Task 5: Campus Conversation

The Timing for Task 5:

Listening

Question

Preparation

Spoken Response

60-90 seconds

20 seconds

60 seconds

Format:

Conversation between a man and a woman (two students, a student and a faculty

member, or two faculty members).

One person has a problem related to life on campus - classes, majors, university

buildings etc. (See Campus Vocabulary on page 18-26)

Two solutions will be discussed.

After the conversation, you will see the question. The question will remain on screen

while you are preparing and speaking.

Here is a typical Task 5 question:

Skills Needed for Task 5

Understanding a campus situation

Summarizing the situation quickly

Making a recommendation and supporting it with clear reasons

Task 5 is a two part question:

1. Summarize the problem (and try to mention both solutions).

2. Choose which solution you think is best and give reasons for your choice.

Let’s look at the summary part first!

The speakers are discussing two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Briefly

describe the problem. Then state which of the solutions you recommend and why.

Page 5: TOEFL® Speaking - agos.co.jp · PDF fileTOEFL® Speaking Lesson 2 3 The 6 Speaking Tasks - Review Put the tasks below in the correct order. The first one has been done for you. Task

TOEFL® Speaking Lesson 2

5

Listening Strategy

The structure of the Task 5 conversations is very predictable:

1. State problem

2. Discuss solution 1, advantages and disadvantages

3. Discuss solution 2, advantages and disadvantages

! The solutions can come from either person. You need to listen carefully to both people.

Here is a summary of what you should listen for:

Person: Man or Woman

Problem

Solution 1

+/- Points

Solution 2

+/- Points

Listen for:

1. The problem - If you cannot understand it completely, at least try to catch what area

of the speaker’s life it involves. Is it a problem in the dormitory? In a class? With a

professor?

2. Key phrases - Pay special attention to the kinds of phrases that are used to suggest

courses of action. For example:

Why don’t you…?

Have you thought about…?

If I were you, I would….

I think you should….

3. Verbs - The two solutions are actions. If you have the verbs, you will be able to

summarize the situation adequately.

4. At least one of the solutions – you do not need to mention both solutions, but you

have to mention one of them!

5. Take very simple notes - You need to pay attention, and the more you write, the more

you will miss.

Page 6: TOEFL® Speaking - agos.co.jp · PDF fileTOEFL® Speaking Lesson 2 3 The 6 Speaking Tasks - Review Put the tasks below in the correct order. The first one has been done for you. Task

6

Summarizing the Situation

1. Keep it simple and clear, and save preparation time to think of reasons to support your

choice.

2. 20-30 seconds to summarize (30-40 seconds to state your choice and give reasons)

3. If you only understood one solution, do not even talk about the other solution!

Organizing your answer

Here is a simple way to organize the problem and solutions when you speak. This structure will

work every time.

Problem The man’s / woman’s problem is…

Solution 1 One possible solution is to… (verb)

Solution 2 The other is to… (verb)

Practice

Now we will listen to a conversation. We will then try to summarize it in 20-30 seconds. For

now, don’t worry about making a choice or thinking of reasons.

Below is a space for organizing your notes. Remember to try to catch something you can say

about the problem, no matter how general, and to listen for verbs to describe the solutions.

Were you able to state the problem and both solutions in less than 30 seconds?

Here is a transcript of the conversation. Listen again and read the transcript, paying attention

to the key words and phrases that show us how we can state the problem and solutions clearly.

Track 2

Man: Allison, you look really stressed out. What’s going on?

Woman: I am stressed…I have a group meeting in about twenty-five minutes, but I left my bag in Jeff’s room.

Man: Well, what was so important in there anyway?

Woman: I was in charge of critiquing an article and discussing it with our group…before developing our business plan. The article and my notes are in there!

Man: Oh…that sounds serious.

Woman: I know, right?

Man: Why don’t you just run to the library and see if you can copy the same article?

Woman: Hmm…you know how big of a hassle it is to get to the library from here—it’s all the way across campus. I’m not sure if I’d make it back in time.

Man: Well, it might be close…but you could always call one of the group members and just tell him you might be a little bit late…

Woman: That might work…

Man: Or…have you thought about rescheduling the meeting? If it’s that important of a meeting, it’d be better if everyone were prepared. I’m sure they’d understand since it was an accident.

Woman: Yeah, right! Do you have any idea how tough it is to coordinate four different schedules this time of year?

Man: Oh…good point.

Woman: Believe me; they would be less than impressed if I cancelled last minute like this. Surely they would think I just didn’t do the critique and needed more time…

Notice the way that the man suggests the two solutions by using these phrases:

Why don’t you run to the library…?

Have you thought about rescheduling the meeting?

Did you catch the verbs?

Run / go to the library and copy the article

Reschedule the meeting

Model summary

Here is a good summary of the woman’s problem and the two solutions:

Problem The woman’s problem is she has a meeting in 25 minutes, but she doesn’t

have an article and notes that she needs.

Solution 1 One possible solution is to go to the library and copy the article.

Solution 2 The other is to reschedule the meeting.

You can see that this is short enough to say in less than 30 seconds. You will also notice that

none of the details that the speakers discussed are mentioned.

