BRETHREN, I appeal to you by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree and that there be no dissensions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brethren. What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispos and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized any one else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

At that time, Jesus saw a great throng; and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick. When it was evening, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a lonely place, and the day is now over; send the crowds away to go into the villages and buy food for themselves." Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat." They said to him, "We have only five loaves here and two fish." And he said, "Bring them here to me." Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass; and taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and broke and gave the loaves to the crowds. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve baskets full of the broken pieces left over. And those who ate were about five

thousand men, besides women and children. Then he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds.

NEXT BYZANTINE MUSIC WORKSHOP IS SATURDAY AUGUST 27TH AT 10:30 AM IN CHURCH

For those interested in learning more about the chanting that we do in our Greek Orthodox Churches, we are meeting to go over very basic ways of singing in this tradition. We will begin with humming the isons which anyone can do; and we will go over some of the beautiful chants of our church like the 'Christos Anesti' which is sung at Pascha. We will also discuss how to follow the lead chanter; and a similar concept of 'question and answer' style hymnography. This discussion and sing along will be lead by Tony Thompson, assistant chanter at St. Barbara. If you are interested in participating in this program offering you can Email Anthony Thompson at tony_man@mac.com For a brief bio see below: Tony Thompson is a professional musician and chanter at St. Barbara GOC. He attended UNCG where he studied both music and business. Recently, Tony earned a playing certificate from the American Guild of Organists(2014). In 2013 he was the official salaried organist for Holy Trinity GOC. He has participated in the Raleigh Convocation Choir performing Sacred Choral Music(classical master works). He has also sung in the Triangle Orthodox Choir. Currently, he sometimes works as a professional interim organist /vocalist for Anglican churches. Other places of service as choir master, chanter and chorister: parishes include The Dormition of the Theotokos, St. George(High Point), All Saints Antiochian, St. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Catholic Church, St. Gregory the Great Orthodox Church in America. Tony has chanted with the much celebrated Byzantine Choir from New York, Romeiko(2003 season) and chanted regulatory at St Sophia Cathedral in Washington, DC.(2003).

Θεομητορική εορτή της Χριστιανοσύνης. Εορτάζεται κάθε χρόνο στις 15 Αυγούστου με το Νέο Ημερολόγιο και στις 28 Αυγούστου

με το Παλαιό (Παλαιoημερολογίτες). Στην Ορθόδοξη Χριστιανική Εκκλησία ο εορτασμός της Κοίμησης της Θεοτόκου περιλαμβάνει

κατά πρώτο λόγο το θάνατο και την ταφή της Παναγίας και κατά δεύτερο την ανάσταση και τη μετάστασή της στους ουρανούς.

Για την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου δεν υπάρχουν πληροφορίες από την Καινή Διαθήκη. Γι’ αυτήν μαθαίνουμε από τις διηγήσεις

σημαντικών εκκλησιαστικών ανδρών, όπως των Αγίου Ιωάννου του Θεολόγου, Διονυσίου του Αρεοπαγίτη, Μόδεστου Ιεροσολύμων,

Ανδρέα Κρήτης, Γερμανού Κωνσταντινουπόλεως, Ιωάννη Δαμασκηνού κ.ά., καθώς και από τα σχετικά τροπάρια της εκκλησιαστικής

υμνολογίας. Στα κείμενα αυτά διασώζεται η «αρχαία και αληθεστάτη» παράδοση της Εκκλησίας γι’ αυτό το Θεομητορικό γεγονός.

Έτσι, λοιπόν, κατά την εκκλησιαστική παράδοση, η μητέρα του Ιησού Χριστού, Μαρία (η Θεοτόκος και Παναγία), πληροφορήθηκε

τον επικείμενο θάνατό της από έναν άγγελο τρεις ημέρες προτού αυτός συμβεί και άρχισε να προετοιμάζεται κατάλληλα.

Προσεύχεται στο όρος των Ελαιών και δίνει τα υπάρχοντά της σε δύο γειτόνισσές της χήρες. Επειδή κατά την ημέρα της Κοίμησής

της δεν ήταν όλοι οι Απόστολοι στα Ιεροσόλυμα, καθώς κήρυτταν «απανταχού γης», μια νεφέλη τους άρπαξε και τους έφερε κοντά

της. Μοναδικός απών ο απόστολος Θωμάς.

Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου συνέβη στο σπίτι του Ευαγγελιστή Ιωάννη, στο οποίο διέμενε η μητέρα του Θεανθρώπου. Αφού της

έκλεισαν τα μάτια, οι Απόστολοι μετέφεραν το νεκροκρέβατό της στον κήπο της Γεθσημανής, όπου και την έθαψαν. Κατά τη

μεταφορά του λειψάνου της, φανατικοί Ιουδαίοι αποπειράθηκαν να ανατρέψουν το νεκροκρέβατό της, αλλά τυφλώθηκαν. Μόνο ένας

από αυτούς κατόρθωσε να το ακουμπήσει, αλλά μια αόρατη ρομφαία του έκοψε τα χέρια.

