significant discovery of the impact of rubella on the developing foetus in 1942 by Dr Norman Gregg at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children.

An exciting focus of the Kids Research Institute this year centres on genomics rare disorders. This is an important area of research as genetic conditions affect around 400,000 Australian children and account for up to 50 per cent of admissions to children’s hospitals.

Their vision is that one day every child may receive effective, personalised treatment based on their unique genetic profile, no matter how rare or complex their condition.

We are in a unique position to exploit new scientific and technological advances to lead global research into genetic rare diseases and make a real difference for children and their families.

As part of the largest tertiary paediatric institution in Australia, clinicians see more children with rare diseases than any other entity in the nation.

Most researchers from Kids Research Institute are also clinicians. The issues they see every day on the wards inform the research they do, and their clinical work means new discoveries can very quickly be translated into clinical care. This has been described as a ‘bench to bedside’ approach that is critical to the effectiveness and relevance of research.

Many questions about child health remain unanswered and new challenges are presented every day. With your ongoing support, cures to life-threatening illnesses could be just around the corner.

ALYSSA'SSTORY

33

Page 36: TOGETHER' 2014 - Sydney Children's Hospital · researcher, the skilled surgeon, kind volunteer, the helpful ward clerk and the friendly cafeteria staff serving much-needed coffee

It’s amazing to watch Alyssa hula-hoop with a grin from ear-to-ear, especially considering she was born with a range of medical conditions, including a spine defect.

Born with VACTERL Syndrome, Alyssa was diagnosed as having a range of significant health problems, affecting her vertebrae, limbs, heart, kidneys and other vital organs.

Alyssa is one very special girl, described by her Mum, Elaine, as “a jigsaw puzzle that wasn’t completed during pregnancy”, needing expert doctors at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to help her survive.

At just six years old, Alyssa has already endured 17 operations and is expected to face more in the coming years. Her case has inspired other families with a child with VACTERL Syndrome, with the Gillespie family often called upon to give advice to others facing a similar journey.

A huge team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead have treated Alyssa since she was transferred to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead by NETS ambulance as a sick newborn baby needing urgent surgery.

“Each and every staff member has played an important role throughout our journey so far. So many people have gone above and beyond the call of duty to help and support us when we need it most,” Elaine said.

Despite her challenges in life, Alyssa is a happy and relaxed girl who, quite simply, loves life.

“Life today is not what we expected but we take each day as it comes and do the best we can. On the outside Alyssa looks and acts like any normal child her age but inside her jigsaw puzzle is still not complete,” Elaine said.

“Our daughter is one amazing little girl and we are so blessed she’s ours.”

STAFFOur reputation as one of the world’s great children’s hospitals is not based on the equipment we have or the buildings we work in, it has because of our people. All staff contribute to the positive experience that families expect when they trust us with the care of their precious sick child.

We are committed to recruiting, retaining, managing and motivating the best staff to complement our services and facilities. Staff are at the centre of our very high standards of care and our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of children.

While we are a public hospital that is funded by the government, we often turn to donors to assist us to employ extra staff in key positions that will really make a difference to our quality of care and to run programs that support sick children and their families along the road to recovery.

Donations have been used this year to employ a range of specially trained Child Life Therapists and Music Therapists who are working across the Hospital, especially in areas where children are being treated for serious conditions, such as cancer or burns.

Child Life Therapy is based around play, which is extremely important for all children, especially those who are seriously ill. Play is the language that children use to make sense of the world and is a powerful tool for helping children to cope with their illness and to ease anxiety.

Likewise, Music Therapy has a calming and relaxing effect that helps children to manage pain and anxiety. It encourages socialisation, communication and motor development.

Donations funded a Social Worker for Oncology this year. Having a dedicated Social Worker for young cancer patients and their families makes a real difference to their care and allows them to be fully supported through their cancer journey.

Staff at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead who have their positions funded by donations are humbled by the support they receive from the community and are grateful that donors are recognising and supporting their vital work.

CHASE'SSTORY

43

Page 46: TOGETHER' 2014 - Sydney Children's Hospital · researcher, the skilled surgeon, kind volunteer, the helpful ward clerk and the friendly cafeteria staff serving much-needed coffee

At just eight years old, Chase is a busy boy. He loves watching rugby, pop music, hunting for bargains at garage sales, swimming, playing the piano and reading Harry Potter books.

