RAISE YOUR HOPESFOR A FERTILE CROPBy Dorothea HelmsEven with a compact backyard,you can have a vegetablegarden that’s easy to plant andweed. This year, we decidedwe couldn’t live without freshlettuce, onions, peas, beans andtomatoes, but with our arthriticknees, we didn’t look forwardto the prospect of plantingdirectly into the ground.Instead, we invested in a 4’ x 4’raised garden frame. We hada lot of fun browsing throughgarden centres for seeds andplant material that was alreadystarted. Imagine our surprisewhen we saw sprouts andsubstantial growth in the plantswithin five days! Yes, I likelyover-planted this bed, butforgive my over-enthusiasm. Iwill eliminate some sprouts asthe season progresses.I also LOVE to grow herbs inpots, and my front patio looksfabulous with several containersbillowing forth. I have parsley,sage, rosemary and thyme,as well as basil. I haven’t hadmuch luck with basil the pastcouple years, so I planted threekinds: regular sweet basil,because it owes me; wild magicbasil, because, well, it’s magic;and Aristotle basil, becausephilosophically, this plant should do well. I admit I startedwith parsley plants that were a few inches tall, but I nowhave enough of this herb to fulfill the needs of severalfamilies.We have also been experimenting with flowers in largecontainers, and we find hibiscus bang for the buck. Thisplant’s blooms may last only a day, but as the summergoes on, we get massive numbers of the gorgeous flowers.Growing plants in easy-to-reach pots and a small raisedgarden is a breeze.