Μοναδικός απών από την κηδεία της υπήρξε, όπως προαναφέραμε, ο Απόστολος Θωμάς. Όταν μετά από τρεις ημέρας πήγε στον

τάφο της, βρήκε μόνο τα εντάφια. Προφανώς, η Παναγία είχε αναστηθεί. Πάνω στον τάφο της χτίστηκε μεγαλοπρεπής ναός, που

αποδίδεται στην Αγία Ελένη. Μετά την καταστροφή του, ο αυτοκράτορας του Βυζαντίου Μαρκιανός (450-457) με τη δεύτερη σύζυγό

του Πουλχερία έχτισαν ένα νέο ναό, που υπάρχει μέχρι σήμερα. Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου εορταζόταν αρχικά στις 13 Αυγούστου και

από το 460 στις 15 Αυγούστου.

Μεταξύ της Ορθόδοξης και της Καθολικής Εκκλησίας υπάρχει δογματική διαφορά σχετικά με την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου. Η

Καθολική Εκκλησία πιστεύει στο δόγμα της ενσώματης ανάληψης της Θεοτόκου (Assumptio Beatae Mariae Virginis), που

οριστικοποιήθηκε με την αποστολική εγκύκλιο του Πάπα Πίου IB' «Munificentissimus Deus» (1 Νοεμβρίου 1950). Αντίθετα, η

Ορθόδοξη Εκκλησία κάνει λόγο πρώτα για Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου, δηλαδή πραγματικό θάνατο (χωρισμό ψυχής και σώματος) και

στη συνέχεια για μετάσταση της Θεοτόκου, δηλαδή ανάσταση (ένωση ψυχής και σώματος) και ανάληψή της κοντά στον Υιόν της.

Κατά την εκκλησιαστική παράδοση, της εορτής της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου προηγείται νηστεία, η οποία καθιερώθηκε τον 7ο

αιώνα. Αρχικά ήταν χωρισμένη σε δύο περιόδους: πριν από την εορτή της Μεταμορφώσεως του Σωτήρος και πριν από την εορτή της

Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου. Τον 10ο αιώνα, συνενώθηκαν σε μια νηστεία, που περιλαμβάνει 14 ημέρες και ξεκινά την 1η Αυγούστου.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της συγκεκριμένης νηστείας, νηστεύεται το λάδι εκτός του Σαββάτου και της Κυριακής, ενώ στη γιορτή της

Μεταμόρφωσης του Σωτήρα καταλύεται (επιτρέπεται) το ψάρι. Ανήμερα της εορτής της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου καταλύονται τα

πάντα, εκτός και αν η εορτή πέσει σε Τετάρτη ή Παρασκευή, οπότε καταλύεται μόνο το ψάρι. Τις ημέρες της νηστείας του

Δεκαπενταύγουστου ψάλλονται τις απογευματινές ώρες στις εκκλησίες (εκτός Κυριακής), εναλλάξ, ο «Μικρός και ο Μέγας

Παρακλητικός Κανών εις την Υπεραγίαν Θεοτόκον», οι λεγόμενες «Παρακλήσεις».

Στην Ελλάδα, η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου εορτάζεται με ιδιαίτερη λαμπρότητα, ονομάζεται δε και «Πάσχα του Καλοκαιριού». Σε

πολλά νησιά του Αιγαίου (Τήνος, Πάρος, Πάτμος) στολίζουν και περιφέρουν επιτάφιο προς τιμήν της Παναγίας. Σε πόλεις και χωριά

ανά την επικράτεια, σε εκκλησίες αφιερωμένες στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου διοργανώνονται παραδοσιακά πανηγύρια, που

καταλήγουν σε γενικευμένο γλέντι. Η Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου δεν είναι ένα πένθιμο γεγονός για τον λαό, επειδή η Παναγία «μετέστη

προς την ζωήν». Εξάλλου, τον Δεκαπενταύγουστο γιορτάζουν ο Παναγιώτης, η Μαρία και η Δέσποινα.

Η εορτή της Κοιμήσεως της Θεοτόκου γιορτάζεται με λιγότερο εμφατικό τρόπο στις λοιπές ορθόδοξες και καθολικές χώρες του

κόσμου, στις περισσότερες από τις οποίες ο Δεκαπενταύγουστος είναι επίσημη αργία, όπως και στην Ελλάδα. Οι προτεσταντικές

ομολογίες θεωρούν την Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου δευτερεύουσα εορτή, επειδή δεν βασίζεται σε βιβλικές αναφορές. Η διαφορά αυτή

φαίνεται ανάγλυφα στη Γερμανία, όπου ο Δεκαπενταύγουστος είναι επίσημη αργία μόνο στα καθολικά κρατίδια του Ζάαρλαντ και

της Βαυαρίας.
