SWEET EXPERIENCES IN HASSELT AND ZONHOVEN

The Capital of Taste is a city for those who love to enjoy life and prefer being pampered. This welcoming place, tasteful and hospitable, helps you feel at home immediately. Hasselt is an ideal city to be explored by strolling around. Exciting shopping streets, cosy terra-ces, surprising alley short-cut ..., but also interesting museums, sparkling culture and relaxing green areas.

In 2015 we can follow the Happiness Route to start looking for an even deeper sense of taste in the city of Hasselt, to discover the taste of happiness. The Hasselt Fashion Museum takes you for a look behind the screens in the world of top designer Paul Smith. We also recommend you the Sunday City Pass, for a relaxing Sunday out.

Looking for quietness, relaxation or healthy outdoor movement? Zonhoven is the place to be in that case! Discover the unique ‘De Wijers’ lake district, where the quiet beauty of nature invites you on a surprising exploration along winding paths where rare species of fauna and flora still survive. Are you hungry or thirsty after so much walking? The cosy village centre will soothe your needs and offers excellent cafés and restaurants, where you can taste local specialties.

JENEVER LIVES!

It is almost beyond words when you imagine how a Belgium national distilled drink was developed while experimenting with a small berry full of medicinal characteristics. But once you understand the full story and become jenever wise, you are able to taste the difference and learn to appreciate it!

For more than 500 years, distillers experimented with ingredients and tech-niques, in search of the perfect jenever variant. But how do you store, pour and taste your jenever? What is your favourite flavour? And what is the diffe-rence between jenever and gin? In the renovated Jenever Museum, you will discover why the jenever drink is called ‘jenever’. You learn why it was not invented by anyone in particular and also in which way it determined history. Throughout the museum you move with both body and soul, using all your senses. This one is to learn more about it, and this one is to not get used to it!

You can also visit the tasting room without a museum ticket. You can always discover something new in the fine selection of jenevers from the Low Lands. You should definitely try out our tasty discovery tours.

OPENING HOURSAPRIL TIL JUNE & AUGUST TIL OCTOBER: every 2nd Saturday of the month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. JULY: on Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The nature reserve of De Wijers extends over Hasselt, Zonhoven, Houthalen-Helchteren, Heusden-Zolder, Diepenbeek, Lummen and Genk. It is a unique re-gion with one thousand and one lakes, once dug for the flourishing fish farming activity under the impulse of the Herkenrode Abbey. A permanent exhibition at the Heidestrand recreation resort illustrates how the Zonhoven fish farmers, inspired by the inhabitants of the Herkenrode Abbey, shaped this landscape and by doing so created an impressive micro cosmos with rare plant and animal species. Head for exploration along the educational walking path with bird watching cabins, educational panels and some interactive installations. From April on, you will even be able to have a look on the lakes from above, without getting in a plane. The 15 metres high watch tower offers a wonderful panoramic view on the many lakes. If you’d like to know how fish farmers work, you can pay a visit to one of the Zonhoven fish farmers, who will show and explain you all about the fish and fish farming. Those who love long walks can enjoy the long distance walk leading through De Wijers. If you prefer biking, you can follow the Wijer routes of the outstanding Limburg cycle routes network, or be guided by digital cycle routes, which you can easily download as app onto your device.

de Wijers

The quietness found on the purple heath of De Teut nature reserve is ideal to experience the century old history of this area. Walk in coni-ferous woods, stroll across the heath areas along pools reflecting the sun light, or explore the brook valleys around the Roosterbeek. Even our prehistoric ancestors appreciated this area: you can still recogni-se the traces they left on the monumental ‘holsteen’.

If you are not a great expert in following walking routes, you can start going on exploration with experienced guides during the monthly walks. Each walk has a specific theme (mushrooms, amazing plants, water world, ... ). The dates of the theme walks are listed in the Toerisme Zonhoven walking calendar.

LIMBURG CYCLE ROUTES NETWORKA province does not receive the title of ‘cycling paradise’ without a good reason. First of all, there should be a comfortable cycling route network, but extra accom-modation such as cyclist cafés and cycling friendly lodgings are also one of the conditions. Hasselt and Zonhoven both have an abundance of these accommoda-tions. That’s because we really like to slow down at the right moment. Try it out yourself. We bet it will be an unforgettable experience! Cycling in Limburg is quite a different experience: there is plenty of variety, from cosy flat strokes along rivers and canals to challenging parts torturing your calves or steep downhill.