He certainly makes the most of life, especially considering he was born with a severe form of spina bifida, leaving his spinal cord exposed and damaged. Spina bifida occurs early in a pregnancy when the two sides of a baby’s spine fail to join together, leaving an open area. For Chase’s Mum, Narcis, her pregnancy was a worrying time when she was told that her unborn child would suffer from this serious birth defect.

Chase sometimes needs a wheelchair to get around, but mostly is able to walk, a result of his determination and ongoing intensive physiotherapy sessions at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. His doctors are currently considering orthopaedic surgery for Chase to give him more movement in his left foot.

Chase and his parents have never let his disability get in the way, encouraging him to play wheelchair basketball and to become the goalkeeper in school yard soccer games.

“I am known as ‘the wall’ when we play soccer because I am so good at blocking goals. But I will only play for the boys team of course, not the girls,” cheeky Chase said.

Chase and his family are forever grateful for the care and support they have received from The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

“For us, the team at the Hospital are our problem solvers. They tackle Chase’s condition head-on and take innovative approaches to ensure he gets the most out of life. They have a bright outlook, wisdom, compassion and continue to give us hope,” said Chase’s Mum, Narcis.

“They are key people in our lives whom we never dreamed of needing to know but we are

now deeply grateful for.”

“The significance of the different people involved in Chases' care cannot be understated. Each team member is reliant on the others to ensure that positive progress continues. To get a

child up and walking for the first time is very special for families after building a relationship of trust with them.”

Sean Hogan – Orthotist

“Kids with complex conditions require input from many specialists. I have been Chase’s Physiotherapist since he was born and I will continue to care for him until he leaves school. I enjoy

seeing patients grow up and make the most of opportunities in life with our guidance and support.”

Suzie Taylor – Physiotherapist

“The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is a specialist service that aims to improve the health and well-being of children and adolescents with disabilities, like Chase. Being part of a team

that can make a difference to the lives of kids like Chase is fantastic and inspires me every day. “

Dr Antoinette Botman – Paediatric Rehabilitation Consultant

“I feel very lucky to be part of such a fantastic team where we are all valued as professionals. The respect and acknowledgement we receive for our work and dedication to our patients makes caring

for children like Chase a real privilege.”

BEAR COTTAGEBear Cottage, located in Manly, is the only children’s hospice dedicated to providing families of children with a life-limiting illness world-class medical care in a relaxed and homely setting.

In the past year alone, Bear Cottage has cared for more than 220 children who have a serious illness that means they are not expected to reach adulthood. For these children there is no magic cure, but Bear Cottage aims to help them and their families make the most of their precious time together.

Bear Cottage was thrust into the international spotlight this year when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited and spent some time with staff and families. This visit showcased to the world, what we already know – Bear Cottage is an inspiring place filled with very special people. It also highlighted the quality of our services and enhanced our capacity to collaborate with other children’s hospices around the world through a global ‘community of best practice’.

This year we have also transformed our care by introducing Clinical Nurse Specialists to the team at Bear Cottage. This is an exciting initiative that aims to further cater to the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of sick children and their families. It also represents a giant leap forward for the emerging speciality of Paediatric Palliative Care, especially when it comes to integration with community services.

Families do not pay to stay at Bear Cottage, thanks to the generous support of the community. Bear Cottage was established in 2001 by donated funds and, although we have recently received some government funding, we rely heavily on donated funds to continue to provide special care for children and families.

Despite many sad times over the years, Bear Cottage has an irrepressible spirit. It is an uplifting place where life is for living and treasured memories are nurtured.

20 YEARS AT WESTMEAD -

It’s hard to believe that next year will mark 20 years since our Hospital relocated from

Camperdown to Westmead.

Since The Children’s Hospital at Westmead first opened in 1995, we have treated over one million

sick and injured children. Our work has touched the lives of countless families from across NSW, giving

them hope for the future.

Paediatric health care has changed dramatically over the past two decades, but our strong focus

on restoring health to precious young lives remains the same.

We look forward to celebrating 20 years at Westmead in 2015 and thank you for supporting

us every step of the way.