As mentioned earlier, you must be able to make an opening statement about the nature of the

problem. What if you did not understand the woman’s problem? Here are some statements

which could be used to speak more generally about the problem if you didn’t quite understand

it.

The woman’s problem is that she is not ready for her group meeting.

The woman’s problem is that she is missing an important article.

The woman is having a problem with her study group.

The woman’s problem is that she is not prepared for an important meeting.

Practice saying the model answer with your partner or group.

Choosing a Solution and Giving Reasons

Which solution is best?

The easiest one to talk about!

Use content from the conversation to provide reasons.

You can talk about positive points of your choice and the negative points of the other choice.

Let’s listen to the conversation again and try to catch good and bad points about the two

solutions.

1. Copy the article 2. Reschedule the meeting

+ +

Use common sense or personal experience to give reasons.

If you do not understand specific strengths and weaknesses about either solution, you can use

“common sense”. You can also talk about your own experience to support you choice, as you

would on an Independent task.

On the next page is a chart with reasons to support both solutions, taken from the

conversation and from common sense and personal experience.

Model responses

Below are two model answers for this task; one for each solution.

Problem The woman’s problem is she forgot some materials that she needs for her

group meeting.

Solution 1 One possible solution is to copy the article she forgot.

Solution 2 The other is to reschedule the group meeting.

Choice Personally, I think she should go to the library and copy the article.

Reasons

First of all, she won’t be very late. I think it’s much better to be a few

minutes late than to cancel the meeting. The meeting starts in 25 minutes,

so it’s really too late to reschedule.

Also, she says that it’s too difficult to reschedule. She says it’s impossible for

all four members to find another time that they can meet.

Problem The woman’s problem is she has a meeting in 25 minutes, but she left her

bag at her friend’s house, and an article she needs is in the bag.

Solution 1 One possible solution is to go to the library and copy the article she forgot.

Solution 2 The other is to reschedule the meeting.

Choice Personally, I think she should reschedule the meeting.

Reasons

First of all, even if she copies the article, she won’t have her notes, so she

won’t be ready for the meeting. It would be a waste of everyone’s time.

I think it’s much better to be completely prepared for something than to do

a bad job, even if it is a little inconvenient for the other members.

Here are important details from the conversation that tell us the problem and the two

solutions:

Problem: there’s a mix of graduate students and undergrads…

a few of the graduate students end up doing all of the talking

Solution 1: Why don’t you speak up…

be more aggressive

Solution 2: Have you told the professor…

she might control the graduate students

she could tell you what to study on your own

And here is one way to take those details and summarize the situation:

Problem The man’s problem is that there are some graduate students in his class

who talk too much.

Solution 1 One possible solution is to be more aggressive and talk more in class.

Solution 2 The other is to tell the professor that he isn’t happy.

Let’s listen to the conversation again and try to catch good and bad points about the two

solutions.

Conversation Transcript

Woman: Hi, Jim. How’s it going?

Man: Not great! I just had my literary criticism class and, as usual, it was a waste of time.

Woman: Why’s that?

Man: The problem is that there’s a mix of graduate students and undergrads. And you know how that goes… a few of the graduate students end up doing all of the talking. Even the professor has trouble finishing her sentences!

Woman: Wow. That sounds rough.

Man: Yeah. And I’m not even one of the shy students. If the class keeps going this way, I’m going to regret taking it.

Woman: Well… like you said, you aren’t shy. Why don’t you speak up? If you talk, maybe other students will be encouraged to speak, too. Be aggressive!

Man: You’re right. I should try harder to talk in class. I guess I’m worried that I’ll end up being as bad as one of the grads!

Woman: Have you told the professor how you feel? She might control the graduate students more if she knew that some undergrads weren’t happy with the class. Or she could at least tell you what to study on your own to make up for the time that you are losing in class.

Man: I guess I could talk to her. I don’t want Professor Mays to think I’m complaining, though. I’ll have her for three more courses before I graduate and I want to keep a good relationship with her.

Model Answers

Problem The man’s problem is that the graduate students in his literary criticism

class talk too much.

Solution 1 One possible solution is to start talking more in the class.

Solution 2 The other is to complain about the situation to his professor.

Choice Personally, I think he should speak up in the class.

Reasons

First of all, it’s good experience for him to challenge more advanced

students. He can learn a lot by participating in discussions with the graduate

students.

Also, the man says he wants to keep a good relationship with the professor.

He will have her for other classes in the future, so he shouldn’t complain

about such a small problem now.

Problem The man’s problem is that some graduate students in his class do all of the

talking, so undergraduates are not able to participate.

Solution 1 One possible solution is for the man to be aggressive and speak up during

the class.

Solution 2 The other is to tell his professor that he is not happy in the class.

Choice Personally, I think he should talk to his professor.

Reasons

First of all, even if the man talks more, it doesn’t mean that the grad

students will talk less. It will just make the problem worse for everyone.

Also, the professor will probably understand why he is unhappy. She is

aware of how much talking the graduate students are doing, and she may be

able to do something to make the class more balanced.
